Is it just me or are movies crap nowadays?

OK, I was just thinking about movies and I just figured out that I can't remember when I last saw an amazing film. Is it just or have 99% of movies in the past 2 years just been absolute crap? Am I just getting too old and whiney for my own good? I can't take anymore cashing in on dodgy comic book franchises, or really half-a$$ed comedies.
Prove me wrong people! Tell me the best film you've seen recently and why I'm a complete moron for having not seen it :)

It depends on what type of movies you like? Really, to me, if 99% of the movies you watch nowwa days are crap then to me it seems that movies just might not be your thing. Have you ever thought of that? Movies are for entertainment, vicariously living for the moment, for amusement.
Really, think back to the movies that really moved you. Maybe movies you liked as a kid or something. Or movies that are your favorite, that type of movie, go for that genre and maybe those films are the type that appeal to you. What may move another person may not move you.

There are here and there some good movies.
Lately I watched "Seven pounds" the last Will Smith movie,
It's really making you think of the choices you make in life, and what's more important.
I can not stop thinking about it and question some choices he made in this movie, not him but his character.very, very deep.

I really enjoy watching movies. So much so that I definitely wouldn't make a very good film reviewer because I would always be talking about the good parts of it. Watching movies is a hobby for me almost. I probably watch to many really lol....Anyway, one that I really enjoyed recently on DVD was Kalbluey.

I thought I would never see a musical again (Oliver! is my favorite movie of all time) and then came Sweeny Todd - It is gloriously different from anything else I have ever seen.
(gasp) - you didn't like the Spiderman movies? Or the last Dark Knight? I am shivering waiting for the release of the Watchmen. Not that I like all of them. X-Men was OK for the first one. I didn't bother with the sequels.
And then the animation. I saw the Tales of Despereaux today and loved it. The art and the story are right on the money. Pity those Madagascar movies and Into the Wild were a waste of money - but that's a chance we take.
The third Ice Age movie I'm waiting for DVD - loved the first, suffered through the second.
I didn't bother with the sequels of Jurassic Park - I liked the first one well enough to not ruin it with the sequel experience.
Now if they ever come out with an IMAX version ... I'm on it. I know they have the latest The Day the Earth Stood Still. I will be watching the IMAX version of that, though the story paled from the original. The effects on IMAX should be wonderful.
Oh, yes, I'm still waiting for the last Harry Potter movie (is there one or is it two more?) - already read all the books - several times. I suppose you have to be a fan to appreciate them.
And then the foreign films... Better reviews come from them, though the majority of them seem to be Romance or Drama which are not on my top list - But I had trouble controlling myself with Spain's "The Butterfly" (directed by José Luis Cuerda) - the ending had me BAWLING - and that's pretty strange for a grown man in a public place ....

Oh yea, Pan's Labyrinth is awesome. Can't wait to see del Torro tackle the Hobbit movies!

But Ice Age 2 had some of the best John Leguizamo lines!
"If your species will continue clap your hands!"
"Stop, hey! What's that sound? All the mammoths are in the ground!"
"Sure. She's tons of fun, and you're no fun at all. She completes you."

I'll check out The Butterfly! Thanks. I do miss films like that. Big Fish was probably the last film that had any effect on me in that way.

Absolutely amazing movies, eh? In the past 2 years? And no crappy comedies or comic book movies....
The Eye was pretty spectacular and I had my doubts going in because I have not been impressed thus far with the Asian horror remakes but this one was great. Good story, good acting, no cheap computer animation and no contortionists.
Sweeney Todd was Tim Burton's redemption song after the nightmare that was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Yes, it is a Steven Sondheim musical but seriously, it's a Steven Sondheim musical about a barber who goes batsh!t and starts slashing throats with straight razors. And it has Helena Bonham Carter at her crazy finest. Woman's certifiable but I love her.
Fool's Gold was among the better of the comedies that I have seen in a long time. I completely agree with you about the state of comedies, a state I blame almost entirely on Wil Ferrell and Aaron Seltzer. Fool's Gold harkened back to an earlier time in comedy, the time of films like Caddyshack, Money Pit, Fletch, the Funny Farm...
The Afterdark Horrorfest movies are among the better horror movies I've seen in a long time as well. Probably because they are mostly low-budget, independent movies without studio execs dictating what they can and cannot do. And that gives you 16 to choose from over the last two years.

Sweeney Todd! This is a good point. This was recommended to me by a friend and I totally forgot. Thanks :)

Can't agree about Sweeney Todd, but I do love those Afterdark movies!
Will Ferrell. Can I just say ewww?
Big fan of the Zombie genre. Never met a zombie movie I didn't like.
Good comedies are hard to find these days. I watched Tropic Thunder the other day and couldn't help thinking how much better it would have been without Ben Stiller in it.

Ben Stiller is another actor I think was much more entertaining when he was younger. He started going downhill after the Zoolander series and then plummeted with Mystery Men. But Reality Bites, If Lucy Fell, Flirting With Disaster...those were good movies.

Hehe thanks for your contribution mediamax, but the fact that such films are considered high quality right now is kind of my point :p Maybe I should have been more careful with my choice of words. Action, effects etc. It's good eye candy but it's never going to affect you in any real way, whereas a film like The Shawshank Redemption can. Films don't need to be epic for me to enjoy them, but they need to make me *feel* something, not just look cool. My point is that not so much effort is put into writing amazing plots anymore.

I'm not watching movies because of the effect......
I think Prince Caspian was not just epic or special effect movie, it included very good morals as loyalty, courageous, love...... and many more......this is what i get from this movie...... so i love very much......

Yep, mostly crap. Don't know how many times I checked out a critic's darling and then been utterly disappointed, but it's been most of the time lately.
As for the mention of the upcoming Watchmen movie, I think it's really gonna suck. I read the comic back in the day, and there's no way to get all the key moments of a 12 issue comic series into a 2-3 hour movie. I was all for the HBO mini-series, plenty of time there, but no such luck. The last really good comic to movie adaptation (IMO) was V For Vendetta. Though it differs from the comic some (and Alan Moore hates every adaptation of his work), it truly gets the whole spirit and idea behind the comic.

No it's just you. Movies are great nowadays. ^___^ I am just kidding. I haven't watch a lot of movies lately, cause I am disappointed in them. I think they have used up all the ideas. All the remakes just are really really sucks. The same theme, the same everything. It's not worth watching. I rather just go rent an old classic movie and watch. It's much better, even though I have watch it already.

I agree that most movies are crap, but you don't have to watch them. I don't see the point of watching movies just because they're popular. I hardly ever get to a movie theater any more, so I have plenty of time to read reviews, see how opinions about the movie change over time, etc. I also know that certain directors will almost always produce something I like, even if it's not perfect.
But recommending movies? I don't do that because what you like I might consider crap, and you might consider my choices crap. I also seem to be able to find more interest in films than most people do. Usually, they just want to see their favorite actors in an exciting plot. I find lots of things to enjoy about movies, so even if the plot isn't too great, if the acting is excellent, the special effects exciting, etc., I'll enjoy the movie for what it is.
When it comes down to it, movies are for entertainment, and that's the best way to judge most of them.

Well Yes and no there are a lot of bad movies out there but there also a lot of good movies out there. My favorite movies now of these days are comic book movies which seems like almost every comic book movie since the incredible hulk 03 has been great. Except for musicals which seem to be awful only one ive liked was mamma mia since grease.
