Excuses, escuses...

New Year's Eve is full of excuses. Too many people use it as an excuse to overindulge in drinking, eating, and all sorts of things they wouldn't usually do. For most of us, it's an excuse to make a new start at something, like a diet or a change of routine, etc. I intend to use it as an excuse to start dieting yet again, and to get things done around the house that I've put off. I've also promised my husband I'll try to learn to work less hard -- he calls it coasting -- so I'm not always pushing to meet deadlines. I know others who find energy-reducing ways to get things done, and I truly intend to do this, too. More than anything, I intend to be a better person in every possible way.
What are you using this event as an excuse to do?

For me, I won't find any excuses actually except for a few things such as my failed 2008 resolutions. I rather reorganize myself and plan my life for 2009 than finding excuses to buy or indulge in something. I do that every year. If there is really something which I feel I need to improve on, then I will change and find a solution to those problems. Excuses will not help me to accomplish anything and in my opinion, it's just another way to cheat myself. So stop giving excuses to do something. If you really want to do it and you have plenty of good reasons to do it, then just do it without requiring any excuses.
Wish you a happy year 2009 in advance.

Nobody needs these excuses; they just seem to be a bit of an extra push toward those things we know we should be doing, and we're not doing them as well as we should.

Actually it's more like encouragements than excuses because excuses normally don't work well. You will find another excuse if you failed again and the process goes on and on. You need other types of method to push yourselves further. See yourselves a year from now and imagine yourselves as if you've already done it. Or simply by making a promise to your loved one that you will pay him $1000 if you failed to do this. :P

So true! And I am on your shoes dear. I would wish to stand by my conviction to fight for my cause, to stick to my values and to air my voice against wrongs. I would die the day I lose my belief and conviction.
Great post!

If all of us were to be just a tiny bit better in 2009, this would be one fabulous world!

If we all resolved to commit one tiny "random act of kindness" each day, or if we don't get out every day let's just say whenever possible, the world would be overrun with kindness and the cruelty and meanness would be drowned out!

There is nothing wrong in setting goals at the begining of the year. Even though one might fail at the end of the year. Failures makes us bolder.

Good excuses can also make failure fun, to some extent!

I've always found it ironic that so many of us make New Year's resolutions but then we use New Year's Eve to "get our fill", so to speak, of whatever it is we're going to try to give up in the New Year. They use the excuse that after that night they won't be overeating, smoking, drinking, etc. as if overindulging is going to make something easier to give up the next day!
I'm probably not going to do anything special on New Year's Eve so I won't have a chance to have an excuse to overindulge. I probably will overindulge in pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day but that's very "cleansing"...lol! For the New Year, I'm not going to call them resolutions because they always get broken but I AM going to try to lose weight, to quit smoking (as long as my daughter and son-in-law keeps their end of the bargain and also quit!) and as you said, be a better person in general. I'm also going to try to stop procrastinating all the time and to get more organized. I mentioned in another response here about committing one act of kindness each day and I intend to do my best to do that whenever possible.

I have always made a point of ignoring the fact it's New Year's Eve. I go to bed at night and when I wake up it's just another day. I don't make resolutions, and don't do anything differently. If I REALLY intended to lose weight, spend less time on the computer, etc., I'd do it without any excuse. Therefore, I'm guessing I'm really quite happy being a large, computer-addicted, fat-arsed sloth. And let's face it, if it was good enough for 2008, surely it'll be good enough for at least another 12 months ...

Your attitude is something I admire. I wish I could brush it off, but I still nag myself to get this and that done. The weight is a constant struggle, and so is the computer, but there's always some excuse ...
Happy 2009!

At least, if we can't keep them, we can come up with some very interesting excuses!

New years has never been an excuse to my family to do anything.
We usually celebrate it with a party at our house. That's nothing new. We normally have friends over every friday night for a sociable drink, and a bit of fun... a stress relief in a way.
It's a way to put the last year behind us, and begin fresh with a new year of troubles XD

Routines make me crazy. Maybe it's because I'm a teacher, so I have to do everything when the bells ring. That's why I prefer excuses to promises or resolutions. They just seem easier to ignore!

Yep what you say is the truth but at the same time it is fun to do most of the things you say! I am not making no new starts at anything, mainly because I did this back on my birthday in June so the challenges I have set myself I am currently carrying out. I am hoping to go out though new years eve not to overindulge on drink, food maybe but not drink!

That's why we need excuses. We have to coverfor those things we know we should probably do, but we really don't want to.

Wow! Another excuse for eating chocolate! I'll use any excuse at all, because if I'm going to mess up a diet, chocolate's the best way there is!
Best in 2009.

Hi cobrateacher! I haven't really decided what I will use
New Year's as an excuse for! I will just probably try to make
some promises to be a better person and to change some of the
negative things in my life. I don't like to make too many
promises for fear that I will only break them in the end! I
do try to be the best person that I can be at all times though.
I will be trying to keep to as many promises as I can. I want
to try to keep my apartment neater and keep things in order
so that I don't have to get myself so stressed out trying to
get things done like I have done in the past. As you said,
I will try to be a better person in every way possible and I
do hope that I can stick to that at least! Have a Happy and
Healthy New Year to you and your husband!

All our "promises" to ourselves are doable. Now we just have to do them. Why does it seem so hard?
Best in 2009!

Great idea! It's a shame it's so easy to slip off the intended path. Hang in there, and have a great 2009!
