How far do you push your car when the gas light turns on?

And I don't mean "pushing" it literally, even though some of use had to take that drastic measure. All info sources for my car tell me I can drive up to 40 miles on empty,I've tested that myself and got even better results. But as far as I know,it damages the engine so I try to put gas at most a couple of days later That if I only drove from home to work,if it's a long trip, then ASAP. What about you?

My car doesn't get on empty often. I fill it up once a week, and hardly go anywhere. All I have do to during the week is take my kids to their activities, which is local, and do my shopping on Friday. Then we'll go somewhere as a family on Sunday. I fill my tank Friday before I start my shopping. Usually there's a quarter tank or less. But rarely has it ever been on empty.

Most cars have a few gallons in reserve that lets you hopefully get to a gas station. :) Some friends and I pushed his car even farther one night. "Running on fumes". The car barely creeped forward as we lurched into the gas station! Running with a lower/empty tank doesn't hurt your engine per se to my knowledge, but it does put stress on your fuel pump because it's having to work harder to move the fuel from your tank to your engine.

How much does it take to fill up? The gas prices have gone up but a month ago it'd take me about 20 bucks which was awesome

When I first got the van in May it cost me $100 to fill the tank. While gas was over $4 a gallon I was only putting in $20-40 a week and that would get me close to half tank. That's when it was on empty most often, but I could get from my house to the store 15 minutes away where I fill up without a problem. Now it takes $40 to fill it up, but I usually only put $20-30 now a week, as I really don't drive that much.

i never dare to use the fuel in my car until the light is on because i just don't want to take the risk... so i usually fill it when it is almost empty and not waiting until it is really empty... my hubby tells me that our car can go for another 10 km after the light is on... but i just don't dare to take the risk... in case it stops in the middle of the road, it will cause lots of inconvenience and money to us to have it tow... better to be safe than sorry... take care and have a nice day...

I try not to let mine get below 1/4 of a tank. It is very hard on the feul pump when you let it run very low causing it to work harder plus pull up any yuck in the bottom of the tank. I have an SUV and I was glad to see the prices come down for the past couple of months as it took me about $100.00 to fill it up. But they are slowly creeping back up now. It cost me $65.00 to fill up this past weekend. I keep saying I'm going to get rid of it but I have become atached! LOL

I prefer to fill gas before the gas light comes on. Sometimes it doesn't work out that way though, especially if my husband is driving. He will drive for miles with the light on. It really scares me. I would hate to be on the busy freeway of LA with no gas or in a remote location that no one is around for miles. I was with someone years ago and we ran out of gas. It wasn't a pleasant experience so I learned from it and hopefully it will never happen again.

I doubt that somebody will stop to help on a highway in LA and even then it would be cops which are sort of unwelcome sometimes The worst part about running out of gas is not even the hassle but the embarrassment that comes with it

When my fuel indicator lights up, I will keep driving around 20 to 30 kilometers. After that than I will bother to search for filling station. Actually your fuel tank have some reserve so don't worry to continue your journey when the indicator lights up but don't forget guys after that!

Yeah,or you might end up in a desert with no gas stations around or that desert will happen to be Nevada and you will spend all your money in Las Vegas!

I do not let the gas light come on because I would hate to be in a place where I couldn't find a gas station if I needed it. I honestly have a hard time understanding how people run out of gas. I get it if it is a money issue and you just can't afford to put fuel in the tank and try to get as many miles as you can out of the tank. But, if it is a habit to only put fuel in the tank when the light comes on, I don't understand. I think the car runs better when it has at least 1/2 tank of gas. Plus, I know that I won't be stuck on the side of the road and have to depend on someone else to bring me a small gas can filled with gas so that I can get to the nearest gas station. BTW --I rarely let the gas tank go below 1/4 of a tank. It just makes me way too nervous. I dated a guy who would only put gas in his car if the gas light came on. If the light wasn't on, he didn't feel like he needed to refuel the car. I remember going out and getting in his car one day (borrowing it). When I pulled out of the parking area, I noticed the light was on. I immediately went to the nearest gas station and filled the car up. When I took the car back to him, he questioned why I put gas in the car. He said that the light had just come on and I could have driven between 50 and 60 miles on it. He was actually annoyed and somewhat angry at me for buying gas. He couldn't understand me "wasting" money when I didn't need to. My thought--I didn't want to get stranded. To each his own!

Can't say I put gas very often but I prefer to have at least $10 worth which is not bad considering my car size. The 2 times I ran out were when the gas light didn't work properly so it was showing the car had gas and then-Oops!

Generally,I don't go much more than 20 miles once the low fuel light goes on...although having looked at my car's handbook, then filled the tank as much as I can, then filling a 1 Gallon emergency can,and STILL not getting to the capacity stated,I'm still wondering about how much would be left in the tank with the low fuel light on..

I don't even think of that... They say it depends on where you drive, how old the car is,how much you press on brakes and gas etc so it's hard to know exactly

I do not push it at all. I try to keep gas in it so that they light does not come on. If I'm running low on funds and the gas light comes on I will make my way to the gas station as fast as I can. I do not like to be stranded.

It means you need to fill up ASAP. If you drive it below that for very far, you are risking damage to your fuel pump and that is a costly repair. As a rule, I always keep my tank half full. That way in an emergency I don't have to go get gas. I can also sit in the car to stay warm if the heater goes out in the house, as long as the car is not in a garage. Either way, you are spending the same amount to put gas in your car so at a half or quarter tank at the most, put some gas in it.

That's right, but I don't always carry the money to fill up so would be nice to do that first in case of emergency

I try to always keep my car above 1/8 of a tank, but the one time my light came on I only pushed it a mile. I don't want to ever get stuck because i ran out of gas. I would be so embarrassed because that is something i can control, when its a different story to be stuck due to a tire blowing out or something. Its one of my odd little quirks, lol.

when my gas light turns on, i usually go to the nearest gasoline station and nerver in my dreams to push my car with gas lights already on.

I pretty much know the mileage that I get when I fill my car up, so I usually go by that. I do sometimes push it when I get the fuel warning light, but only to work and back usually (15-20 miles). I did once really push it when I was trying to get 450 miles out of a tank, wasnt too happy accelerating out of corners.
