Do you stop at accidents?

My hubby used to be an emt so he feels compeled to stop and help. Well yesterday we saw a truck rolled over we went to pull over when we saw the cop there and we were gonna leave when our car shook and we heard a crash. Well someone hit the cop car right behind us so close it shook our car. The injured couple from the rollover were in the back. All in all the ice caused a 15 car acciddent. We were very lucky to only have debris hit our car as all 3 kids were with. Three people were injured including the officer. It was a good thing my hubby stopped when he did it was pure ice ahead. They salted and we made the rest of our trip safely. So have you ever stopped to help or do you just assume all is good and move on?

Hello,Minnie! On humanitarian grounds we must stop at accidents and rescue the injured and make necessary arrangements for their treatment. At the same time we must also inform the nearest police station to take appropriate steps to punish the guilty.thanx.

In California there is a woman who is suing the guy that stopped and pulled her from a vechile that was on fire....he saved her life...but she is now a paraplegic so she is suing him for rescuing her.....I don't stop but do call if no one else is around...fortunately I haven't come upon that situation.

Dear friend, Two times I have stopped and saved took the drivers to hospital. But one was in critical stage and his life was saved. The other was not so much critical. But later I had to face those police interrogation and it was bit type of harassment. But lucky one of the police present there was my friend. But later I had to give Rs.1000/- to that police person to get me away from this accident. But I do hesitate to help someone in accidents still at times my humanity makes to do help them as next time I just drop the person to the causality in hospital near by and left to my way.

It depends. If I am the first person to arrive at the scene of an accident, then I will definitely stop and try to help. If there are already people stopped and helping or if emergency vehicles are there, I don't stop. I don't handle blood well, so I am probably not the best help.

Hello minnie, I happy to read that you and your family did not get hurt. I'm sorry that others did. We've seen a couple of people stranded but never stopped to help. I've told my husband that we should have stopped, one never know what kind of help they may need. He is the type to think that something will go wrong if we stop, hearing so many bad things in the news. But if it was up to me I at least ask if they need to used to phone or if I could call the tow truck. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Yeah its sad but you do have to be careful these days. I would not stop if there was just a broke down car i would just call police to help them and keep moving.

I don't blame your husband. There have been scams on the highway where one person will stand and look like they need help because of a car that looks like it is broken down. When a person got out to see if they needed help they took the persons car and along down the road he was shot. That is enough to keep me from stopping and asking if they need help. Almost everyone now adays has cell phones and I do. So I would at the very least call to a police area and tell them about the person I saw that appeared to be stranded. In this day and age it is just to dangerous to stop and offer help.

It's true, you can't even trust a cop, let alone a strange that needs help. I feel sorry for them, and my husband has also told me, you have to be careful who you help. Even if it's a lady. So many things happen now a day.

I don't stop at accidents because it's just too dangerous to do so unless the accident has just happened right in front of me and I can find a safe place to stop my car. Otherwise, I will just take a very short glance and move on in my car. It's just too dangerous to stop and look, and also by stopping, you are actually disrupting the traffic. That is why we have so many traffic jams all across the country. We have too many curious people around. Curious people who are not offering help!

Thats the way i am cause i wouldnt know what to do anyways. My hubby actually is very useful in these situations. He almost didnt stop but when the cop got hit he knew they needed help. The cop was hurt but awake so hubby was able to do stuff to help the cop stay calm.

I have to say it depends on the situation. I will not stop if I am not alone or have my kids with me only cause in this day and age you never know. I have seen an accident and called 911 but drove on. It used to be that you had to stop for an accident if you were the first on scene. Now a days with cell phones and all people don't stop they call it in and go on there merry way. When I think about the accidents I have stopped at there have been very few thank goodness the worst was in the middle of the night and a driver had, had a seizure and crashed into a tree. My brother was with me and we called 911 on his cell phone but stayed with the people that were in the accident to make sure that none of them were injured till the Paramedics arrived. It was very scary for all involved as we were saw it happen right in front of us. I remember sitting and praying with one of the girls that was in the accident praying for the driver. She requested that someone pray with her and I was wanting to keep her calm and praying seemed to be the way to it, but it seems that most people will just drive on with no concern for the people that are in the accident. However please rest assured if I happen to see you in an accident and dont stop no worries I have called 911 and help will be arriving but I am unable to stop cause I am alone or have my children.

Yeah i was mad at first cause we had the kids with. But when the cop got hit i knew we had to stop the car was hit hard. My hubby pulled over way off the road to make sure we were safe and then worked to get the injured to our car as it was very cold outside. The kids never freaked out even with the blood and all. They sat up front and kept to themseves.

It depends on if there is already cops and such on the scene. If not yes we will stop and see if the proper authorities have been notified and if we can help until someone gets there.

No....since I have no expertise I figure I am better getting out of their way. I had to come up to a wedding reception in Maple Grove on Sat. My son drove..it was so icy that we went 45 miles per hour...tons of cars in the ditch! It was scary. Yesterday was better coming home..much better. They do a really good job up there of cleaning the streets. The interstate was another situation altogether...it was still very icy in spots and still cars going in the ditch. I am so glad they didn't hit you!

Glad you and your family weren't hurt. If there are any other cars stopped at an accident I don't stop because I'm not a trained emt and I know a rescue can go bad. I've never been the first at an accident, but I'd stop and call 911 and try to at least keep the injured calm til help could get there.

My husband stops, if it is safe. We went on a long trip on icy roads just before Christmas. There were a few people involved in accidents, and a lot of them had help already on the scene. One we saw rather late, because they had sled into a deep ditch. It looked fairly recent and there was no way to safely stop and get back to the accident without also endangering ourselves (we, too, had three little ones in the car) My husband didn't want to dare to stop on the icy and smaller than usual emergency strip. He didn't want to get down the embankment, too. So he called 911. They already knew about it except that the other caller had said that the driver was slumped over the steering wheel. They were happy to hear that we saw the driver upright and moving as in trying to get unbuckled. My guess is they had to block part of the highway to tend to those people. It's nice to stop and check to see if anybody needs help. If the shoe would be on the other foot, I would hope somebody would be kind enough to do the same. If you can't stop, at least call 911 to have somebody come and check up on the situation.

Yeah we werent gonna stop as the cop was there already but when the cop car was hit we had to do something as we didnt know if the first accident had even been dealt with. I would also hope someone would stop for me as well.

There has only been one time that we came upon an accident and no police had arrived yet. It was on a road up to a mountain ski lodge and I guess they had an ambulance there so it was quicker than coming from town. I had several blankets and was just getting them when the ambulance came. It all happened so fast. I could tell they weren't injured badly. Thank goodness. I was shaking.

I always stop at an accident scene to see whether i can offer help to the victim, like try getting him out of the car if circumstances warrant that, or call 911 for him in case he can't do that, and etc. A bit of help on my part sometimes do make a big difference.

I haven´t stop just to see, that´s what most people do. I hate that because all the traffic becomes a caos. Too slow and etc. I have stopped to help, and actually we all should do the same, if you put yourself in the same situation, you would want someone to help you. So In my opinion we all live to serve, so if you can help, do it, if you can´t then don´t mess around and prouduce a slow work. Hope this help you!

I don't stop to help for the pure reason that I probably can't help. I'm the type of girl that I need someone to help ME so I don't see what help I would be. I think it might be different if I saw it happen right in front of me or if someone looked hurt as I passed... however so far (thank god) the only accidents I have witnessed were either already being cleaned up OR the drivers were out and walking around talking so I knew they weren't hurt. If I thought someone was hurt, I'd most likely pull over soon as I could and call 911. Problem #2 is that I'm not good with directions and streets, especially places I drive all the time, so I might not even know where to tell the cops that I am! Geez, I'm no help at all, am I? But I do recommend more people pull over when they think it is bad out. So many people think they can drive on anything, even after they slip a few times. If it's too icy or snowy, I pull over as soon as I can. I'd rather sit in my car and be late for wherever I was going then try to drive in bad ice. Glad you guys were ok!

I will look at the situation. If there are people helping with the accident I generally don't stop. I would be a hinderance rather than a help. That is because if there is too many people there they would just get in each others way. If not then I would stop to help.

Can't say that I have ever happened upon an accident like that. Glad you all were okay. We are supposed to have some icy weather tomorrow, so I am hoping it isn't bad tomorrow when I go to leave for work. Just glad I don't have to leave first thing in the morning, so hopefully the roads will be taken care of before I leave.

Wow! I'm glad you were all okay. I will stop at an accident if no-one else is already helping. Depending on the situation, I might just stop and call the police on my mobile phone, as sometimes you just don't know if it's dangerous or not.

I have worked in the health care field & am working on a nursin degree right now & i have my cpr/1st aid & all that kinda stuff so when i see an accident i always stop. So far everytime i've stopped they've had adequate help so i wasn't needed but when you're in that kinda field you feel and actually are obligated to stop. I in good faith could never drive past a wreck w/o stopping even if i weren't in the health field.
