Will you sit in your house and freeze or turn on the heat?

Me and my husband have gone nuts. We do not turn on the heat till the temp in the house gets to around 57 and we cant stand it anymore. We have become so obsessed with lowering our monthly energy bill to almost nothing we don't use our heat anymore we would rather freeze or wear a jacket. This is just nuts but we cant stop because are obsessed. Maybe we need help LOL! I just like my energy bill around 40 dollars. Who can beat that?

The lowest reading for my thermostat is 75, any thing less than will be too cold for me. I will rather keep warm than falling sick trying to save some bucks in energy bill, it will end up costing more to visit a doctor than extra saving from electric bill.

our heat is not as high as it could be but we like it like that. we tell our daughters to wear a sweater or snuggle under a blanket if they are watching tv. i dont really see the big deal and lowering the heat is for a good cause, we get to save a bit on money!

I turn up the heat only when it gets extremely cold and than turn it off and bundle up and deal with the cold.

I'm in London and right now it's 6:56pm and it's absolutely freezing outside! I would love to sit here not have the heat on but I just cannot do it! I have one of those tiny fan heaters and they cost the earth in electricity usage! I have been doubling up on the layers but I don't feel very comfortable like this. So, I decided I will use this fan heater for a couple of hours a night; I also turn it on just before I hit the sack! It's not nice having to strip in the freezing cold!! I sure hope this winter weather disappears! Andrew

I usually use a sweatshirt or sweater to keep the chill off. I also wear a toque in the house although that is more to keep my hair from flying around, but I found this year it keeps me warmer. This is the first year I have worn it in the house. I also have layers of light fluffy comforters on my bed that keeps me toasty warm at night. I used to have an electric blanket that kept me really warm. I also wore jogging pants under my jeans that kept my legs warm, it worked sort of like a pair of long johns. 57°F might be a bit obsessive, but if your aim is to save money you will do that. A lot of your energy costs is in central heating. You might want to isolate unused rooms if you have them. I do not think you will get sick as long as you are healthy adults. The only problem might be if you are elderly, really young, or have a medical condition, until then go wild with you obsession. However do not lower it too much or one day you might freeze the pipes.

i am also obsessed to keep my energy bill as low as i can and i and my hubby won't turn on our heater or air conditioner unless if it is really really necessary... we try to bear the cold and hot first until it is really unbearable... especially now with the price of everything rising so high, we become more obsessed in saving every little bit of money that we can... take care and have a nice day...

I can take the cold, just put on more clothes. Its the heat I can't handle. If we didn't have air conditioning I couldn't live in the south. I just pay the bill and moan a lot.

That's pretty cold.I'm always turning mine up and down,it's usually at 69 or 70 degrees for the day and evening around 71 degrees. My house was built energy efficient so my winter bill is never any higher than the 60.00 dollar range. I prefer to stay warm.If it gets too cold wouldn't your furnace run longer to heat up your house though?

I used to live with friends, my first place away from home. Our heat went out one winter, and our emergency heat along with it. We used to sleep in the same bed to stay warm, and ofcourse with lots of comforters. We hadn't ever done that, but I am sure our bill was really low (we had a landlord, our friends stepmom).

Funny question! I would not use the heater as long as I could and live with the freezing temp. But I would rather not push it too much and may switch on the heater for some time. I would do so to control the bill, of course and also not to get used to the header. There could be places where you won't get a heater. Nothing bad in wearing all the sweaters and jackets you have instead of using the heater. Thanks

Good job. I am not that strong lol. I can't stand to be cold. Its not so bad I guess if you have thick socks and a warm blanket to snuggle with. I would rather have my heat though. I think I might try to leave it off though and see how much I would save.

I probly sit in my house and freeze lol. I would wear up to 3 jackets 2 pair of pants a pair of socks and a beanie. I don't really care if its cold in my house, well if my family is cold might as well turn it on. I dont like the bill though.... $100 dollars!! crazy!

I actually don't mind the cold because for me I find it far easier to warm up than to cool down, we have central heating but it plays havoc with my breathing and sinuses and dries my eyes out, so I'd rather have it off, I am more sensitive to the heat than the cold, the only part of me that feels the cold is my hands because they are not covered and you can't type with gloves on! Utility companies know they have the upper hand on people this time of the year and their prices are forever on the increase.

$40 for your bill--are you kidding? You must live in a small house! We don't turn heat on until the temperature drops below 60 and mine was close to $400 last month. I'm not looking forward to the next bill!

baileycows, Experience has taught me how humans can be adaptable and with that added strong will power, it is one very good lethal weapon. I do respect your focused and strong will power here and it does help with the needed conservative movements today. Besides, it will be a much needed added saving to you especially during these challenging times. I am for and in the same class as you. I mean it is just logical besides our forefathers had gone through these times and even much worse, and came out unscathed. So, do you think we could not do it? I don't think so, it is to be a matter of the mind here. Take care and kudos here.

A lot of people have rules like that, although 57 degrees is the lowest I've heard! Energy bills are expensive, especially these days. Fortunately, I live in military housing and currently do not have to pay my utilities. I also live Florida, we don't have to worry about using the heat that much to begin with. But whenever we're even a little uncomfortable, we adjust the thermostat in whichever direction we want to make ourselves comfortable - we're very lucky to be able to do that!

I cannot handle being cold. I will set my thermostat at a lower temperature, but if I am cold, I am cold and the heat gets turned on. I know that using the heat as I do does not save me any money on my bill, but I would rather pay the bill than freeze.

I cant handle the cold and would never sit around shivering to save money. Being cold is one of the most miserable things ever and something no one should have to put with. I would rather cut back on food or luxuries than turn the heating down in this weather
