Emergency. Whats wrong with my computer?

United States
January 18, 2009 2:33pm CST
My computer keeps shutting down without rhyme or reason. And as time progresses, there is less and less time between the length of time it stays up and running. I really don't think its a cooling problem. I tend to think its more of a memory issue. I have a Emachines lap top with a 40gb hard drive And have 756mb of memory. I cannot afford to take it into a shop to have it looked at. There is just no way. I have additional memory at my disposal, but don't know how to tell how much memory it is or how to put it in my computer. Please help.

you are going to have to crash it.. by putting it in safe mode and re-formatting from there. it definitely sounds like you have a virus! it is telling your computer to shut down.

It sounds like it's quiting on you your harddrive may be going. I'd back up any and all files I would be able to before it quits for good. Are you sure you don't have a virus? It will act that way when you have them too. You can and will lose everything. If you can possibly save all things in there and then reformat the computer. That is the way to go. I don't think it's a memory problem . I have a grandson that twice went on game sites and got me viruses. My computer did exactly what you are saying yours is. It finally quit on me. I had to take everything out of the computer and refomat it. Starting from scratch twice since the forth of July. Now my grandson is not allow to touch my computer. I have talked to an IT guy I know that works on computers and he said almost everyone he gets that he has to reformat is because of people going on game sites. I wish you lots of luck with it. Fair warning it will get faster and faster about acting up and then it won't do anything again but freeze up. You can use Casper to clean your computer if you can get the program.

I'm sorry to say but he may have a bunch of nice little trojans for you on there. Youtube and myspace should be okay but the other ones that the kids go to are where they get them from. I myself only go to Shockwave game sight I have never had a problem with them. You can test all games for an hour and sometimes get more time. I pay $4.95 a month for unlimited play on all games. I pay buy the year for that price otherwise it's $9.95 a month. Save what you can and reformat it before you lose your computer altogether.

My son is constantly on game sites, Youtube, Myspace and other sites that I have been afraid would effect my computer. You may have a really, really good point. I do think the best thing for me to do at this point is to reformat. I just hate having to do it.

Another thing, I know you hate to do this but keep the kids off of the computer. You need it they don't need games on the computer. I have bought my granchildren table games, monopoly and such.

Well if its not the hardware that is the problem then maybe is the software that is the problem. It maybe infected by a virus or some malware making a havoc already in your system. If that is the case then maybe it might be time for you to either reformat your HDD and reinstall the whole system back to their normal self. This is the safest to get rid of those viruses. One thing you may search that in the net there are plenty of forums that helps you in solving these kinds of PC problems. But if you are not able to use it I guess it would take you time to really follow their instructions. Then you are needed to have it consulted to an IT person to have it fixed.

If these won't work then maybe it may be the hardware that is the problem like what others are suggesting. Good luck hopefully you can backup your HDD soon.

At this point thats my plan. To reformat that is. I just hope I can keep my system up long enough to back up my files. I know there are many forums and I have looked at a few. Most who had similar problems seemed to think it was a cooling problem, but I honestly don't think its the case this time.

One way to find out if it's your computer over heating. Do you have a small electric fan? If so, set it up so that it will circulate air at your cooling fan where ever it is located. I am assuming that it is under your laptop. There are two fans under mine, so I will clear the cat hair from under it and also use a can of canned air to blow the dust away from the fan unit. Anyhow, aim the fan at the general area of your cooling fan; if it stops shutting down, then it is the problem. I have the problem with my lap top when there is something blocking the cooling fan. With out warning it will simply turn it self off. I check the cooling fan under the unit and it's either plugged up with hair or the air circulation is blocked. I discovered in really hot weather or if I'm working in an area without good ventilation the thing shuts down... so I fire up the fan and everything is fine. You might also use a can of canned air and gently blow it into the fan area. If there is a blockage it will move it away from the fan and possibly help it to work better. Make sure that any papers etc are away from the unit, and also if the fan is under the computer find something to elevate the back of the computer so that there is air circulation under it. I have to thank you, I didn't know that E-Machines made laptops. I knew they made desk tops.

I did put something underneath to make sure it was getting enough circulation. It seemed to help for awhile, but then it seemed to make no difference at all. I haven't tried the canned air thing though. Perhaps I'll have to buy some.

If your system shuts down without any warning or getting the blue screen, its probably hardware. Cooling could be one. i have a friend who experiences that same thing your dealing with. 5 mins after windows logs on and the system just turns off. if you could go to you BIOS (don't do this if you don't know where to find it) you could adjust the settings there to which the system turns off when its over heating. have you tried tweaking your system or overclocking it? i said this coz that's usual problem of people doing overclocking and additional fans are the only answer of just undo the overclock they made.

I can get to my bios but I am afraid of overclocking, because I really don't know what I am doing and am afraid of the results.

so i guess you haven't overclock yet. FYI, i didn't tell you to overclock your system. theres an option there that says, turn off PC when you reach certain temperature. or something like that. you might wanna disable it for a while and see what the result is. but i strongly suggest you turn it back on.

Well, sounds like you could have a Virus or something on there. Do you have a Good Virus protection on your computer installed and run a virus check to see if it catches anything? You might also consider doing a Defrag and removal of programs and such you no longer use. Hopefully it is just something simple like this. If you are using XP you might try rebooting your Computer to like New, and see if this seems to help you as well.

I think if I can get my computer to stay up long enough, I am going to transfer my files to a CD or two and then just reformat. If that helps, it helps and keep your fingers crossed, but if it doesn't, then I guess I have to admit, I've really got a big problem.

Computers don't shut down because of memory. They just freeze. It is more likely to be a virus. 1) Run your anti-virus 2) Run your anti-spyware. If you don't have one of those... download this one. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html I have used it for 8 years. It is the best and it is free. If after all that... you still have the problem... Start saving all your data on DVDs. Because you might have a major problem which requires you to format your Hard Drive. And don't expect any shop to do it for you. Besides that... there are too many things which can go wrong with computers to be sure which one it is. Even the shops don't know half of the time. The process is to check one thing at a time until you find it. And if it is hardware... you don't have the spare cards to test it. Only the shop does. Computers are like everything else... they don't last. If you can run a computer for 4 years without anything burning out... you have done very well for yourself.

I have an Emachine too. I have not had that problem with my deskyop yet. It does sound like it has a booting problem. It may have something to do with the internet connection that you use also.

Dont mind , i think it is a cooling problem.Make me sure, if you listen song in media player while surfing.I advice dont do that.Another tips is, disconnect your all wire like disconnect the wire from cpu to minitor, and cpu to internet connection. Then reconnect again and try.

Do you get any message before the computer shuts down, kbourgerie? I think you should do a virus scan of your complete system to rule that out. Sounds to me like you might have been hi-jacked. Worldstart ran a tip on installing memory several months ago. It is a site that I trust implicitly. I will see if I can find it and PM you.

Thanks. No, I get no warning message at all. It just simply shuts off. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

system getting shut down is a usual problem, as u said it could be of cooling issues.. if ur computer is quiet sometime old it cannot withstand the heat and finally shuts down automatically. or even virus has a role to play in it. there are few virus programs that can shutdown ur computer on a timely basis. just make sure about the software part before checking ur hardware... remove all unwanted softwares and run a virus check or format ur os ... this should help if it is a virus , and its better u get it checked by a professional.. dont forget to hold ur backups...

I am going to try to run a virus check. I just hope my computer stays up long enough for me to be able to do that. It shuts down every 15 to 20 minutes.

The laptop may actually have a cooling problem as there is less cooling in most laptop designs. Combine this with heavy resource use (higher end programs) and overheating can occur. There could also be an issue with the power supply and you should check the cords if you can. If its an internal problem (like the motherboard/internal power then it'll be too big of a problem to handle by yourself). It could also be an age issue. If you have additional memory I'd save it for the next computer. If you do try the memory however you have to be sure its the right memory type as some memory slots are different. There are cases where you buy a top of the line memory module and you can install it into a lesser harddrive, but the system will only use the memory to its own specification limits (i.e. DDR-1066 memory on a DDR-667 max motherboard will only run it to the 667 speed). In order to install the memory, you have to look for your laptop manual to see the installation area. Typical memory areas for laptops is usually under the keyboard or on a slender area at the bottom of laptop.

Most likely a driver was incorrectly installed or has been corrupted. You should try to reinstall windows by inserting the CD ROM into the computer, rebooting, and attempt to boot the CD while still in POST(1st start up screen, i.e, says press F12, etc). Make sure you boot the CD by selecting the CD drive in the boot menu or changing the boot sequence in the BIOS settings

It could be a matter with the electric power supply. Maybe there is too few electric current in your outlet or the contacts are corroded or there are fluctuations in your supply. Maybe it is a nisconfigured BIOS. Sometimes it helps to disable some shadow cache. Or it could be a resistent invisible virus ...

Hope your computer is using old configuration, you can upgrade your PC by contacting a hardware vendor. I am having same problem when I have used DELL P3 machine with 512 MB RAM. Now I have bought new PC. But still I am using my old PC to do some software development in VB6. Check your hardware configuration or you might be installed any new software which require Higher hardware configuration.
