Better the devil you know than…..!

A bird has told me that our boss is set to retire at the end of this year. I cannot say that he was my “ideal” head. He had his strengths and weaknesses as any other human. But we did not look eye to eye on most things. Anyway I feel always anxious to know that I will have a new head. A change might be for good but who knows. Do you agree that it is the better the devil you know than having someone new whom you have to adjust to his or her new exigencies? (c) ronaldinu 2009 - the more people I meet-the more I love my dog

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. It really depends on the situation. Sometimes change is good, or so I'm told. LOL!! Me I roll with the punches I might not like change but sometimes it is for the better honest. Just don't get preconcieved notions and give the new boss a little slack and see what happens only time will tell.. Good luck and I love the end quote.

Haha, I say that all of the time.... better to deal with the devil you know than the devil you don't, but think positively. Imagine the ideal headmaster and keep that in your head. Do not let it go. The power of positive thinking is quite powerful. The other thing is, once you get the new head, just roll with the punches. Not to say not to stand up for what you think is right but there is a time to put energy into other things as we will never win all the battles, but we can win the war. Geez, I sound like a walking quote!

I think that with diplomacy you can win the war even if you might lose a battle. Unfortunately diplomacy was never my forte but I am trying to learn how to...

I think the devil you know is definitely safer - at least you know where you stand with your current boss, and having to 'train' another one will be a pain. We have neighbours on one side who are a bit of a nuisance - they knock on the door and waffle on for hours about nothing, and park their horrible caravan on their front lawn which blocks out the view of the gardens up the street ... but apart from that there's no problem, and it worries me they'll sell up and leave, and we might end up with a family of six children and five large, barking dogs! We're used to the peace and quiet in our street, and I'd much rather keep the devil we know!

I guess that you would not like to be my neighbour than hehehe. I always had good relationship with my neighbours. I always made sure that my dogs were not being a nuisance to my neighbours by barking. i tried to keep cleanliness and not allowing them to bark for stupid reasons. I only got a warning by the police once during the ten years that I spent living in another area. Now that I have a bigger place I hope taht my dogs wont be a nusicance to anybody.

I'm sure your dogs wouldn't be a nuisance, Ronaldinu! I love dogs - but we have some people in our neighbourhood who have several of them and then are not at home all day to look after them. The dogs go wild - and the owners probably don't even know it's happening. I'm sure you'd be a lovely neighbour!

Hey ronaldinu! Well sometimes it is better to have the person who you have already come to know and have gotten used to even if you are not really happy with them. There is always that possibility that the next person could be worse! But, the they could also be better! I do know how you feel though! I tend to dread the unknown sometimes to!

Changes can be for better or for worse, the only thing that's for sure is that changes are inevidable. If you are facing a change with your boss and your last boss wasn't exactly what you hoped for, the odds are big that you will like your new boss better. Getting new people into the company can make everyone more alert again and bring new fresh ideas. Good luck!

I'd rather see if I could have a better relationship with the new person than have to endure the one I don't have a good relationship with and have troubles from. Many times change is good. Or it's what you make of it.

I prefer to retain the boss that I have...I am familiar with all their nuances & idiosynchrasies....therefore can work around all situations, knowing the constraints, personality & limitations! Changes are often good...but your closing line says it all! Better the "devil I know, than the one I don't"! Cheers!

I can agree with you on that one, it is better the devil you than the one you don't know...in my experiences I had a job in supermarket anfd the Manageress was a lot to be desired you either got on with her or you didn't..I happened too but then she was moved to another branch and the Manager who took over was awful everything had to be done by the book loads of food was wasted rather than reducing it a couple of days before it was out of date, prices of food went up and he was really hard to get on with and people started leaving whom had been there ages so I always have said its better the devil you know to the one you don't...littleowl

I would just assume that the new head would be an improvement. Then my attitude would be welcoming and I'd get off on the right foot with the new guy. Change is often for the better!

Hi. ronaldinu. I know that I would love to have a new boss any day now, if my old boss has given me h***! But sometimes, the new boss can be just as worse. All that you can do is hope for the best that your new boss will not give you a terrible headache like the old boss has.

I'm always so careful when wishing or asking for something new because I know that most times I always end up with someone or something that is worse than who or what I had to begin with. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. That is one lesson I've learned in life. I do hope the new boss you get turns out to be better for you and is a little easier to get along with. The more people I meet the more I love my cat :) Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

A new change will always be good, but i will prefer the devil i know than having to re-adjust everything again.. lol =D After all, it has more or less become a habit, knowing what our bosses wants and expect.. But with a new boss, everything is gonna change, and hard times is always expected during the initial stages.. If one can survive thru that, very soon, new boss will become the same old devil that u know.. lol =D

That is a sort of tough question. In my opinion, if you didn't get along with you're boss, maybe the change will be better for you. It will give you a chance to reintroduce yourself and ensure that he sees you're best work first as well as your best ideas. It will give yor new head a positive outlook on you as an employee and it may establish a new "work relationship" which is very beneficial. As for having the same head, it almost seems hopeless for a better work relationship.
