So, what would you have done?

Well I just nipped out to take my sons to Boys Brigade and when I got back there was a message on my answering service from someone saying that she needed to make an appointment and could I call back. So I did call her, just to tell her that she had got the wrong number. I didn't want to have it on my conscience that this poor person wasn't going to get a phone call from someone to make her the appointment. She was in the shower at the time but her husband seemed grateful that I had called just to let them know, I know I would have been.
So, what would you have done? Would you have called the person to let them know or leave it for them to sort out?

I think you did right.I get so aggravated when I call someone and am waiting for the call back and after a few days I call back and then just casually say,"Oh, you have the wrong number." or "This is her mother and she does not live here anymore,I'll give you her new number." Then I call her at the correct number and she says that because I didn't call her back sooner she gave the job, apartment, whatever to someone else.
I think it is common curtosy to call someone back and tell them that they have the wrong number.Even when someone doesn't leave a message and their number is on my caller ID I will call them back and ask why they called and most of the time they are looking for someone that used to have my phone number.

I think you definitely did the right thing. I've done that a few times myself when time and again the same person leaves a message on my answering machine and I have no clue as to who this person is. Kudos to you!!

I would probably have acted like you did. But I donĀ“t have an answering machine so for me would be difficult to discover her number. But if I had I would act the same. Cause her appointment should be important and I act with people like I would like people to act with me.

hi devonshire lady, you are a wonderful person. That's nice of you to be so considerate of others and going a bit out of your way to help others. It did not cost you more than a call to help another person but you have done it. I am sure that the concerned lady appreciated your gesture. I think I would have done the same if this thing happened to me. A few months a foreigner left a message on my answering machine wanting to contact a friend. I did not have the telephone number of the person concerned and thus I was unable to contact anybody.

Yes I would have done the same as well. There is nothing worse than sitting around waiting for someone to call back after leaving a message on their voicemails!
I bet the woman was very pleased that you returned her call

Hi there mummyofthree
I get impatient and tend to call back after a couple of hours if I had not heard back already I would call again having left a voicemail message or no!! If it is a doctors and they would have been during surgery hours I wouldn't even bother leaving a message and continue to call until I spoke to a person!
Thanks for your response

Hi Humbug, Yes I would have called the number too, I have done in the past and also if I have received a text from someone I have texted to say they have texted the wrong number to let them know as the appointment and message ould be very important and they would probably be unaware otherwise. Well done you. Huggles. Ellie :D

I have done the same thing when I was working. I worked for a hospice company, and one day I returned from lunch and checked my messages, to find that there was a call from patient's relative. We did not house patients, we were the corporate office. I called the person back to let them know that she had contacted the corporate office and that she would have to contact the facility her relative was in. She was very grateful for the call back.

You deserve a pat on the back! I recently had a phone message that I knew wasn't mine, but since it was just general chit chat, I ignored it. I would hope that if I got a message like you did that I would try to call back to tell them they had the wrong number. There should be more people in the world like you! Best wishes!

Hi there bmorehouse1
I have left a message on someone elses ansering machine before and a few days later asked my friend if she got my message and when she said no, I realised that I had left it on someone elses answering service and was just glad that I hadn't said anything rude! LOL
Thanks for your response

I would have done exactly as you had done. It would have bothered me to think that someone out there was waiting around for a call that they were never going to get. I know that I would be greatful to someone that had gone out of there way to do so.
I am glad to see that there are still people like us out there.

I'm glad there are people like you out there I know there are plenty of people out there wouldn't do and they don't realize that it could mess up someones whole day if they don't let them know the number they called was the wrong one. It has happened to me. Someone from the court house called me or so they thought it was and informed the answering machine at that number that my jury duty would start a day early. Instead of calling the courthouse and informing them they had called the wrong number in which an officer would have came by and told me. They ignored it and I almost got arrested for not showing up for jury duty. The court clerk said I left you a message on your machine. That is how I know someone did get the message just not me. Luckily the Judge was kind enough and only made me buy the coffee for the fellow jurors the week we were in court. Better than jail time or huge fine.

Hello humbug25! Well, what you did is right. If you haven't told her, she might miss the important things in her life. If I were in your place, I would do the same too. You're such a nice person girl.

Well, When that happens to me I always call back. The only ones I don't call back are the telemarketers and the automated voice that are usually telemarketers. Also, you have to watch when they say call them back about appointments or information then to find out it is a trick to get you to call the number which transfer you to a 900 number and you don't know it until you get your bill. So, watch out for those. But, yes that was nice of you and I would do the same thing...

It depends on the situation if it seemed like something urgent or important I would probably call to let the person know. if didn't than I will let it for them to work it out.
It was a Nice thing from you to do.
