Woo-Hoo!!! I finally found out this morning that my disability claim has been approved and my monthly benefits will begin in March and I have a nice chunk of back-pay coming "any time". I never thought this day would come! I was told several weeks ago that Jan. 28 was the deadline for my case to be determined and as it got closer I got more nervous and more scared so when the phone rang this morning I about had a heart attack. It's been a long struggle and a long time being stuck between a rock and a hard place, knowing I needed to have medical documentation to win my case but not being able to afford the copays. I feel like the largest weight anyone could imagine has been lifted off my shoulders!
Getting approved may not make my back and joint problems go away but I think it will help my depression/anxiety and my high blood pressure!

Annie,
I am so happy for you. I know what you are going through if you can see what I am saying.
Annie, please go pamper yourself for one day, alone or with your hubbie, and enjoy. You so deserve it.
Massive hugs from NYC. ***happy dance***

Thank you, Ainge, I really appreciate it. My daughter and I are going to have a spa day when I get my first check. She's gone through a lot too so we're going to do it together. Then the family is going to go have a ice dinner somewhere for a change.

OOPS!! My worn out keyboard got me again...lol! A NICE dinner is what I meant to write. No "ice" for me (unless it's in a glass!); I like it HOT! My hubby and I will hopefully also take some quality time alone together but we've kind of not had much of an opportunity to do things with the whole family lately because of the lack of money so we're going to spend some time on the grandkids as well.

An ice dinner may be a bit cold...hehe. I am glad and I was going to say the spa but I thought maybe you and hubby would go together. Spending the day with your daughter is great too. Have fun.

Hooray!!! I'm really glad for you. I have thought about trying for disability, but I can't leave the job for about another four years. That's when I can retire, and a lot of huge health problems will improve. I can't imagine how you've been getting by, and it's wonderful that you'll finally have some help!

anniepa, congrats and one more thing, that money from disability check is not gonna cure your back and joint problems.
If you could, please try to join some YOGA class, that really helps a lot . Don't depend too much on medicines.. just give it a try, , slow, nice and steady.
bbest of luck.

Thanks for the advice, I might give Yoga a try. I'm definitely going to be going to the pool a lot. I don't like taking too much medicine either. The over the counter painkillers don't help me much anymore and my doctor doesn't like to give me the prescription pain pills unless it's really, REALLY bad. Even the prescription pain pills don't really help me much anyway.

OTC painkillers are just temporary, numbs brain cells,.. slows bloodflows.. not good at all..
best of luck to your initiatives to do YOGA. Goodluck and my god take all your back pains and stuff like that.. with the help of YOGA

anniepa,
Congratualtions!. I know how you felt. I had to fight for it years ago when my hubby was still working. A couple of years ago he had to go on disability and he just couldn't believe that it was taking as long as mine had taken. He thought that it should have been easier by the time that he applied for it. All I could do was help him through it and just keep telling him that he had to be patient. He finally got it last Nov. and he had never been happier. We were able to get caught up some of the bills and we had a nice Christmas.
Having the lump sum come in increments is a pain, but you know that it's somethng in the pipeline for later. Again, CONGRATULATIONS!

anniepa,
They take it back from the very first day that you applied. The also factor in all the increases that happened while your case was still being decided. I hope this helps you in figuring out a ballpark figure that you could get back.

Thank you! You're so right, to have the time and the money to take care of your health is important. I was between a rock and a hard place all this time; I needed to go to doctors a lot to prove my disability so I could get money but I couldn't afford to go to the doctor! I have insurance but the copays still killed me.

Congrats, Annie. I know those things are hard to take but a large majority of the people who stick it through seem to win in the end. I think the system just hopes they can make the applicant so miserable with the process that they will give up whether or not they are entitled. Glad to hear you stuck it out and won.

Congratulations Annie!!! I know how good it feels to win. I too am on SSD. I remember years ago when I FINALLY got my approval letter I cried and cried from happiness. I had gone broke fighting for over three years to win my case. I carried that letter around for weeks afterwards, reading it several times. Its also really nice when you get that back pay. :)

Thanks goodness annie. I have been worring about it for you. I am glad they finally worked it out. It really should not have taken this long but I am glad it finally did work out for you. As you said...it may not fix your medical problems but it will relieve a lot of stress off you with trying to make ends meet. It may make your health better too now that you can actually afford to go to the doctor.

Thanks so much, Hon! You're right, I'll be able to go to the chiropractor again, which does help my pain but my insurance doesn't cover it so I haven't gone for ages, plus I can go to the pool. Swimming and water exercises really does help keep me loosened up plus it seems to help me sleep better, too. I'm like a fish in the water!

They sure do put us through it! I would never begrudge anyone who is truly in need of disability to get it but it was so frustrating when I'd see someone getting it who had never worked a day in their lives and I'd worked nearly 40 years and they made me wait forever. I just don't know exactly what their deciding factors are.

I am so happy for you Annie! Its good to hear some happy news once in a while. I dont know if you have heard. They dont give the retroactive money in a lump sum anymore. THey now split it up with a paymen every six months. I guess they figure people wont piss through it so fast. I am glad you can finally relax. No worries. good luck. dl

Hey annie! Congratulations! That is great! I am so happy for
you! I do know exactly what you are talking about because I
am in the process myself! I have just started and it is
definitely wholey hell! I have an appointment tomorrow morning
that was made for me by the State Disability Board to see
a bone doctor! Then next week they are sending me to a
Psychiatrist! It is very nerve wracking to say the least!
I am in pain and anxious and have high blood pressure too and
this stuff doesn't help one bit! It isn't like the money will
pay for everything I need and then I still don't know how
I will manage. I just hope that I won't have to deal with this
particular stress much longer. I know that the decision will
be made in the next few weeks or so. I am also on edge waiting.
If I don't get it then the first appeal will be made and then
more waiting. I am being represented by some firm that helps
people with Temporary Assistance like I have now so they are
handling most of the paperwork and are doing this for free.
I am so happy for you as I do know how relieved you must be!

Congrats! The Social Security System can be such a pain to deal with. I'm currently waiting to hear back if my son has been approved. I so hope I don't have to get a lawyer! How long did it take you to get approved and did you have to seek legal counsel?

My case is kind of screwed up - like I am...lol! I originally applied back in 2006 and was turned down. There was then a mix up in my paperwork when I appealed and requested a hearing. I reapplied this past August and it took until Jan. 28 to get my decision. I didn't get a lawyer but I was all set to get one if I'd have been denied again. There are lots of attorneys and firms who don't charge you anything unless you win your case and they can only get 25% by law with a maximum of $5500. I'd also advise you to contact your U.S. Representative.
