So I am from Sweden and having a mac is very rare. They are expensive and do not serve the needs of the many. I recently moved to US and almost everyone here got a mac. I don't get it. Just to read emails, you don't need a $1500 computer.
So why did you get a mac?

Why did I get a mac? Because I didn't want my investment to become obsolete in three to five years. I wanted a reliable operating system that didn't crash on me once a week for trying to print a paper. I wanted durability and sustainability. All of these things I got with my macbook, and my ibook for the last four years. I had a PC for my very first computer and within six months I had to upgrade the entire system in order to stop it from crashing, which only succeeded in preventing it from crashing everyday. My roommate has gone through two PC laptops in the last five years, the only reason he had to go out and buy a new one last year was because he couldn't get anymore upgrades for his last one. Any new software or hardware he could get wouldn't work properly and it ran slowly, having only had it for two years prior. That's why I bought a mac.

I'd say macs get just as obsolete as PCs within two years. My fiance is on her third mac now in our relationship (weve been dating for about five years).
But for stability and reliance I understand what you mean completely, although most problems in PC is due to windows while you can run so many different OSs on a PC nowadays (even mac thanks to the intel processor)

I guess it just matters what youre using it for.
My fiance is a digital artist so she has to upgrade her computer every now and then, since graphics are becoming more and more advanced.
I don't really understand the statement people make about how you *have* to replace your pc. I've had my Lenovo thinkpad for about 3-4 years now and its still runs like a charm. Cleaned out windows pretty much right away :) And sure it's not up to date with todays market. But as you said, I got what I paid for: a really, really good laptop. Only upgrade I've made is the ram, but that's it.
The problem with people using Windows I guess is that they don't take care of it. The luxury with a Unix system is that it takes care of itself hence the longevity.

I noticed that I did not see many apple products when I went to visit my boyfriend for a month last month in Stockholm, Sweden, though when I got home most people have at least one apple product haha. I do not have a mac, I prefer PC, but my brothers want to get together and get me one for when I start college this fall. "but everyone has a mac, 85% of college students." That is what one of them told me when I suggested a PC. I just need something for the internet and word processing, other than that the logo really does not mean anything to me.

Haha exactly.
I understand people who get mac for performance and stability doing digital art, motion picture and music. My fiances family are mac freaks, for no good reason. I try to convert them and tell them why theyre just wasting money but to no avail :( Her sister got a macbook for alot of money just do text work. Her mom the imac just for emails. Her brother because he gets too many viruses (but thats because he dont know about antivirus :P)

haha yeah, it is really out of control some people and their mac craze. My one brother has a mac desktop, an iphone, and an iPod... and then my other brother has an iphone, and an ipod, he then goes on to call the other brother a mac-f a g when he has just one mac product less. Man I remember before the iPod came out mac was going bankrupt, now they are making the most money haha.

Mac or rather Apple products are pretty expensive in my opinion. But they're very slick in terms of design and they focus particularly on user experience. From what I know (I've been thinking of getting MacBook), the functions used by Apple in MacBook are very useful and a lot of people are using them. On the other hand, if you notice, most built-in software given by Dell and HP, etc, are not very useful. To me, those software are actually slowing the overall PC/laptop down.
Also, the current Windows Vista is very problematic and most people are forced to use it with the new laptops since the XP has been discontinued. Few of my friends actually opted for Mac because of this since Mac OS X Leopard is many times better than Vista in terms of performance, usability and user friendliness.
But I must say, Macs ARE expensive and might not be that good a value for money. After all, with the same price, you can easily get a 16-inch gaming or desktop replacement laptop as compared to a normal 13-inch MacBook.
