What matters: Speedy typing with two fingers or Slow typing with 10 fingers?

I generally use only two fingers (the forefingers of both my hands) to type on my key board. Now a days, I have been trying learning typing using both my hands (all fingers). But what I found is, I could type with a speed of around 40 words per minute using the two fingers while that using all my fingers is just 15wpm. What do you think I should go for? The only advantage for using all fingers is that I don't need to see the key board while typing!

LoL ~ Is that a oxymoron statement. Shouldn't that be the other way around? Slow typing with two fingers and speedy typing with 10 fingers? There is free online typing sites that will teach you how to use your home keys and especially use all of your fingers in the correct and right manner that way you won't have to even look at the keyboard, rather at the screen, like I'm doing now. I haven't looked at my keyboard this whole discussion response. On average, I type about 40-45 wpms. If I only used two fingers, it would probably be 1/8 of that speed. Not seeing the keyboard is more economically correct in your posture while you're typing as well. So when you hunched over the keyboard searching for the right key to push, you're only cause a problem for yourself unknowingly. That poor posture and incorrectly used typing manner, may not seem like it isn't bothering you now, but be fore warned about the dangers, you're allowing your self to be in. The primary thing you need is practice and soon you're be typing much faster using all of your fingers, than just 2 of them. The other thing that you will come to learn, is the accurate typing is more IMPORTANT than speed typing any day.

I think you should do whatever you feel comfortable with. I used to do the two finger thing, too. I have found that over time I have become quite accustomed to typing the "correct" way. I can now type almost 85 wpm, which I think is pretty cool. You should do what makes you happy, though. That is what really matters!

I used to be a two finger typist, then I got started in school and the typing classes insisted that I use all my fingers. My max speed was 30 wpm. I did about 40 with two fingers. Then a few months ago I took a typing test and was shocked...I was typing 80 wpm with all my fingers. Whoa! I was sooo surprised. I think what helped my speed was to keep practicing and posting on myLot. Of course it also is the fact that I needed the speed to do all the college papers. Now I can't remember doing all the two finger typing...and now don't have to watch my fingers on the keyboard and am able to find the back space key and other important keys without taking my eyes off either the screen or copy I am typing. It's all a matter of practice. My other problem with speed was the fact that I learned to type on a typewriter rather than a keyboard. Hitting the keys on a typewriter hurt so badly which would reduce my speed enormously. Now with computer keyboards it is so much easier for me to type and maintain speed.

Touch typing is the way to go. Sure you are faster with just 2 fingrs now, but you were not always that fast.... when you began two finger typing it was hunt and peck and soooo sloooowww. That's the way it is when you start training your hands and mind to become a touch typist, and if you let yourself fall back to the easier way, you will just take that much longer!

Ya, but it took around 4-5 yrs for me to attain this speed with 2 fingers.. And I dont want to give this much time with my 10 fingers!!

With 4 years experience behind you you can expect to be typing nearly as quickly in a month and much faster in two months...but only if you resist the temptation to fall back into 2 finger mode!

if you type with only two fingers , whether it is slow or fast; after some time your fingers/ hand will tired. so make a habit to type with all the 10 fingers. after some time you will find that you will get a better speed then 2 fingers.

Nice point. Using 10 finger will distribute the work into 10 parts while in case of 2 fingers, more workload on all. Thanks for posting.

I dont use my left thumb :P But 10 fingers and speed it up, it will do you well. Especially when typing longer messages/emails/code O_O I typed this whole message with two fingers, it is really really hard :(

I think It all depends on what we are used to.. Like U feel typing with 2 fingers is tough, which seems very fast for me..

Probably :) But I think either way 10 vs 2 at same speed the first one wins, I mean you have 8 more fingers. But yes, it doesn't really matter. Whatever feels right and comfortable for you :)

Yes, absolutely! We should get with one we are more comfortable with. The only advantage of traditional 10 finger typing style is that we don't need to see the key board.. Just think of the word, move your fingers and you get it on the screen!

i'm all for typing with all my fingers. you might not be able to type fast now since you've just started. with practice, i'm sure you can reach 40 words per minute. in all likelihood, you'll surpass that and type faster than you ever have. i learnt typing with all my fingers and i can type pretty fast. the fastest i've ever typed was around 70 words per minute. i'm sure you can do better with practice. cheers

Hey amitksing! I think that it would be a good idea for you to learn the keyboard because as you said you wouldn't need to look at the keys and in the end that would eventually increase your typing speed. But, I have honestly seen so many people that can type very quickly with two fingers! In fact I have a doctor who types with two fingers! You would think that he would have wanted to learn the keyboard being all the papers he would have had to have typed going through medical school!

I guess slowtyping with 10 fingers is still better. You'll get used to it in time but quick typing with 10 fingers is very aweful to look up and the keyboard is not design that way. So I guess we should use the keyboard the way it is made or the purpose will be defeated. There are effects of too much hand stress as well, so writing with 10 fingers can prevent the other fingers get too strained. I am guily of not using the 10 fingers but I use at least 8 fingers.

That is amazing... 40 wpm with two fingers. I think you should stick with learning the correct method, I can only imagine how fast you will be when you get all ten fingers flying. You will be fast as lightening.

Hi amitksing, it is the ultimate output that matters much, not the method of achieving it. The statement is true in most of the cases. So fast typing is the most important thing. So using two fingers or ten matters less. However, if you want to learn typing like a pro, you have to compromise your speed at first, later with practice the speed will increase while using ten fingers of both the hands. Good luck

I think what you are arguing is the same Dilemma almost everyone who learns to touch type (that's what typing with both hands called) late. at one hand typing with both your hands and not having to look to the keyboards seems like the right thing to do, but it takes too long . and they easy and faster way to type. I can tell you from experience is as you practice touch type you go faster, with time. in face by time you are faster then you'd ever be using 2 fingers. just suffer for couple of weeks then enjoy the benefits for a long time :) Happy Mylotting

You might be typing 20wpm with two fingers, but once you get a hang of typing with all fingers, you can get up to 50wpm. I currently type 109wpm. :)

I think that learning a new way of doing something is never easy the first or second time around. If you can get by with using two fingers, then you're fine. If you want to master the real of typing that will ultimately lead to more efficiency, speed, and accuracy, then you should practice using 10 fingers. Take a typing class for a two months and you will be typing faster than ever in no time!

You get faster the more you practice. I know when I first started to type I was very slow. Then as time wore on I got faster and faster till now I am just over 75 words a min. I can really haul some butt. I love that I can quickly spew out what I want to say and move on to the next discussion.

I do the two finger thing too...but i can type the asdf...way too. Its easier with all fingers bc you dont have to look at the key board, but once you learn the 10 finger way, even with two fingers you wont have to look down much. Thats what I do. you learn the placement of the letters and then you dont have to look down. Its faster though, the two finger way. Good luck.. I hope you will get to 50wpm on the ten finger way asap.

I use 10 fingers to type. It make me to type very fast. If you use 2 fingers you have to see monitor and keyboard. Firstly i faced lot of problem while typing with all fingers but day by day i like to type with all fingers. now i cannot type with two fingers. learner will tempt to type with only two fingers but it is not advisable to type. If you practice daily you can type easily 40 wpm.

it took me forever to try and learn to type with all fingers and NOT look at the keyboard but the more I practice the longer I can spend typing and not correcting my spelling and also I can focus on what I'm typing on the screen. Just keep practicing with all your fingers in the correct position and the more you type the better. it looks a lot better to someone when they see you use all fingers rather than just one or two. Especially in a job interview or when you're at work. keep it up! YOU CAN DO IT!

Many studies show that typing with all 10 fingers actually lessens the chance of having osteoporosis! So type with 10 fingers instead of 2.
