If you saw an animal locked in a hot vehicle, what would you do?

If you were passing by a car on the street or parking lot on a very hot summer day and saw a poor dog inside a hot vehicle with the window cracked slightly- what would you do? Would you try to find the owner, would you try to get the animal out of the car, would you try to pry out the window more or would you contact animal control or the police. I would probably check to make sure the animal is okay, look around for the owner and contact the police.

I would start kicking the car. This has never happened with me but thats what came to my mind when I read this discussion. I would indeed start kicking the car. This is the fastest way to get the poor little guy outta there. I guess the autocop or some alarm facility will get the owner there very fast...
Its not about complaining to the police or the animal control. People have pets because they love animals. Such a thing may happen with anyone. The main thing is that you have to ensure the safety of the animal...
Take care buddy...

You know what, you got my vote too! This is a great idea! If the car doesn't have an alarm, nine times out of ten this will get back to the owner and they will get the dog themselves.

That would be "call" the police. Ooops. I got a phone call while typing and didn't notice my typo.

This has actually happened to me. I was sitting at home, when my neighbor knocked on my door. I answer and he tells me to come and look at this dog in the car in the backyard; he had just seen it as he was taking his garbage to the dumpster, windows rolled completely up and it was 90 outside. I come out of the house and building to see, and there is the dog. It was a large pit bull in a mid-sized car. It was parked in the shade, but it was still hot and with no ventilation there was no telling how hot it was inside.
My neighbor was worried for the dog, and wanted to call the police, which was another reason he came to get me, since I had a phone. Knowing that the building was known for having frequent traffic, I told him that I had to take my garbage out anyway. I would return to my apartment, get my garbage together and grab the cordless phone. If the car was still out there by the time I got back out here, I would call the police.
He agreed, and by the time I did come out the car was gone. I thought of calling anyway and giving the plate number, just in case this fool decided to do this again elsewhere, but instead said a little prayer, because I didn't know what direction the person went except out, and went back in the house.

I would definitely call the police if the owner didn't show up in a couple of minutes. It doesn't take long at all for the temperature inside the car to reach a point where it can become deadly to animals. I would actually be prepared to break the window of the car at the first sign on distress to the animal. Even if I got arrested for doing it, it is better to go to jail than to let the animal die like that.

i will definitely take down the licence plate number of the vehicle and call an animal rescue organisation here (RSPCA)... i can't stand people doing cruel things to animals and people who are so irresponsible as to leave their animal just like that inside the car don't deserve to own an animal... take care and have a nice day...

This actually happened to me last summer. There were two dogs locked in a truck in August. There was no food or water and I couldn't stand it. It broke my heart. I called my animal lover friend and asked her what I should do and she said call the police. I did that and the police came and their attitude was "Well, they're better off there than running iin the streets." I'm thinking, no...in the street they can breathe and they could probably find water. So that annoyed me, especially since my state had just changed animal cruelty laws and it should have been taken more seriously by the police. I called my friend back and we started working together. We called everybody we could think of. PETA, the ASPCA, even the local news station. The news people said it wasn't a good story, the ASPCA didn't offer any help, but thankfully, PETA did. I never did care for PETA much...I always kinda considered them a little too radical. But they really got to work and got those dogs out of that hot truck. It took me almost getting into a fist fight with the owner of the dogs and lurking around his truck for about 3 days, but at least something got done. It was sad though because when the dogs were finally removed it was pretty apparent one was either very sick or had some brain damage from the heat. I hope they finally found a good home and someone that wouldn't lock them up in a hot automobile.

There is nothing more upsetting to me than to see a pup in a vehicle when it is too hot or too cold for them. I guess I would try to find the owner if it was in an area that was small enought to know where the owner would most likely be. If it was impossible to determine where the owner could be I would call the police...that is just animal cruelty as far as I am concerned.

I never understood why people think they have to take dogs in the car when they have to do errands. It get too hot very fast in cars during the summer. If I came up on this situation I think I would call the police or animal control but as an earlier poster wrote they may just be stopping for one item.
I once came up on a baby left in the car and went back into the business and reported it but they just called for the mother to come and kept an eye on the car. If I had had a cell phone I would have called the police my self and not waited to see how long the mother was in the store. It wasn't a grocery store either.

If I couldn't locate the owner I would call animal control, that's not right to leave your animals or kids in a hot car.

we human always want to show my mercy to the little animal, if i accidently meet such scene i will try to find the owner and contact the police . but i think all perhaps would be in vain because the police are so busy here and they even don't have enough time to solve issues of man themselves, so only can find the owener to help to poor animal.

Hi! I'm from Portugal and I have to say that things don't move very quickly on that issue round here. I always watch "Animal Hospital" and I think that's a very dignifying work they're doing, but here in Portugal we don't have associations like that one, as far as i know. So, if an animal was trapped in a car i guess I'd look for is owner first too and then I'd call the police but I don't think they'd do much for it, for my disappointment. I really think here in my country they should take much more sever measures when it concerns to this kind of problems. Maybe they should make it illegal to leave pets inside cars or even kill them and it should be penalized with financial sanctions or communtiy work. But that's just my opinion.

Id call the police..
Id also open the door myself, if i wasnt locked and take the animal out myself. I dont give a crud if its illegal or not really.
I have had several neighbors who I called animal control on who were not feeding or watering their animals. We care about people who locked their kids in a car.. we have all heard about it on the news.. why do this to an animal who has a fur coat? People are sick
