Is the main aim of a writer just to write a book only?

Whenever I listened any good poet or story teller I always asked him/her, to talk to a publisher and get his/her book published. But today I am confused abt it. When U have websites and blogs where u can show ur telent to people around the globe and in good number, then why one should go to a publishing house to get their book published, which can only be bought by few people whom u can count on fingers. and asking a question to everyone. Is the main aim of a writer is just to write a book only?

My main reason to write is to free up a story. It's therapy for me. Would it be wonderful to be published? Sure. But I think that I lack that sure all thing people look for. I do blog my short stories but just for the friends that choose to read them. Maybe someday it'll be different.

There are many reasons people write. It really depends upon your own personal goal with your writing. Some authors will sit down and pen out a book. Others may be doing very specific writing such as for publication in a journal, which is an entirely different style of writing. Some people simply journal, showing their work to no one. Not all writing is for the purpose of making monies. However, published is published. Even if you do not receive compensation, the writings you post online, in a website, a blog, or what not are still considered "published" writings, meaning you took it from your own personal storage area i.e. book, journal, laptop, etc, and put it out there for the public to view.

I'm sure every writer has their own personal aim. For some, having their pieces read by others give them a lot of pleasure, while others aim to make a living from writing. As such, one of the ways to achieve that would be to get a book published. In that way, there is possibility of earning residual income. I'm in the midst of collaborating a book with some writers. It's still in the beginning stages. I hope that the book would help students (it's a guide book) get better grades for a certain subject. To me, it is a way for me to supplement my hubby's income. But of course, a writer should not just limit his writing to just certain specified goals, I write for pleasure too. There are many things I ramble about and post them in writing sites. I am sure no one would be interested in reading them. For example, one of them is about a Sunday Morning Breakfast at McDonald's with my family. So it does depends on the writer...

I've been a writer since 1999, and my writing has been all over the Internet as well as in print newspapers and magazines. This year, my first two books will be coming in during the spring. Even though I have achieved this goal, it was not my primary goal as a writer. My primary goal is to reach readers on as many levels as I can be it through the Internet, through magazines, through newspaper, or through books. I like the idea of having a lot of work on the Internet because it's easy to pull up when sending out resumes and query letters, but I love the idea of being in print because it's something I can hold in my hand. So, I guess I'll always be the type of writer who jumps back and forth between electronic and print publishing.

I love to write and I completed a freelance journalism course in 2007. I write in my blog and several writing sites and have had articles published in some magazines. Writing is my passion although; sadly I have not made a great deal of money as the jobs are few and far between. My mother in law passed away late last year and as she lay dying she asked if I would write a book. My husband suggested compiling all the pieces I have ever written into one book but I question the wisdom of that idea as my articles are pretty much all over the internet and people can read them for free! A writer does not have to write a book, there are many forms of expression which come in the forms of articles, short stories etc... I still have the ambition to write a book; I'm not quite sure what it will be about yet.

I don't think so. I think that the main aim of a writer is to get his ideas around, and, as my English teacher consistently tells me, they *always* have a purpose for writing something. In most short stories I've read, the writers had the purpose of bringing out an issue that's important to society or delivering some form of "warning" in a literary work. What I mean is, some writers want to tell the world what it's going to become unless actions are taken. This is just an example, and not everyone does this, of course. =P Other writers want to share their ideas, describe an event that was imporant to them, focus on an universal theme, etc. Sometimes the writer's purpose is hidden, but if you look hard enough, you should find it, as it's always there.

I suppose every writer wants to be the one to give the greatest wisdom, the most wonderful thrill, etc. Why do they write? I suppose it's the same urge that birds have to sing. Cheers!!

There are some writers who wanted their writings to be publish and be part of someone else's possession even without the computer. Something that can be read on without opening the computer. Something that will lasts longer since it is written on a paper and hard bound.

I think that we all have different aims. We're all different, both as individuals, and as writers. Not everyone wishes to write the same things. Some may want to write books, others poetry, and some prefer to write biographies. Some writers prefer to write for a magazine or a newspaper. We all have our own interests. So, that's really why I don't think that we all want to write books.

I wouldn't say that. I'm a writer, but I don't expect any of my works to get published. I write because I enjoy it, and I want to share it with everyone else around the world. Sure, if one of my works were to be published that would be great and I would be overjoyed. I write because it's a way to free the overwhelming amount of ideas bounding around in my head; I write because it calms me down; I write just for the feeling of accomplishment when I surpassed my expectation level of writing, or I receive praise for it. Mainly I write, because I want to, because I enjoy it. Um, oops. I rambled. LOL

I guess it depends on the individual writer. I personally write because it's how I make my income. I write books, articles and short stories. My books sell much better than just a 'handful' of people I guess, so they actually do earn me a nice income. I write short stories because I love them. They also pay higher than online article writing. But I'm also very careful NEVER to post any of my copyrighted work to the internet without being paid for it. Once it's been posted online, a publisher will tell you that it's already been published by the owner of that website, so you can't sell it after that.

Well one pens down a book it is because he wants to write a book for fame, money, personal satisfaction or whatever the case maybe. But I dont think that a book which is printed on paper can ever be overtook in terms of readership by releasing e-books or whatever.

I am actually writing a book right now and I can tell you there is no way I am going to put it up online. It has taken me about 4 years and I am not even close to half way done. I am going to go with a publishing company because I want my book to sell and to earn a profit. If it is truly a good piece of work then it will sell to more than a handful of people through a publisher. I would maybe put some excerpts up online and sell my book through them but the whole thing is going to a publisher.

I think the main aim is to express what writer should do and develop writer though. For example someone write about live. The writer has to develop about story live, resistance, happy and sad strory live. Then the writer has to express why it can be happen to he/she. How abaot the feel too. Happy , sad, etc. The other side, maybe writer get some money from it written. It's no problem. That is good thing, write something to get money. I think everyone need money. So that no matter.

hi informer! well, i think writers have different reasons for writing. some just want to be able to express their creative juices. when their minds start running, it is hard not to get them on paper. then there is the thought of convincing people to side with the author's views. even in a novel that is fiction, the writer gives of himself to his readers. he shares his thoughts and world views on certain issues. so i guess it is that. take care and God bless you! happy mylotting! :D

No, the main aim of a writer isn't always to get a book published. Writers come in all different shapes and sizes. Some want to publish a book and some don't. And that's OK. Publishing a book isn't the ONLY way a writer can gain recognition. Like you mentioned, they can choose to set up a website or a blog. However, it's not an 'either or' situation. Both ways can work side by side or seperately.

I agree with you, a book may sell a few thousand copies,a website can be viewed by millions. I am a web writer and I have no intention of ever writing a book. I have written enough in the past year to fill a book, but all of my writing has been published on the Internet at article sites, and as website content. I have also posted a lot on blogs and at social sites like myLot. I earn money every day from writing. I have previously worked for a book publisher and for a print and journal publisher. I have also been involved in marketing and selling books.

No I don't think so I believe that a writer is just like a musician or an artist because they are all trying to produce an inner vision that they've had. Writing is like painting a picture with words and it's one of my favorite forms of artwork. When writing a book authors are trying to create a whole world with characters and emotions and storylines and all sorts of things like that. I think that books really can take you to a different world because they are just so thought out and put together extremely well.

No the main goal of a writer is not neccesarily to write a book. But I would sincerely hope that not too many look at the concept of the internet as replacing the need to write books. Not everyone has access to the internet that can access a library or bookstore to read the published items. Also one reason people continue to publish books is mooney. You get paid much better for printed works than internet ones. I also find something to be much better about actually holding a book when I sit down to read than looking at a computer screen to do it. I am hoping to be a writer over time, and the internet is hopefully a good place to get started and get my name known a little once I have something worthy, however my goal is to write a book one day.
