I did'nt know it was possible to upgrade Windows 98.
I think You'd have a lot less of a problem by saving Your files onto disc and then doing a complete install from scratch.
Or are You saying that You have tried the Vista disc and it's not installing? In that case You must enter the BIOS and set the machine to boot from disc.

I can't understand what files You might be missing, The windows disc should be self contained, unless it's a bad copy and some of the data is corrupted.
there should be no reason that You can't boot from the disc even on a completely new or wiped hard drive, If You tell me what file it's looking for I might to be able to research the reason for it.

I think you should wait till Windows 7 is released. The reviews say its much much better than vista. Vista was never a good OS. If you cant spend the amount for windows 7, go for open source like linux...

Do NOT buy Windows Vista for a computer running Windows 98. It will not run on such old and outdated hardware. At the very least you should run the Windows Vista Upgrade advisor. That way you will KNOW if Vista will work or not.

Here is probably the best advice that anyone will give you in this discussion. Take VISTA back to the store you bought it from and buy Windows XP. XP is much more reliable and more stable...

You were still using Windows 98 so i think you might be having old configuration, so first check your PC might not support windows XP or Vista.
So before migrating to XP or Vista check that your PC will be able to run that.
If everything is good then I say Windows XP will be good choice.
