myLot should keep statistics on that stuff so that people would get a clue what not to post:
What's your favorite color? posted 9,346 times
What's your favorite song? Posted 8,745 times
What color are your knickers? Posted 3,752 times
What do you all think?

I don't agree with all this.
I know it will be better if a particular discussion is posted only once on the site, but then most of the people here on mylot are here because the site is not that much strict about these things. Had it not been so, there are so many forums and sites out there that most of us can earn a lot more posting there.

Well don't worry, it's mostly just said tongue in cheek. And yes, I do like myLot for being looser about things than some other forums. But too loose isn't good either!

I sure am not here for the money. $10 a month doesn't actually pay the mortgage!

I think my words doesn't mean what I do.
Let me try to clear my self up.
If some one want to just have a good discussion, no matter if a good discussion for the person in question is asking about the color of the knickers, they should do it without thinking about infractions and bans and in the process if they earn $10 then they can enjoy a chocolate or two saying they shared what they had in their minds with people out there and might have helped them in the process.
Now if some one really wants money his or her being here only is in itself wrong let along starting meaningful discussions.

Yes, I would definitely agree with that comment dawnald, as it you can some times be posting the same thing as some body else.. and people may think that they have already posted to this subject.
Maybe they will change it??
I am only new to this yet so I am still getting to grips with it all

This mostly all said tongue in cheek, of course, but wouldn't it be great if there were a reliable and easy way to check and see if a topic has already been done? Doesn't mean you can't do it again, especially if you have a new take on it. But how often do we come here and see the same old topics over and over and over again. I'm sure most of us want to be original.

Well I'll skip the first 3 questions because I've already responded to all of them this week at least xxx times!
Yes I think a section on repeated topics could be amusing
Would anyone read it?
What about if all the repeated topics except the first one were to get deleted

I think it's a very brilliant idea! I really hate seeing the same discussion over and over again or maybe they could put it the top 10 discussions started by users that they won't allow anymore . At least myLot is polite enough not to delete those discussions considering the number of similar posts...

Sometimes they get deleted, sometimes they don't! Probably depends on whether somebody reports it...

You have the right idea and mylot people are trying to limit repetition of discussions. But then, you have to feel for the moderators here as well. We are more than 160,000 members and most of them participate just for money. So, there are bound to be a lot of similar/same topics and checking each of them would not be possible for a human being.
I hope the owners start using crawlers, etc for monitoring this.
happy mylotting :)

Its true this one liners get repeated many times. Keeping statistics is a easy task. My lot webpages are designed using ASP.NET programming language. And ASP.NET has many options by which we can easily keep the statistics of the contents.

Goodness, those type of discussions have been posted lots of times. I would have never of thought to search it. But I generally do search discussions before starting a discussion especially if it isn't a discussion that isn't personal. Though I don't tend to start too many discussions anyway.

I don't search before I start a discussion myself but a lot of people do.

I could not agree more. There should be something on here that prevents the constant repetition of nonsense disguising itself as a discussion. If I looked at with naive eyes, I would say perhaps it is the new members of the site asking those types of questions, not knowing how often they have already been asked. The sad truth as we know is the people asking have higher rating scores to be classed as new members. I feel deep sympathy for anyone who can only think to ask such questions regularly and wonder how they manage to get dressed on a morning.

Now there's a discussion topic. How do you manage to get dressed in the morning? Yes you? You out there with the one liner "discussions"... lol

I think that's a good idea. Yahoo answers does something like that to prevent the same question from being posted over and over again. You search to see if anyone's ever asked it first and then if nobody has asked it you can post it.

I was saying it really tongue in cheek but it does sound like not such a bad idea after all!

I think it's a great idea! I try to be original and that would help me out alot! I would check out the page even though I'm over a hundered. I think it should also give a timeframe of how long ago it was asked..unless it has been asked over a certain amount of times. I wouldn't mind answering the same question if they were a year or 6 months apart.

I think if it was asked a long time ago, why not repeat it, you're right. Most people aren't even going to remember.

It would be nice if there was an area, especially for the Newer people coming in here all of the time, of what discussions are not appropriate and usually will end up getting removed for sure. I know many times when these are removed many will not understand why, and get upset and choose to leave here. If they could have something like this we might be able to stop some of the many confusions in here as well.

There seems to be the attitude that you should have read the guidelines and you will know. But I think it would be nice if new people would be notified when a discussion gets deleted. Even if you read them more than once, not everybody is going to remember every detail.

But chances are it would be listed somewhere where the majority of those types of posters wouldn't bother to look anyway. It would probably be more helpful to catalog the more serious and interesting topics though. There really is a wealth of information (and misinformation as well, I'm sure) here that could be useful to a lot of people if topics were grouped together better.
But just for amusement and curiosity's sake, a listing of those types of "discussions" could be kind of fun....maybe it could be a 4th category alongside "users by location/rating" and "top referrers".

That could be. Some of the really intellectual ones can be hard to answer, especially for people who are just learning English!
