Hi everyone been so long since I started discussion so I thought I'd start one again. My husband and I decided not to enroll my daughter in pre-school. We really think that she can't handle a classroom environment yet. I want to buy her educational toys and books though. I'd really like to ask for advice from you guys on what toys should I buy. I already bought crayons, coloring books, a xylophone and building blocks. Is there anything you guys could add? Looking forward to see your responses. Thanks in advance. Happy myLotting!!

Hi yuna, you haven't said how old your child is, but books with the alphabet are good and also numbers which helps them to count to 10...books can be really helpful as well...littleowl

I have found that V-Tech items are tough and water ressistant as well. They have many good teaching tools to pick from. Happy shopping.

Reading is the most important thing, so buy her plenty of books and spend time reading with her every day. You didn't say how old your daughter is, though, which would make a difference in my answer. If she's four, then she really needs the preschool experience to help her get ready for Kindergarten. If she's still only 3, preschool can wait for another year. The experiences you give her are more important than the toys. Children learn by playing, but they also learn by talking with you and going a variety of places. Everywhere you go, talk to her about what you're experiencing. You can use moments like these to teach even without her knowing it. You might buy a couple of learning games, like letters or numbers Bingo and spend time playing those with her. The more experiences you give her, the more vocabulary she will pick up. A large vocabulary is very important when learning to read. Let her help you cook and bake. Do simple science experiments, like mixing two colors together to get a third. Don't just be satisfied with her knowing how to count. Give her actual things to count so that she can learn what those numbers mean. Go out in your backyard and talk about the things you see. Education has everything to do with experience, and that's something you can give her without sending her to preschool. However, if she needs to develop socialization skills, a longer attention span, or listening skills, preschool will give her a chance to learn them. As you may be able to tell, I am a Kindergarten teacher, and the things I've told you are things I tell my parents.

Hi there sbeauty! Thank you so much for the detailed response. I really appreciate it. My daughter is 3 years old and yes I did buy her some books and I sometimes read it to her problem is she doesn't seem to express interest in it when I try to read it to her but I'll make that I'll take your advise about taking her different places and talk to her about it. We probably need to do more of that more often. Kinda difficult for me though because I work in the night shift. Thanks again!

WHy wont u send her to pre school yet?? I believe it should be a better learning environment for her too.. THough u might be able to buy her educational toys to play with, but she lacks a playmate to communicate with.. SOmetimes, it's not thru toys or whatever for a child to learn, instead, it's thru friends ^_^ BUt since u have decided with your husband, i guess all those what u have bought for u should be more than enough.. hehe ^_^ Because i din even get so much to play with when i was at her age.. lol =D

I always had a lot of musical toys for my children. The toys were fun and gave them a love for music. Music also makes math easier for them when they're in school for some reason, but it's been proven. Just get something that lets her be creative, you seem to have done a good job so far. Be sure to play with her, too. Color with her, make up songs about letters and numbers and count blocks with her. See if you can both make a song on the xylophone by taking turns hitting notes. And have fun!

I was able to make up Old McDonald Had A Farm on the Xylophone . Then I sing it to her. But of course I sing to her the do-re-mi song as well. She finds it quite fun. I actually thought of buying Classical music CDs but I couldn't afford it then . Thanks for reminding me I will try to get or download classical music as soon as I have the chance.

By the way how old is your daughter? if she is 4-5 you can buy Alphabet associated with pictures. That's one way she would be able to identify letters and would eventually be able to read and write. You must buy books with big prints and illustrative pictures where she could identify words associated with pictures. You can teach your kid to read But start it with Alphabets. Make learning fun by teaching her in a form of games. For example, you will be teaching her how to count? you can use objects. Let her identity how many, how much.. you can teach simple addition and subtraction using objects. Make it fun... The most common problems in school today is reading and Math. There are many kids who can not read.. and can not solve simple math problems because they were not taught properly at an early age. One on one teaching is very effective and if you can do that to your child to start with, that would be very good. She will excel when she will start her formal schooling. Believe me, I am a teacher in the elem. School and that is our common Problem, Reading and comprehension and Math problem solving. Analyzing and understanding is hard when the kid has no strong foundation. Good luck.

Hi yuna I will say reading books. There are some books that you can read to her I don't see anything else because you had said it all. She is at a young age so you don't want to put to much things before her.

You don't say how old is she. If she's already 4-5, than my opinion is that a society life is much more appropriate for her age than staying at home. I know mny home-schooles kids, and they miss the society. You can not protect your child forever(unfortunately). From what I understand, she's a normal developed child - maybe she's too spoled, can it be?And because of that she wants her environment and everything around at her"command",I'm just guessing here. The child has to experience things and behaviours, in order to learn how to protect himself when growing older. That can be done only by self-learning.You know that. Anyway, it's your choice, and every parents hopes to make the right decisions. There are lot of educational toys, almost everything is educational, because they teach the child something else. How to fit shapes, how to colour, words, animals, and so on. I think that you're the best to know what your child has already and what will enjoy doing next. I don't know if I'd been of any help, I certailny tried. Good luck!

Well I think toys are good for children to develop and have fun. I have a toddler and now she is at school and is learning a lot. There are lots of educational toys, like chic co brand which is ideal for young kids. Toys with lots of colours and sounds attract children since they love movements and hears music and sounds.

I think you should look into the "my baby can read" program. It is quite amazing what toddlers can achieve through this program.

Hello Yuna, sounds like your daughter has a lot to play/learn with already... but don't forget playdough though. Outdoor fun can do a lot to enhance her playing/learning experiences also.

Blocks are your best bet. The crayons are nice, but give her plain paper, that is more creative. Musical instruments are really good, like your xylophone. I would just let her hang around with you, and let her do things like play with your measuring cups and spoons and pots and pans. Talk to her a lot. You are really the best educational toy that there is.

So many excellent educational toys, but it's not all about the learning toys. Children need some kind of social skills & pre-school offers that. Pre-school would be the best way to go, but if not, I would start searching ebay because they have some really good learning toys... or just type in "educational toys"... you will get some good ideas... Good luck... BY the way, read to her everyday & that will also help her grow & learn... :D

Cubes for counting and fun sorts of number lines up to 10 are good things to buy. It will be necessary to buy much paper and painting materials. Construction toys are role play ideas would be useful. Excellent quality picture books would be necessary. Musical instruments would be great for developing creativity. Buttons for threading and play dough for model making would be superb. Good luck making the ideal learning environment that you daughter will enjoy.
