do you forward religious chain letters/email because "god is watching?"

have you ever received messages which have religious content?
i have received a lot in the past years, all via email and text message. some even contain really heartwarming messages. then the heartwarming message is abruptly aborted by this statement: "if you believe in god, send this to 25 people and your prayers will be answered. if you don't forward the message, something bad will happen."
isn't that emotional blackmail?
i think that god will still listen to your prayers, regardless of whether you click on that forward button. and i feel like it's selfish for someone to pass on the bad luck. it's like giving a neighbor spoiled food that someone else gave to you. but that's just me.
how about you? do you get scared by those chain letters? have you ever been "forced" to forward those messages, just to be sure?
is it weird for you that friends are willing to send you a message that threatens bad luck unless you pass it on? or do you believe it is a way of getting people to do god's work?

Hi,
I hate these messages. Personally I am a born again aethist and do not beleive in any kind of bad luck for not passing them on and I never do pass them on, nothing majorly bad has happened to me for it,. Secondly I think it may be a bit harsh to say it's emotional blackmail as your friends probably only passed it on to you as they were genuinely thinking there maybe something in and back luck may befall them if they don't do it. I am pretty sure nobody passes them on with the intention of bad luck being inflicted on the recipient.
I do tend to agree that it is kind of thoughtless of them to forward them on but don't beleive they do it with any kind of malicious intent.
The messages are however a pain in the neck and they would surely stop altogether if everybody unanimously decided to stop forwarding them.
We live in hope.
Cheers, ian

yep, that's true, most of my friends find something inspiring so they forward it. but i do have the occasional friend who writes in the title "i sent it, just in case..." that means she actually feared something will happen to her, so she's passing on the bad luck. hehe. that's not emotional blackmail, but it's a little selfish to actually pass on bad luck, right?
after all, if they find something inspiring about the message, they can edit it and delete all the treats. that's what i do. if people can take the time to send inspiration, i'm sure they can also find the time to simply delete the harmful parts.
the emotional blackmail i was referring to was the actual content of the email/ message, not the sender. =) and apparently, the emotional blackmail works as many people still send the messages. oh well. =)

hehe... come to think of it, it IS every kind of blackmail! =)
perhaps a born-again atheist is a former christian/ muslim/ buddhist/ put-religion-here, who recently became an atheist. that's my take. am i right, ianlockley?
if not, perhaps it would help satisfy our curiosity if you told us what it means. =)

i often get these kind of emails and SMS and whenever i have credits on my phone, i forwarded them, not because i need to forward them but sometimes, those kind of messages provides a litle prayer and nice thoughts so that's one of the reasons why i forward them.
but whenever i encounter such emails that would say that this is a curse if you don't forward it, i automatically delete it or ignore the file. =)

i once made a "chain letter," saying that if you have faith in god, then you will NOT believe that an email's threats are more powerful than god's blessings. hehe. i just couldn't stand it anymore so i tried something that was, hopefully, productive.
yet there are still some easily swayed people who still forward out of fear. sigh... yes, i like those forwarded emails that have inspiring messages. as long as it doesn't say "you will have bad luck!" or "your family will get sick!" hehe ^_^

Well, i dont really look twice at those kind of mails. I just try not read that part though.
Seriously, one cant believe these messages will increase ones faith or improve our condition or anything. But i do get angry at the real author of the message for using God's name in vain.
Not only are they using God's name in vain, they're trying to manipulate the hearts of believers, which is low-down and dirty of them!
Some religions go out in war in their God's name, which is rather silly because there's no such thing as "Holy War" or "Killing for God" (in fact the phases are self-contradictory). Using God's name to get believes to fight another religion is dirty and something people who dont think will mindlessly follow.
Using the same trick for getting a message passed around the net is also the same thing - something that attacks the conscience of the person reading them.
If its possible, i would file a case against these chain-mail creators, unfortunately, they cannot be traced back to the start.
Don't let people or mails mess with your mind, just do what you think is right. No one appreciates a threat in a mail. Its better off deleted.

yes, delete all threats, sned only good thoughts. that should do it. =)
although you and i know better than believing the threats, i really have friends who do believe them... sigh. they really believe something bad might happen, so they end up sending the chain letter.
believing that a chain letter can change your fate is like believing that god is weaker than the chain letter. so sending the chain letter is like saying you DON'T believe in the power of god, right?

I know very well what you're talking about. I used to think the same thing and end up forwarding the letters once too. Then i started ignoring them.
You cant argue with what people believe, but chain-letter authors will just take advantage of it, thats the only problem. But i dont think it hurts much. Some of them do have some good stuff in it.
Happy mylotting

I will forward some chain things but not for any reason other then I like what it says beyond that. Like there was one a bit ago about friends that I liked. If I can cut out the chain part... I do.
I think God really has better things to do then check My e-mail.

"it's not like he has a checklist of people who sent the email."
Hardly likely, LOL (but what do we know about the Universal Database?!)
You can be certain, however, that certain people ARE very interested in who forwards that email, inspirational, jokey, threatening or otherwise. Resist the temptation to forward ANY of them!

I will not forward such mails to anybody.Few months back,I received such mail,in which they threatened that I would be in great trouble and my family members would die ....something like this. I just deleted that one and only those who are not able imagine as what is what, are sending and forwarding such mails. Also few days back, I happened to receive one mail, blaming and targeting one particular religion, for one of their activities.I did not forward, but I am keeping that mail in my in box.

yes, a lot of threats have been sent in the past decade, i'm sure... and what's funny is that they were sent by friends!
oh, an email targetted one religion for its activities? hm, care to share more?
it's good you don't get easily fooled by these threats. more power. ;)

I am a religious person, but I hate those emails. I can't stand that sappy tear jerker type stuff. Also they are not true stores and some of them contain outright lies. You can go to snopes.com and check out all those religious chain letter and emails.

there are also syndicates who actually use god as an excuse to ask for money.
if you don't get fooled, they get irked and say "i hope god is with you," but in a maliciously patronizing way.
going back to the topic, i hate those emails too. it's one thing if a friend sent it to me because she loves what's on it. but if she sent it out of fear... well, if you fear an email will bring you bad luck, then you don't have enough faith in god.

I often received such text messages. However, I suppose these kind of messages are irrelevant and does not make any sense. I do not forward these kind of messages to anyone, even if I find a warning in the message that if I do not forward it to 20 persons, I may have some bad luck. I believe, whatever has to happen, will happen, irrespective of forwarding the message or otherwise.

some people even forward it to email groups. if it is forwarded to a whole email group, then hundreds of people receive it. then they forward like a dozen threatening chain letters every week, which floods the email group.
when that starts to happen, we right out tell the sender/s to stop it, as it is spam and it is impolite to send those messages to an entire email group.
that happened to one of my email groups. the sender actually got irked, saying she just wanted to pass on the message because she was scared something bad will happen to her. wow, is that right? you're afraid something bad will happen to you, so you PASS ON the bad luck? isn't that just selfish and thoughtless?
it's like openly putting a curse on a bunch of people because cursing them will remove the curse previously put on you. sigh. hate those messages, too.

yeah i have recieved plenty of such mails blackmailing us that unless we forward the mails to atleast 15 to 20 ppl, then the god's wrath would be bestowed upon us. Lots of Bull actually...
not just religions threats.. sometimes they even have supernatural content...
Sometimes i they even threaten us with ghosts and ghouls and so and so...
initially i used to forwards the mails coz of fear of retribution...
now it goes straight to my trash inbox...

Yup, when I remembered I ever did once. I realized that it was a stupid thing to do so. It is not logical why I should forward this chain email and probably the one that started this email would lough because his/her intention was working. Currently, when I receive that kind of thing, I will just ignore it or even deleted from my inbox immediately.

I receive a lot of religious forwards and chain mail. I don't read them, just mark/delete. I think they are very annoying, and it's almost a bit rude when the people who send it to me KNOWS that I am atheist. Everyone has their right to their own believes, but don't push them on me.
(I delete any kind of chain mail, not only religious ones. Just to make that clear :P)

hm, perhaps your friends forgot you're an atheist? sometimes they just "send to all." kinda thoughtless, but that's what some people do.
it gets annoying when they send to everyone because they also send to emailgroups. and if that happens, hundreds of people who are using the emailgroup for other resons will then get the unsolicited chain letter...
how about you make a letter about atheists and send them to your friends? perhaps that will remind them that sending religious emails to you is insulting to you. hehe. oh, that was evil of me. forget i said it. ;D

I have always received this kind of letters through email. I believe you are write in what you say but nevertheless just to let you know I forward some of them not because God is watching but because I read something nice in it that I think people can relate to. I don't think it will cause bad luck if I don't forward it. I believe some of the words there have very nice meaning that can touch someones heart. I still believe prayer is the key to everything we need though.

sometimes if i like the message, what i do is i edit the content (i delete the parts that say "send this or else")
then i forward it. that way, it's not a chain letter; it's just a forwarded inspirational message. =) my friends won't get goosebumps the same way i did when i first read the letter.
you may try it, too. ^_^ it's nice receiving heartwarming messages from friends, especially if there's no attached threat. it's like forwarding a prayer.

Please read my response (on page #3, I think). It is NOT OK to forward any chain letter of any kind, threatening or not. The main intent of most people who start these things (though not usually realised by most people who forward them) is to harvest valid email addresses for spam purposes.
By forwarding any mail of this kind, you are selling your friends down the line (unless you follow my instructions).

yes, it's alright to forward messages. but if there's something threatening there, i edit the message.
it's rather easy, so if i'm going to take the effort of sending it, i might as well send a nice, inspiring message that does not contain the threat "if you don't forward this, something bad will happen to you!"
otherwise, if i don't have the time to edit out the threatening part, i don't send it. sending it without removing the threatening part would be like sending a basket of goodies with a few rotten apples. =)

hi jones, Yes it is a emotional blackmail indeed. Instead of sending these messages you can help the needy in the same time/money. God may consider this act is better than forward of the message. Neither believe these nor I encourage. If you are clean at your heart no bad luck touch you. Don't believe in this and don't spread those type threatening message to any others.

true, god does not deprive people of blessings simply because they didn't send an email that actually used his name in vain.
besides, believing that the email can change one's life is like saying they don't believe god will protect them no matter what. forwarding out of fear is a sign of not having faith in god. right?
