My 3 qualities in a friend would have to be.........
Honesty
Able to laugh and have a good time
And Loyal
Your 3 sounds just about right.
A true friend must always have your back, must always keep your secerets and must always be there for a good laugh and a shoulder to cry on. And vice versa!

* accepts me for who i am but would tell me when i need some reality check
* honest, even if sometimes we will be at each others' throat, i prefer talking than pretending everything's ok
* know how to balance time between friends, family and other relationships
i don't exert effort making friends... but i do exert effort to keep them

I think it should be kind, tolerant and loyal. And I consider that the friendship will be everlasting if people have these three qualities.

before, i would choose who my friends should be. what would anybody look for in a friend? hmm of course you want your friend to be like you. in my case, my best friends happen to be those who are my exact opposites. friendship happens when you least expect it. why we lasted this long (more than 2 decades) is because we were always there for each other ups and downs, good and bad times. so the 3 qualities:
1. my exact opposite
2. always there when you're down
3. always there when you're happy

Humanity, honesty and a sense of laughter are the three most important qualities that I try to bring to a friendship- so that is what I look for as well.
A sense of humanity is important. It gives you a common grounding.
Honesty is equally as important. People need to be honest otherwise what is the point of having friends?
As for laughter- sometimes it is truly the one thing a person needs more than anything else!

They have to be trustworthy, kind, and have a good sense of humor.
If the friendship is all lies it really isn't friendship at all. :]

I would go for your first and last qualities but in the middle, I'll have trustworthy instead of loyal - I would rather have someone who has a good personality independently that some people who are overtly loyal but suck on their friends' identities - unfortunately, I know such people - which is why I value trustworthiness over loyalty :) Also, trustworthy people are more or less likely to be loyal also :)
Thanks for the response on my discussion!

If I had to choose just 3 qualities in a friend the first I would choose is the person would have to be honest with me no matter what. For example say this friend knew my partner was cheating on me. I would much rather have them come tell me than leave me in the dark to find out the hard way and maybe be hurt twice as bad. The second thing I would require of a friend would be the willingness to listen without judging and speaking to others about it behind my back. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but I don't think it's fair to judge others by our own beliefs then talk about them behind their back. I think the term they use for this is two-faced. Lastly I believe a friend should be someone you enjoy being around and spending time with. If you really don't enjoy being with someone or spending time with them they are not a true friend.

First,i don't like pretended friends. So my friend should be straight, what you see is what you get.Second,i like kind-hearted friends.Third,my friends should be also loyal to me.May be the three is not enough.
