Do you color your hair?

I used to color my hair - nothing too wild - just to cover the gray. However I stopped because of a pregnancy and breastfeeding. I was concerned that the chemicals in the coloring would adversely affect my baby. I don't even know if there is a connection to coloring and having problems with babies, I just didn't want to take a chance. I didn't have anything that wasn't real - no otc medications, etc. But now that he's independent I would like to again cover the gray...
So do you? Do you have a favorite brand? Color? How often? Do you go to a salon? Do you think it hurts your hair to color too much?

I do, but despite the occasional white hair...I don't really have to cover, nor would I want to cover grey if I had it xD
How often? Only a couple times a year. Usually Kool Aid..red turns out the best in my hair...when I use kool aid, I only use it for the ends of my hair.
When I can afford it, I get revlon black permanent dye (it's the only ting that lasts for nearly a month in my hair, for some reason, xD).
It does dry my hair out alot, but if I use enough conditioner, it's no big deal.

I have never colored my hair. Well, maybe... I put semi-permanet color in that washed out after a few weeks, when I was a younger. My hair has gotten a lot darker more and more, the older I get. Actually it is getting lighter, but not the good lighter, the GREY lighter. I am not happy it is happening mostly in the front around my face and it ages me.
I would like to color, but I don't want anything permanent. I wanted to try henna, but I don't really know how to get the best results with it.
If I got deserate for something permanent I would buy something that was more natural and not tested on animals, like Herbatint. Though, I definately do not want anything that will cause me to have to keep coloring my roots every few weeks. I would just prefer the hair I had as a teenager back. Do they sell that in a bottle Ha, ha :oD
Good luck finding a hair color :o).

Thanks for the excellent advice! I'm going to look for Herbatint this weekend. I'm not keen on having things tested on animals either and am looking for something natural. Thanks so much and if you have teenager in a bottle, please let me know...

I used to color my hair, mostly for covering up the grey strands that are peppering through it. I finally just gave up on it. and decided to live with my own 'naturalness' lol. I too worry about all the chemicals that's in that stuff. It's wonderful that while you were pregnant that you gave it up for a while. I mean, who knows for sure what that stuff might do to a fetus?! You put it on, it sits on your head for the prescribed time, and you just know that your scalp is absorbing some of those chemicals. (At least, that's how I see it.) I used to do mine at home when I colored, and I used L'Oreal.
As far as it hurting your hair...my one daughter colors all the time, and I think it's left her hair more dry and vulnerable to breakage over the years. Then too, I have a girlfriend my age who has done it for so many years I can't count lol. Her hair is very dry and brittle, and she believes it's the coloring agents that made it that way. It does make you wonder!

Thanks so much for sharing - I am thinking twice about doing anything again. I have thought about pulling them out... Isn't there a caution that pulling out gray doubles the amount?
Do you think there are any organic methods which don't involve chemicals?

Hi Dee, I colored my hair with my oldest son, and it didn't take very well on me, my hair is VERY dark almost black, but when my son was born he had the tint of the color I tried to die my hair (plum) in his hair!!! Talk about funny!

Yes, lol, my husband was like....um, isn't that the color YOU were going for lol You could only tell it was that color when he was in the sun, but whenever people saw it they were just like "WOW is his hair really that color or did you use food coloring?" lol So I don't advise any pregnant woman coloring her hair :) GO FOR IT Now! What color were you thinking?

You're too funny! Maybe a light brown for myself... nothing spectacular - just enough so you don't see the awful gray anymore.

That is too funny! Thanks so much for sharing! Now we have medical proof that there is sharing between the mother and baby...I'm so glad I didn't try it myself while he was inside. Now that he's out and about though I think I will... Have a great day!

Until now, I have not colored my hair even once. I am grateful to God that I have not developed any white hairs till now. I am not in favor of coloring the hair either to camouflage the white hair or give it a fashioned look. The natural black hair is what I prefer. But can't help if the hair turns white at an early age. Then, it is better to color it. As far as my opinion, natural hair color is my first preference.

I used henna to color my hair but then switched to dye one my girl was born but didn't use any colour at all when I was expecting. Henna is cold so I chose colouring agents as that way avoided catching a cold. Infact recently something funny happened , I had a fight with my hubby the dfay we were supposed to go for a monthly shopping and he went alone and he even bouhgt the colouring creame I prefer, I also kept it away without really looking at it. I had to go for a party the next day and I was running late so I justtook iot out of the shelf without switching on the light and then staright away went to the parlour. The girl there mixed it and applied it to my hair, suddenly I realised dyewas changing colour to red, I use dark brown shade, I then asked her to show me the pack andrelaised it was the burgundy shade. EEKS , I came back home took another bottle out and just applied it over the hair again. Butwhat a fright I got

Yes, I colour my hair too. I have had grays since the time I don’t remember (high school maybe) but its profusion has increased only in the past few years. Now the thing is, in my late 20s about 8 to 9 yrs back, I was suddenly taken in by the colouring bug and experimented with a lot of expensive international brands. Things were good, things were colourful and I was happy. Then one day, I started noticing how the grays were winning the battle and to my shock, I think I aided them by adding on the colours. So now I am stuck…if I continue colouring my hair, I’m sure the chemicals expedite graying, and I have more gray hair but if I don’t, I look much much older than I am. So I think looks do matter and so every month, once, I colour my hair. Nothing expensive types, I lost a lot of money on them, the usual inexpensive sachet from Godrej.

Wow - you think that by coloring your hair you actually sped up the graying process? I've never heard of that before but it's something to consider... I don't want to be colorful - just one color like I used to have - I guess I'd like to turn back time a bit on my head.

Hi deejean
I don't color my hair.
I have my Grey hairs. That is natural to have Grey hair at my age.
I want to be natural.
The dyes uses some chemicals that are more harmful to our body.
Of course, now there are natural herbal hair dyers available in our country.
But I am not for any coloring of hairs.
Happy mylotting

Thanks for the response but I'm hoping that I'm too young to have grey right now. If I were about twenty years older I'd have no problem being natural...

Hello deejean06 and welcome to mylot. This is a very good discussion for many reasons than one. First off i have in the past colored my hair and just as you nothing to wild but it had nothing to do with coloring grays. I think that there may be some kind of connection between dying hair and pregnancies. I say this because when I was reading through my pregnancy do's and don'ts I had recieved from my physician it said no dying your hair. Although I haven't asked him why I think now that you sadi something I will. I do not have a favorite brand of dye I usually go to the salon and let my hair dresser color my hair for me I allow my hair to get colored maybe twice a year because I heard that frequent coloring can cause hair lost so I am not willing to even take that risk. Well deejean60 thanks for sharing and thank you for allowing me to sahring my thoughts and experiences with you as well and until nest time NakitaLikely3617 is out, have a nice day!

Thanks for sharing! I never heard about hair loss due to coloring - that's new also! I'm learning all sorts of interesting tidbits about the coloring process in this discussion. I love it! Some people have had positive experiences and some people have had really negative ones. I guess every body is different and every head of hair is different! This is going to be a tough decision for me...

i only cover the gray too. but i only use henna products. they are 100% natural, and they also look natural, blend with my natural chestnut brown hair. i like it. i have never tried chemical products. i use henna every season. but it really depends on the person. my hair is fine, and it absorbs it longer, maybe for 3 months. on some people, it only last 6 to 8 weeks. so, u have to try it yourself to see how it will work on you. everyone is different.

Many people in this discussion have tried henna and said positive things about it so I'm thinking that I'll try that soon. The nice thing about coloring is that it eventually comes out so you can try something else! Thanks for the response.

i use to color my hair when i have a time but now that i am very busy and even i could not comb my hair i use to cut my hair very short and not to bother my appearance because if i always go to the mirror and see my personality then i will probably getting start to make over.

I don't want to use something that will hurt my hair or myself. I think you should keep on looking for coloring that is a bit easier on you and your scalp. Good luck and thanks for the response.

I used to color my hair all of the time. I just got really bored with my natural color (medium dark brown) and liked to change it up. I'm wishing now that I would have just left it alone. It's incredibly dry and coloring it only dried it out more. So yeah, I think it's damaging to your hair. I didn't really have a favorite brand...but I despised Herbal Essences! I tried a coloring from them that was supposed to be a dark brown that had a red tint to it, I went to work the next day with bright pink hair! I was not a happy camper!

I wouldn't be a happy camper with pink hair either... so sorry about that. I will stay away from Herbal Essences now that I know the box color isn't true to life. I think maybe I'll look to see if there are organic alternatives. Maybe something natural will not be so drying.

I changed my hair color about two years ago, and I've kept this hair color ever since. It is annoying when you have to it every couple of weeks, when you're natural hair color begins to show. But I guess you just get used to it after a while. Now it doesn't bug me so much, mainly because I really like the hair color that I have now.

I never tried coloring my hair eversince. I just don't like it. However, I tried dying it before to make it more black but that was I guess just two times in my life. When I do my hair treatment, it is mostly straightening and waxing but never coloring.

You started coloring your hair rather early. You being pregnant shows that you are still young but having Grey hair so early? Anyway I do not think the chemicals in the color would be entering the body in any way when applied to the hair. The hair does take nourishment from the body but I wonder if it gives back anything to the body. No harm though in taking abundant precautions.

You're so sweet to say that I'm young. I'm actually not that young - just didn't find my true love until later in life and then had a miscarriage. Thankfully last year we were blessed with a healthy beautiful boy. I tried not to injest anything in any way that would remotely harm the growing baby. But now I'm once again free to dump anything I want on my head and I would like the grey gone so I can look as if I'm a young mother... Thanks for the response!

Thanks for the advice! Some people have commented that their hair has dried due to the coloring. If henna has conditioner in it then it gets rid of the dry hair. This is a possibility! Thank you!
