When i was elementary and high school, i enrolled in public school. My mom doesnt want me to go to the private ones because the tuition is double and even triple the tuition in public schools. And the other reasons are the students there according to her, not smart as the ones in the public school because the competition to enter the public schools is more challenging and difficult and yes, there probablity discrimination among the students (i dont say that all the private have such things) but i think there's probability that students will be differentiated based on their background... how rich she is or he is... like that. When i was in elementary up to high school, i also observed that most of the students who attended the private schools are proud people, they just want to show what they have... thats majority students that i met at that time... but some are really humble and nice. But now, i dont hould i think about private schools and public schools... For me, private schools have better facilities compare to the public ones... and this is independently stand for provide the service thats why its more expensive than the public. Hehehe... I changed my ideas towards these schools after i enrolled in private university. Hehehe... For me there's no difference between education in public and private schools, maybe only the facilities, the private ones have better facilities. Hmmm...

I went to private schools on both elementary and high school. It won't matter to me if my parents enrolled me in a public school. I had to wear leather shoes back when i was in high school and my hair was too short. Nothing below my eyebrows and ears. We need to go to school so early and leave late. I think it's a lot stricter in private schools than public.

When I was growing up I went to a public school. My children go to a catholic school. not by my choice though. There god parents are nuns so therefore they want them in a catholic school. I dont know how difficult it will be for my oldest to adjust in a public school for high school.

I also went to a Catholic elementary school and public high school. Your kid should do fine.. he/she may be in for a culture shock though. Both my SIL and I went to the same schools and were in school together. I think in Catholic school most of the kids come from the same backgrounds (basically) while in public school you'll tend to be around kids from all walks of life. In high school I went with kids who lived in mansions and some who lived in trailers. Also, my high school was more racially mixed which was different too. In elementary school we had only two black kids and no other races at all...no asian or latino. In high school is where I befriended more of a diverse group of people. Which is a good thing.

Well the elementry catholic school I there is only 4 blacks in the school they live in the same area of my girls Our old catholic school closed down that they all went to and they all go to the same school now and stayed friends. There in the same grades with both my children. Also there are asian and latino at there school. At this catholic school it is mixed and diverse there are different cultures there. and different area of neigbor hoods also. The area of the school is more rich high class where as the area I am in is poor low class. Its just for me my one child is ADHD and the classes are alot smaller in a catholic school. I am not sure how it will be in public.

Okay, I put this one aside to answer when I had a little more time to do so. I went to a privete first grade and then for a couple of years to a privete (Catholic) high school. In the States, property taxes pay for public schools, so there is no tuition to attend them, and it is required to go to school - even home schooling has to get tests to prove they are learning at least on grade level. Now, when I went to school, the public schools, because of the taxes, had some what better facilities then the privete ones did, but not by a whole lot. They did offer more courses, and is why I returned to public school after 2 years at the Catholic school, because I only had a few more corses I needed to graduate. I went to the privete first grade, because in Texas you could not start public school until you were 6 and I was only 5 when all my friends were already 6 and going into first. So I went to the privete school so I'd be in the same grade the next year. Now, remember I am 55 and segregation was just going away in the States when I was in school and the first time I ever went to classes with blacks was at the privete school, and also met and liked lots of hispanic people there too. Back in public school there was only 1 black student - the son of a teacher - and the hispanics kept to their own "kind" there. So the first time I ever went to a mixed race school was in privete school, and I didn't have a problem with it. In fact, I was once approched by another "white" student who asked why I was hanging out with those "Mexicans" - her words, not mine - I was just stunned. The race of my friends never mattered to me - just the interests - if we had simular interests, I was good with it.

Hi, Manya... I started out in a private school in elementary till 3rd grade then we had to transfer to a public school... I can say that I fared better in public schools because your skills are being recognized more there and encouraged rather than the private schools were I had felt the big gap between the rich kids to the poor ones. But in high school my parents tried their best to get me to a private school since I already passed the entrance examibation and got into the science section. Our Public HS has sooo many students that my parents were worried that we might not be able to study very well... so yeah, they made a good choice and the private school was near our home... ^_^ The HS private school got approved to be a university before we graduated because of its excellent standard in education... I guess it paid off lol. I passed the entrance exam on one of the prestigious, toughest state univ here in my country as a scholar... ^_^ and you're right manya about some private schools having better facilities...

I studied at a (Catholic) private school from pre-school to college (I got a loyalty award for this) but was able to do so because either my brother was helping me with the expenses, I got scholarships or I was working. My husband on the other hand studied in a public school from Kindergarten til College. 1 difference that public and private schools have will be the number of students per class (that's the case in our country). Like in elementary years, a class in public schools will have as much as 50 students while in a private school, around 20-25 only. And yes facilities is a factor for private schools especially those with really high tuition fees would be expected to have complete equipments and other facilities in their school, or else the parents would be thinking where their money is going. But it still boils down to the students. If the student would really be serious in his studies, it doesn't matter if he is from a public or private school. If he wants to learn, he will do everything to finish his studies and use the lessons he got from school to the real world. I came from a private school, my husband from a public school, but I don't think it matters now that we are a couple. We both are doing well in our careers and in taking care of our family and relating to our friends.

I went to private schools since pre school until college. Im sending my kids to private schools. There was a time that we tried a public school for one of my kids and though the teachers were very competent (teachers in public schools have to pass different liscensure examinations) the facilities were terrible. Only a handful of public schools in our country can boast of good facilities, and so I guess the private schools have the edge when it comes to this. We had to transfer him back to a private school. But in colleges or universities, it really doesn't matter if we go to a private or public university. Im talking about the situation in my country, of course.

How true, I fear. Is it just me, or is the overall quality of the education system in a freefall?

Since kindergarten I have studied in public school. Both elementary and high school, I've been into government school and I have finished a degree at a state university. I believed school isn't really the number 1 factor for success, it's always with the student. I knew a lot of friends who studied at private institution, but, they make no difference from me, I believed! But I do agree with you that it can't be denied that public school is left behind in terms of facilities. Then, creativity and initiative of the teacher and students would matter then!

I went to both. In elementary school I went to parochial school and I went to Public for high school. From my personal experience, I can tell you that public schools here HAVE to take every child. Where I live many of the public schools are terrible. In fact, most people send their children to private schools or parochial schools because the public schools are so poor. Of course, I realize that not all places are like here and many states public schools are very good even excellent. Unfortunately, I don't live in one of those places. Some private schools around here are very expensive (14,000 per year) and my step daughter had attended one of those schools and she even said that the kids there were snobby jerks. As for my time in high school, I really can't complain about it. It really wasn't that bad but a new principal had just came in and expelled a heck of a lot of students. So basically, the school was nearly empty for my first year or so. I do know one fact about private schools....its that more teachers are accredited in public school than in private schools. At least that is what I've understood. But private schools have more say so in who attends the school.

I was in private schools until highschool. Pre-highschool, I don't think I was ready for public schools. I'm still shocked today at how much junk our kids are subjected to - even at such a young age - by the public schooling system. If I had children, I wouldn't have them in public education until highschool either. Pre-highschool children are, usually, incredibly impressionable. I would rather have them in the hands of someone I know and trust - at a private school - rather than whatever the public schools can muster up. I mean no offense to those who work for public schools. Both of my parents are in public teaching. If the schools were filled with people like THEM, I would have no problem with public education. Unfortunately, this is reality - not fantasy world.

I was always in a public school and loved it because of the bigger amount of students, events, and activities. Also, the school fees are extremely lower too. Education wise, from what I heard, I would probably still say that private schools give a better education. Since we pay more for the school fee, we get teachers that are better. Even though our school is not that bad, I would probably still say a lot of private schools are still better than us.

In our place the Private school and public school concepts are very different. Mainly all good quality schools are Private school. They obvious take very large amount of money. But public schools are mainly government school where ther eare very nominal charges. But few are good in quality a swell.

I always went to a public school. From kindergarten to high school. My husband went to public school as well for most of his education. Though he did attend a private school for one school year, I think.

I've attended a private school both in my elementary and high school years. My mom has this idea that private school would provide me more opportunity to received quality teaching. Although, I personally believe that education depends on the student. If he is eager to learn, he would do everything to learn.

I didn't know how my parents afforded it but me and my brother used to study in a private school in elementary and highschool. I guess they went trhough a lot of financial hardships just to carry us through. The lessons were hard and advanced, moral values were always instilled as it is a catholic school run by nuns, simplicity and frugality were always stressed. We couldn't wear jewelries, or dye our hair, or use colorful accessories. Cellphones are banned within the campus. It was hard but at least I knew it molded me into the person that I am now.
