i saw a discussion a week ago about some typographical errors made by some mylotters or some wrong grammars..... and they are mentioned as if they made a huge mistake that is a matter of life and death... why can't we just let them be, thinking that some of us came from countries who is not that fluent in writing or speaking english! i usually bypass those wrong spellings or grammars because i know that the person does not come from an english speaking country, i usually proof read what i type first before posting.... and if i ever saw some errors on grammar and spelling, i visit that person's profile first and afterwards think whatever i'd like to think, but as much as possible, i wouldn't post here that i saw some errors on someone posted discussions, because i'm thinking just maybe, i would, one day post a discussion with so many errors too!, what i am saying is DO NOT DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT YOU WOULD NOT WANT THEM TO DO UNTO YOU... live and let live, if that's the way they wanted to post a discussion, let them be.... it wouldn't ruin your life if you'll just let them be. SMILE, mai

I'm definately one of those people who are constantly correcting grammer. Although its totally understandable if english is not your first language, and you have spelling/grammer mistakes. But seeing those little mistakes from people who speak english as a first language really bugs me for some reason. I'm trying not to correct people as much anymore, cause I'm pretty sure I get really annoying!

What if I were to point put that you spelled GRAMMAR wrong? Would it hurt your feelings? Now think about all the times you called someone out on their spelling and/or grammar. Cheryl

I'm definately [definitely] one of those people who are constantly correcting grammer [grammar]. Although its [it's] totally understandable if english [English] is not your first language, and you have spelling/grammer [grammar] mistakes. But seeing those little mistakes from people who speak english [English] as a first language really bugs me for some reason. I'm trying not to correct people as much anymore, cause [because] I'm pretty sure I get really annoying! Please do not take this as a criticism of your spelling and grammar, I am just pointing out that anyone can make mistakes. English seems to be a constant learning process and some of us are further along on that journey than others. If you spend all your time correcting the mistakes of others on an international board like myLot, you will be doing nothing else other than mistake correction and you will become very dull. I do not think anyone wants a dull captainmorgan.

right, we should not really point out some typos the others here on mylot has been posting because we too, can make a lot of mistakes, as they say nobody's perfect! our intentions of correcting them may be constructive but we can't be sure if the person that we are constructively criticizing is taking it the way we intent it to. This is some excellent advice here, and something a lot of people could learn to live by. We do have many people from all over the World in here, and I think we should encourage not discourage and then go from there. This should be a place to have Fun and meet others, and when people stick by the rules then that is what it can be for sure.

right! mylot should be a place where we can find new friends who share the same interests as we are. and for those who doesn't speak and write English well, it's a good place to practice and pick up some phrases that they can use in conversing with those from English speaking countries. smile!, mai

I have also observe that some where having typographical errors and incorrect grammars but I think it is fine as long as it is understandable and we should also take into consideration the country he/she came from.

I does not annoy me if the person is from a non English speaking country or if it is just slip or typos. However is does annoy me if the person is from an English speaking country, such as the USA, and every discussion and response is filled with bad spelling and grammar. This indicates to me that they are more interested in earning a penny and do not stop to think that some myLotters are trying to improve their knowledge of English and by their bad example are not helping them.

very well said.... and there are those who pretend to speak and write English fluently and still suck in spelling, and they even have the guts to point out somebody's mistakes.... why can't they just shut up and divert all their energies to making a better discussions and be nice to everyone else here. smile, mai

I have to say that spelling is not my strong point. LOL!! But I do my best and sometimes my thoughts come out faster than what my fingers can type. Sure I know that I'm going to have some mistakes in my discussions and some typos and grammer uh just forget it. We are here to have fun and talk, we are not publishing a book that is going to be looked at by scholars.. Or at least the last time I checked we weren't, were we? But my point is read, type, reply, and be merry.. Never go judging least you be judged yourself. Many people forget this. Have a nice one.

as long as you get your message across, it doesn't matter if you spelled it right or wrong, but since we all make mistakes why can't some people be understanding enought to those who spelled wrong... you're right, let's be merry in finding friends here and in learning a lot of things here, smile, mai

If that's really what happened, I know where you're coming from, maissj. That said, I also feel that those who did that may have done so because of their sincere belief that they could not let any grammatical and/or spelling errors simply pass. They may be sticklers for correct grammar and/or spelling that they truly feel the need to correct any error that they see, which mainly results from their OC behavior. Even when their acts could somewhat be understandable, they should have done it tactfully and with the intention of correcting (for the good of the corrected and the other readers), and not shaming. Stay positive and Happy myLotting!

If someone has to correct another for spelling or grammar than at least be polite enough to message them personally. It is a better judgement to help someone privately than to treat them badly in an open chat board. Maybe mylot could invest in a spell checker for posting.

I cannot stand it when people complain about that. I have some very intelligent friends who are dyslexic and cannot spell well and it also comes across as poor grammar. Many people on here do not have English as a first language, either. People who complain should put their energy into more important things. People can always learn better grammar and spelling, but some people will always be idiots (those who complain).

yeah i have noticed that on here that people come from different countries i didnt know that this place was world wide until i started really working on here and yes i think that the reason some people have trouble spelling is because that they are trying a new language they dont type or speak much in their home country so i agree with you why dont people back off of them.

People who do that are usually people who want to make themselves look big and clever and they point out faults of others. this is a forum it is not a classroom so unless someone specifically asks for their responses to be checked then just ignore it read it and move on. I am happy who I am so I do not need to find fault in others to make myself seem better than them. We all make mistakes and we all make grammatical errors and as for spelling, well its American English so when I type a lot of words appear incorrect when they aren't because I type in English but I don't care and nor should anyone else unless they have a hard time to understand the comments in which case just ask :)

you're right, we are not graded for each discussion that we post here, and as long as we are happy to be just who we are, we don't need to flaunt that we speak English well, we don't have to prove to others or to ourselves that we are better that everybody else here..so smile, mai

Lol! Well i hope you're not talking about my discussion "hence it is fine with all issues" because it talks about how online tranlators can make your paragraph a mess. English is not my primary language and i do make some mistakes most of the time but like you, i just shrug off wrong grammar for as long as i can understand what one is talking about. I guess that where common sense get into the picture.

I am from an english speaking country and I still don't have perfect grammar or spelling. I don't think it should matter how you write or spell as long as you get your point across and people understand what you are trying to say. My grammar has always been bad. I hated english class and don't care how I speak! Im not a professional in anything which is probably a good thing because they would expect me to talk with better grammar. I had a friend in high school that would always correct what I would say...It drove me nuts! I say leave people alone that don't speak or spell right. If you don't like it then don't read what they had to say.

first of, i didn't start this discussion just because i know a lot of people will react to it, it's nice though that many responded, but i started this discussion to see if there are others like me who doesn't like those who thinks they are the best of what they do, that they can just tell someone that she/he types with a lot of errors in grammar and spelling, as if it's a sin and that person's condemned.. as if that person's feeling wont be hurt. and i wanted to be heard, and those who hears should really listen, not just hear me, but listen. to be at least nice, we wouldn't know, maybe, that person we are belittling today will help us or do something nice to us. it wouldn't hurt to be nice and understanding don't you think? smile, mai

I think I got to agree with you there. As long as I understand what the message says, it's OK with me and I fully appreciate that many users here on myLot do not have English as their second language. I think they are doing really well. Much better than I could do if I was to try and write in their language. - Derek

I agree with you completely! We have so many international friends here on mylot and it's true that not everyone is fluent in the English language. But so what! This is a place to have some fun and make friends...discuss issues or topics that are of interest to us (no matter who we are or where we're from). Those who are critisizing others for bad grammar or spelling are simply being mean and rude. Just let it go, I say.

I know what you saying that when pointing a finger, some forget to look down and see the others pointing back at themselves. The only time that I would correct anyone's writing's is if they asked for that. Which has happened recently. Nothing wrong with constructive criticism if someone has asked for the help. If not Leave it alone, I am sure if you read what is there you can figure out what the subject is without having to make some remark on the gammar. I am from the US, still I respect those that have problems with English especially if it isn't their first language. I have made many friends online that are not from the States and have helped when asked. Some of us have fun with it and compare things.. Take care, God bless

Mistakes in typing and grammer are common. When thousands of persons are net working, in fairness, you cannot expect everybody fluent in english. If they can make a point that others can understand, it should be fair enough. Sometimes small mistakes just change the whole meaning. That situation needs to be avoided.
