Are you always hungry?

I am. There's never a moment of the day where I feel like I don't need to eat. This is part of why I can't lose weight, I constantly want to be eating something. I am making an effort to eat healthier foods when I feel this way, but it doesn't always work.
Keeping myself busy helps me not eat as much, and making sure I eat before I get too hungry... otherwise I'll never stop eating.
What do you do to try to stop yourself from eating too much? Do you have an over active appetite, a normal appetite, or an under achieving appetite?

Let me tell you it’s a HUGE relief for me to find more and more people like me around. I am a total glutton and I say it with pride. There was a time you know when I used to be ridiculed by others for always eating. It began with my mom of course, who was totally exasperated by my appetite and then in school I was caught stuffing into my mouth and made to stand outside in the corridor. College was better as I had the liberty to bunk classes and eat but office was/is really horrible. I mean most people are hypocrites you know…there are really few people who don’t enjoy food (my hubby being one, thank God) but the way they pretend as if food is not a priority at all…work is! Yet, they would not be the last one to grab up free treats…only they do not admit it like I do! And they make me feel so guilty about wanting to eat all day! I say…what’s wrong in that? I eat out of my own pocket and I love eating and I admit it freely…I have no pretence about food being the first and only addiction of my life (though I must say I myself become surprised as to where does all that go and how come some people are OK three or four hours after lunch while I feel hungry say about an hour later! Do you think it’s a disease?)
The only thing that can be done I guess is drink water before meal so that we eat small portions, but then most of the fun is gone then, isn’t it?

Yep, you got it about right. Eating is fun. We love the taste of food. We're hungry quickly because we've trained our bodies to constantly want to eat, so that we can enjoy the thousands of different flavors of foods constantly. There is nothing wrong with that... unless you're overweight. Which of course I am and always have been. Trying to stop eating all the time and eating whatever I want is rather difficult when I've been used to eating however I please my whole life.

I'm glad that someone else is the same as me. I wake up thinking about food and go to bed thinking about food. I can finish a meal and immediately start thinking about what I'm going to have for a snack. I've always been able to eat alot but my metabolism has changed and the weight is starting to creep on. I have convinced myself that this is hormonal since I am going thru the change. I try to drink water but that doesn't seem to fill me up one little bit. Even when I go for a walk or exercise food is still on my mind. I am thinking about trying some over the counter appetite suppresants to get back in the habit of just eating normally.

I find that I stay hungrier when I have time on my hands, or when I'm anxious about something. Generally if I can keep myself really busy, I can avoid the munchies! I have to be physically so busy that I can't stop for anything, or I'll still manager to find time for a snack.
If you hadn't said that you are trying to eat healthier, I would have wondered if your body was trying to get something it needed? If you are eating healthier then maybe it's not so awful that you're staying hungry. It's a little different from constantly eating twinkies and doritos, LOL.
If you haven't already, you may want to try upping your exercise. Not only does it counterbalance greater caloric intake, it also can suppress your appetite for a while after you have exercised.
Good luck!

I mostly get hungry when I'm bored. Then I start thinking about what I want to eat. I tend to go overboard on stuff that is really good because I might not have it again for awhile. Like there is this one dish that I make that is really good, but when reheated it isn't nearly as good. So when I make it I tend to over eat at supper because I want to get as much as I can while it is at it's best. I'm trying to break myself of that habit. I did weight watchers a few years ago and that worked for me using their points system. You could eat whatever you wanted as long as you didn't go over your points for the day. I still was hungry a lot for awhile but I got used to it. I'm trying to do it on my own with what I learned there but so far my will power isn't so strong.

Neither is mine! I'm just trying to do little bits at a time, like make healthier switches instead of going full blown dieting, you know. I switched to diet soda so I eliminated a bunch of calories there. I'm taking some vitamins, I'm eating a banana every morning and added a bunch of fiber to my diet. I'm also trying to join the YMCA so I'll get more excersize in. Other than that I'm still mostly eating whatever I want whenever I want to.

I didn't eat nearly as much when I smoked. I would mindlessly smoke all day long though. It's pretty bad when you have a lit ciggy in the ashtray and then you light another one... I can't remember how many thousands of times I did that.
But now that I'm not smoking.. on boring days when I'm not busy, I'm just non stop eating.

I have about three days per month where I feel like I am constantly hungry, I have had a hysterectomy but still have my ovaries and the time I am hungry is around the time I would have been due on so I put it down to that. Other than that I do not have much of an appetite at all really! After I had my third child I did used to be like that, constantly hungry and always eating and I put loads of weight on but since having my fourth child I have gone the opposite way and only seem to eat when my stomach really shouts me too.

I wish I could be like that. I've always had an over active appetite, but I do not have an over active metabolism. I've always been on the large side. It wasn't so bad back before I got married, because I was at least active then. I'm not as active anymore, so it's harder to lose the weight.

Yeah, I was constantly hungry as well, until I found out that my blood sugar was borderline stable and that i'm getting close to pre-diabetes, so I have to reduce my eating methods and started looking for solutions to back away from there. That's when I found out about fiber, so Ibought a load of high-fiber foods and reduced my meals to one plate. I still eat some bit of food, but I always eat fiber-based foods as well to feel full.

Hello katsmeow1213,
I love eating but I don't feel hungry all the times. I eat my regular meals and sometimes I snack too. I don't wait till I feel very hungry. When the time comes, I will have my meal. But, I don't really concerned with what kind of food that I eat. I just eat whatever I want. Diet is the last thing in my list -always want to do but always do it half way

I go through stages when I don' take much interest in food and can even forget to eat; I get like that when I'm writing! There are those times, and these are more frequent, where I focus on food a lot! I'm Italian and my family and I put a lot of emphasis on yummy food; we get together and all we seem to do is eat! Dieting is near on impossible especially with my mum's cooking which, as you can imagine is to die for and very fattening.
I tend to be an emotional eater, eat when I'm sad, eat when I'm happy, eat when I'm anxious, eat, eat, eat...

i can say i have an active appetite that i eat every 2 hours! no kidding but i'm 5' 102 lbs and 34 years old. i was 113 then! the technique i used is:
1) since i am hungry if i hadn't taken water i make it a point to abide by the 8 glasses of 200 ml water a day. problem is i have to drink often to achieve this. i started eating every 2 hours since i cannot have a drink of water without me washing any taste from my mouth.
2) however, it's either carbs or protein that i take alternately every 2 hours since deficient carbs means feeling tired and feeling hungry always while deficiency in protein means headaches for me.
3) i started going below the recommended amount of servings of each food i consume. those recommended servings are for growing children who would still grow tall. if one stops growing tall the one for sure that would grow is one's waistline. if you go by the recommended amount of servings then you'd look like most people, which unfortunately now, are almost all fat.
4) if you don't know the recommended amount of serving of a certain food it would be helpful to know that our stomach is the size of our fist. that's the only sac we are filling. if we think we've overloaded that sac that excess food would go to our waistline.

My stomach is never full, even after I eat til I am full, an hour later it's growling. Before I thought I ate a lot of food because I was always hungry, but lately, I have been working gaining muscle, and how I eat now is ridiculous. I don't eat any snack foods because they are a waste of time for me. Especially now that I am bigger and stronger, I have been going through so much food. The harder I work, the more I eat. Now, it has gotten to the point where I am eating in the middle of the night because my stomach is growling. I tried not to eat that late, but I wake up so hungry in the morning, but it doesn't matter now since I still wake up hungry. I guess it is the tradeoff for having a large powerful body is that it constantly needs fule and therefore develop a large never ending appetite. Even my grocery shopping has taken a hit. It use to cost me $100 for the week by myself, but I have been spending $150 and it only goes part of the week. I went from 4-5 meals a day to 8-9 because my stomach is loud when it growls and I feel tired if I don't eat. People always tell me that I eat like a horse and I reply that I have a horse a day for my appetite. But I like eating anyway, and haven't concerned too much about the weight gain because I am growing more muscle. For some reason, I love it when after I have been lifting weights I crave food like an animal. Maybe because I eat like one.

I am a contant grazer as well. I am just now getting to the point in my life where it shows. I used to be able to eat anything and not gain an ounce. Lately, I feel like a cow! I find that when I am bored and depressed, I eat more. And I eat really, really bad things, like candy and chocolate.
I am thinking about changing careers to a job that is more physically demanding. That way, I will be too busy to eat all day.

It seems like it but I need to start shriking my stomach. I did it before it was hard but once you get it done and stick to it the weight comes off pretty easy and I really didn't do that much exercise. You have to have alot of water to drink. As soon as you wake up drink a glass of water. Always keep a glass of water near you through out the day. Eat a little something for breakfast make sure you read labels. Then between the time you woke up and lunch eat a handfull of nuts unsalted is best and a glass of water. For lunch before you eat drink another glass of water. Again between lunch and dinner have another snack I use to eat some kind of fruit with a glass of water. For dinner drink a glass of water before you start eating then have small portions 1 protein 1 carb and 2 veggies. Its hard but if you stick to it you will lose weight and will find that your full since your drinking so much water. Something that would help me drink more water is add a lemon quarter to it. If you can drink it without sugar it would be better. This week is a bad week for me b/c my period makes me eat more then I should and easter candy is not helping. Good luck

Under active .. I NEVER feel hungry and wouldn't eat if someone wasn't always reminding me that I need to eat. I can't remember the last time that I ate because I was actually hungry...

I don't think you are truly hungry unless you have a medical condition. I think you have an eating habit when bored. I chew gum which helps a lot. just having something in my mouth takes care of the urge to eat. Also staying busy as you said helps me.

Yes, I'm always hungry. When I go to mall, I spend most of my money in buying foods. Actually, I'm a slim girl and I don't know why I haven't gained weight yet. I always eat a lot. My appetite always wants to eat.

Hi kats...I feel like I'm always grazing too. I try to have as much water as possible so that I don't eat constantly. I think too that there are just some days where we're hungrier than others.

I have a normal appetite. The fear of getting fat stops me from overeating. Plus I know my time at teh gym would be wasted if I ate too much. It's harde though becase I am a receptionist and eteranlly bored. I like a lot of fruits and there are ways to eat them so that they are just as good as anything else you might enjoy. It;s just about being smart really. And how much you want to stop yourself. Sometimes I don't, and that's okay too. Gum does help a lot byw.
