A free carrier bag

I went to my local supermarket and the cashier was giving every customer a free plastic bag. I told him I had my own shopping bags because it is better for the environment. I used to have a kitchen cupboard full of plastic bags. For the last year I have been trying to take jute bags to pack my shopping into. I have a couple of materials bags in my hand bag in case I forget my shopping bags. Do you take your own shopping bags with you to the supermarket? If so what type? What is the policy like, plastic or paper bags, free or a charge?

Yes, we use our jute bags whenever we go to the supermarket. Unfortunately using recyclable bags is not yet that popular in my country. Most people specially those purchasing from retails stores still use plastic bags and they charge them for free. Although the biggest retail store in my country initiated a program about using recyclable bags when consumers shop. And they have Wednesdays declared as green bag day, where consumers will pay for plastic bags that they will use for their purchases. The money collected for these would be used for their environmental programs. I think this is a good program. If only it can be implemented in the whole world, our world will be a much better place to live in.

I think it would help with keeping food costs down if they didn't continue to give plastic bags away. Some people use between eight and ten carrier bags per weekly shop, and that must amount to an awful lot of bags. I say, take your own bags and keep the prices down, people! lol. If they didn't give the bags away any more, then perhaps a few would start taking their own bags or using some of the boxes from the supermarket, before recycling them. Brightest Blessings.

They have introduced a charge on plastic bags. I know that using less plastic bags helps the environment plus it does not tax your pocket if you use bags of other material. Sometimes we use boxes to put our groceries in or have our bags made from cloth.

I just recently bought material bags. I try to remember to bring them with me.The store I shop at has plastic bags and the have just started charging 5 cents for them. I prefer the material bags because they are strong.

The paper and plastic bags are free. I stopped using them and I now use the tote bags you can buy in the store for a dollar each. I have several and I use them everywhere and for things other than shopping as well. I try to keep them in my car after I put away my groceries. Only on occassion I forget. I got my daughter hooked on them when I brought some food to her house a while back. She picked on me about the "old lady bag". I how handy they were and good for the environment. When I left, I left my bag there. She called me and I told her she could keep it. She later told me that she loved it.

Now most stores here charge you if you want a plastic bag so we take in our own bags. I have been using the cotton ones but have been finding that they rip pretty fast and I don't like them. I do have a couple of these bags that can be tucked into a pouch to put in your pocket or purse which I love cause I will never forget to bring them in that way. I have seen boxes at the grocery stores that I want to get because I think they will last longer than the cloth bags.

im an environmental manageress and its part of my job to help make the world a greener place ( IF I HAD A PENNY FOR EVERY TIME I SAID THAT LINE). Anyways i am glad to hear that there are others out there who care for the environment too. being pro active with bringing your own bio-degradable bags or shopping bags is a good way to help out. also think about planting trees and lovely flowers or even have a garden at your house. a little green goes a long way. cheers love.

We have been new policy that we should buy for the plastic bags instead of free of charge which I think it's beneficial to the environment. Sometimes I would take the shopping bag but most of the time I don't since you know, boys are lazy. lol. If I get so many things that my two hands are full of the things, I would buy the plastic bag. Anyway, we'd better not to use more plastic bags in our daily life for sake of next, next and next generation, or the people on earth. It's a way of protecting ourselves. lol

In the past, I used a lot of plastic bags when I went shopping. As time goes by, more and more bags pile up in my house. Except some were used as rubbish bag, I throw away most of them. According to a survey conducted by EU commercial organization, the use time of the one-time plastic bags used by consumers is 20 minutes, but they need more than 100 years for natural degradation. Because plastic bags are made by oil, every year it's a very big waste of energy. So I take shopping bag with me when I go to the supermarket, and the shopping bag is made by cloth, which is environment friendly. When I have to use the one-time bag, such as eating the street food, I will choose the paper bag firstly. I'm not a very noble man, and I just wanna contribute to the protection of the environment.

we dont have laws here against plastic bags, wherever you go, supermarket, groceries, department stores, wetmarkets, they all use plastic bags. public officials here talk about helping the environment, all those green, eco friendly things... but they are all just good at talking, it's what they do best - talk. i do have my own grocery bag (3). i use all those plastic bags as garbage bags. oh well if people that uses plastic bags are gonna be put in firing squad, ill be one of them.... lol you know, people will never really care if it's there and is widely used. if plastic is bad for the environment why are the manufacturers still making it? i mean the government should make a law about plastic not to be made. implement laws that plastic should not to be used anymore... that's the only time it's gonna stop. let's say out of 10 people only 1 dont use plastic, i think nothing will change in the environment, we're still doomed.

That goes against the trend. In Australia they engourage customers to bring their own bags, here in Thailand, they're talking about the damage plastic bags are doing to the environment, but like most things here, it's only talk.

I really appreciate your attitude to protect the environment. Here the supermarket will not offer the plastic bags for the customers. It is a rule to protect the environment and use less plastic bags. This is why I already get used to bring my own bag when I go shopping. I don't think it's very inconvenient for me. As long as our planet can become better, all is worth:) I love China

Some of our little coastal villages have gone plastic-bag-free - and others are thinking of implementing this. I must admit, I keep forgetting to take my re-usable green bags to the supermarket - but when I have plastic bags, I use them as bin liners. Some shops are trialling biodegradable plastic bags - but I'm not sure how effective this will be in the long term. I think we should all try a lot harder. There are many products over-packaged - I've bought biscuits which have an outer box, then a plastic tray inside containing the biscuits - and this, in turn, is encased in clear plastic. Far too much packaging, so I try to buy products which have used a more sensible approach.

I just let them put my items into the bags that they supply. I don't carry a pocket book so I know that I would forget to carry them when ever I would go shopping. Their about like a umbrella is, I don't never have it with me when I need it.
