putting down the dog! please help...

i think that i have reach my limit! i just couldn't take it anymore. on of our family dog always kills kittens. i can't remember how many that she has already killed but today she killed two. the mother cat tried to defend the little kitten but it was too late she already grab her body and step on her. it's like seeing wild lions at the Sarangeti plains grabbing their pray. it was so horrific! after i rescue the kitten from the hands of her predator, i watch her grasping for air before finally turning pale and stop breathing. her eyes turning dark blue from yellow and green. you can actually sense that the kitten is gone. it's like there is no soul left in there. i am very angry with the dog and i am planing to put her down for good... what do you think? is it a good idea to do so? we have law against animal cruelty in my country that is why i am hesitant. and do i have enough reasons to this to the dog?

What a shame you have to face such a dilemma. There's no going back with this dog and no amount of training is going to change things. If this dog would kill a kitten it would kill more than that.

Dogs are predators. We have to try to curb that with training. All dogs will kill in the right circumstances. So should all dogs be killed? NO. Cats are predators too. They kill mice & moles & squirrels all the time. Do we threaten to put them to sleep for doing it? NO.... so why the double standard?

While I believe you may eventually have to resort to putting the dog down, perhaps you could try something else to remedy the situation. They make muzzles that are safe and comfortable for the dog and get a trainer to help you. I'm going to pass this conversation by my daughter, she's a vet tech and deals with situations like this. She might have some suggestions for you.

I agree very much with you, uath13. In fact, they are all in a cycle.

So you favor cats over dogs & are going to punish your dog for doing what comes naturally. Most dogs would have attacked those kittens. Your anger is misdirected, look in the mirror. As the owner it was your responsibility to keep the animals separated so this doesn't happen. It was also your responsibility to train her properly. The one being cruel to animals is you. Is it right to punish the dog for your mistakes?

Farmers shoot rogue dogs all the time. Once they get a blood lust that's it. The dog is ruined. So what's she suppose to keep the dog separate from next, her kids?

There's a difference between wild dogs & pets & yes, if the dog was a threat to kids then she should. Dogs are carnivores - that means they eat meat. It's your responsibility to make sure they come to you to supply their diet & they don't get the opportunity to hunt.

Hello uath13 I think your opinion is quite right, but it is a bit straightforward. But I think it is so horrible to see this scene in real life, I know once a dog kills other animals, it always kills. And I think separation is the only way to keep animals peaceful.

Excuse me? Why is this dog in the same room with the kittens? You have to put the kittens in a separate room and close the door! This is your fault, and if I knew where you lived, I would send the ASPCA to your home and have you arrested for animal cruelty. It made me sick to read this! You are acting like this is not in your control!

It is only going to make the dog angrier to keep him tied up while the cats roam free. Put yourself in the dog's place. I think the best thing for all is to re-home the dog because it obviously isn't a good dog to have around cats. The other suggestion is to pay some money to have a skilled dog trainer come in. Does the dog kill full-grown cats or just kittens? If he kills just kittens, then you need to isolate the kittens until they are full-grown. But it's so unfair to tie up a dog all the time. You have to find another way, or send him to another home. Although I have to say that if he would kill kittens, I would be afraid to have human babies near him too.

i didn't put the dog and kittens in the same room... the dog is tied up near the back door. but the kittens roam freely in and out of the house. we tied that dog because she is the only dog we have that kills cats... so we tie her up. please read the our response that i have for those who comment before threatening me. i know that it need to be stop it but i need help and not your threat. i love the cat and the dog and i need to do something that i could help them both... bare in mind that it's a family dog and not just mine... the truth is i am the only person in our household that take this situation as a problem. i know what animal cruelty is... and i myself is against this. i love animals that is why i am trying very hard to give them a great home... a home that is safe for all of them. now if you please instead of mentioning that i can go to jail or worse, might as well as you give me some ideas to help our pets. this is why i post this discussion to ask help from you people...

if the dog is known to be vicious, and it sounds like he is, then it might move beyond killing cats to hurting children, far better to put him down before that happens

the roommate's dog had been getting out of hand, but we never had to worry about kittens, she loves them However, we've had to correct her behaviour about other things, like her going after Frankie and Rose before him. She's also nipped the other roommate, tho the time she bared her teeth with me, I gave her a kick in the teeth - not hard enough to break anything, but enough to hurt, she's never done it since. She also nipped a child, but since we have had a long history of her love of children, we guess that the hyperactive brat probably landed on Zoe's bad leg that prompted her to nip.

I think you and I are alone in this thinking. Of course it's the last option, but it is always a possibility.

I don't know which reasons you should have to put down your dog, but as what others said, you should keep your dog away from another animals to let her kill. I think she is used to kill, to teach her not to kill is what you should learn. I can't accept my dog kills other animals, but indeed it is dog's natural, so I have traind my dog being nice and calm.

ok that is so nice! great job there... how did you do it? how did you train your dog after killing many animals to be so calm? can you teach me the technique that you use? because i really need them...

I think once dogs kill, you can't stop them doing it again. The best way must be seperation.

I feel the dog is not in the wrong. It is just a dog, and its action is natural. What you can do is either train your dog to live with the cats, or separate the cats and the dog. Putting it down for its natural behaviour is sure cruel. Wonder if you love your dog...

Now I'm getting a little more of the picture. Luntian has a pack but isn't in the alpha role. There definitely need to be some research & training done here both for the dogs & especially the owner. I'd like to recommend she watch the show "Dog Whisperer". Caesar Milan is pretty good at getting the point across to the dog owners. She shouldn't stop there though. Read & read lots!

Look at it this way... If the dog will kill kittens like that what else might it kill? I have heard of dogs killing newborn babies. The dog might get bold enough to try that, who knows? I think you should get another dog. Put this one down and chalk it up to its being a menace to society.

ok i will do that if other suggestions here won't work... good thing we don't have a baby inside the house... i know what you mean and i fear that might happen to us... thank you very much for your time.

i think what you have to do is to try to separate the dog from the cat and kittens first before you put the dog down... if it doesn't work, then may be have a chat with the animal rescue organisation in your country and ask them for help... rather than putting the dog down, i think it is better to give it away to the people who really loves animals and will take care of it... take care and have a nice day...

HI, Dog and cat are usually not getting along but some are. There are many thing that you can do with these two. Try to separate the dog and the cat if you want to keep the dog. Some dog thought kitten are a toy, so why dont you keep the dog outside and the cat inside. putting the dog to sleep is very pity, if I am getting enough with the dog then I just give him to anyone that I know or one of your family who lives in different house. Think about it before you do something else, it might not too late to give him another chance.

the dogs are the ones inside the house... but the kittens are the one outside. but the other (problem) dog is outside. the cats love to be outside, they have time to play with other (neighbors) cats. and we can't let them in for they usually make a mess unlike the dogs. we chain the (problem) dog outside for she is not comfortable inside. well we tried to make her sleep inside the house but she just can't sleep. most of the time if she is inside she is restless... i don't know what type of training i will need to control the dog.

Well, dogs and cats dun go together and i thought that's understood?? BUt most families wont have both cats and dogs for pets as things u have mentioned will always happen.. No matter how well trained a dog is, they will not lose their basic instinct and thus that's the way they react whenever they see cats.. So i dun quite agree with u on putting the dog down, just because it killed some kittens?? How about u re-locating the cats elsewhere and isn't that a better option??
• Philippines
30 Apr 09
i don't know where to relocate the cats... we do need some cats for there are pest inside the house. we have three cats, one male and two females... may be i will cage one of them, the cats or the disturb dog... the other dogs are ok... they don't kill the cats... may be will just something that would separate them if training won't work.

We had this problem a couple of years ago. My uncle lived near us. He had this beautiful large dog. She mostly would kill cats, but once a turtle. So my uncle gave her away. He didn't put her down for such a thing but found a different owner who could perhaps get her away from stray cats.

thank you but i will try to ask them to give the dog away... i don't know what will happen but the debate is on inside the house hold now.

My 5 dogs are just so funny with my only cat. They play all the day and they are so close to each other. It all depends on how you have brought up them. I have since their birth, put them together and now they are so well. So in your case, your dog seems to hate cats at its best, all you got to do is to seperate them before one more life is gone.

maybe you should teach your dog not killin cats, or maybe you should not release that dog at front yard, so your dog will not meet a cat. If you can do that..you should sell your dog
• Philippines

she is the only dog that is chain... we can't release her for she might chase the cats, including the neighbors... do you have any idea how to train a dog like her... please have time to read my other replies. thank you! i hope that you can help me.

If you can´t have the cats separate from the dog, couldn´t you take the dog to a place where he will find other family? It is evident that you are more a cat lover than a dog lover. If not, you would have found a way of disposing of the dog without killing him. I am always amazed at a house where they keep cats and dogs: the don´t like each other so it requires a lot of training if they are to tolerate each other. I can´t think of any reson to kill one´s own dog except if he has a contagious illness or is in a lot of pain.

It's not the dog that its the problem but its owner. I don't want to criticise you but dogs are animals and don't have reason as human beings do. They behave according to their instinct. It is up to us to train them and avoid unacceptable behavoiur such as killing cats. It s your duty to prevent him from having access to cats. If you are unable to do so it is better to send him to a dog shelter but I am against your decision of putting him down

You can give it away to a local blue cross. You can complain about it's aggressiveness and people will surely take it away on grounds of public safety. or you can spread a rumor that it's infected with swine flu. It'll be gone before you know it . Kittens are so cute, but looks like it's in their nature of these animals to be enemies and such. So we can't really do anything. bourne

I normally would not say to put down an animal unless it is very sick, however, it sounds like you need to with your dog. If the dog is killing kittens, who is to say that it may not attack an innocent child or yourself? It is hard, but keeping others around you safe i more important right now.

i think you must do something with the dog. i think you can talk to PET or animal control organizations in your town.
