You've been hearing and reading about a possible "pandemic" for the past few days and then your child comes home feeling sick.
I'm not a person who panics. I never have been. I know he's fine and it's not a big deal, but when I've been hearing about nothing but "swine flu" all day long for the past few days and my son is suddenly, not feeling good, it really is a bit unsettling.

Miamilady, there is an unconfirmed case in central Florida, along with a lot of back tracking and denial because Disney is involved. Samples were sent to the CDC so that says something. Check out this link:

If it's in Central Florida it could very well be in Miami, too, so please don't hesitate to take your son to the doctor if you even slightly suspect he has it. Good luck.

Thanks. I actually just came back from searching swine flu, florida and came across that story too. Not the same site, but the same case.
He has a fever and is sleeping. Other than that he seems okay. I'll keep a close eye on him tonight and call his doctor in the morning.

geez. they are talking about miami childrens hospital having an influx of patients and they are adding staff. It does say that parents who's children have any sign of illness are bringing their kids in. So, I think some are overreacting, but of course I don't want to underreact either.

Your son will be in my prayers, miamilady. I also heard that face masks are flying off the shelves down here, mostly because people are sending them to family and friends up north.

Take it easy. Most likely it is not the swine flu. This story has been aired so much that the media seems to have people in a panic. In places where healthcare is poor or people do something that would put them in danger, of course beware. Yes the WHO has said a pandemic is very possible. Most of the time if we know our families and who we are with there should be very little problem. Many schools are curtaining activities and I guess so are others. The power of suggestion is great. Remember how a movie could scare you? You know your son better than anyone. You know when he is really sick or when he is not. Watch and be aware of how he acts. Relax.

"schools are curtaining activities" I know! I thought I saw something on the news about hat last night, but I didn't see the whole story. Were they closing down schools in California or just cutting out extra curricular activities?
My daughter is in the middle of Reginal championships in softball...it's a big deal for her, I hope they don't decide to stop letting them play...
I think the state championships is in central florida. there was a story about the possiblity of there being a case there. i'm not sure how this will affect things.

So far the game for tonight is still on. I'm glad because she is really "psyched".
The doctor believes that my son has a simple stomach virus, but told me that if anything changes (ie: more respitory symptoms) to bring him back.

I absoutly know the feeling! My daughter and I were in Orlando Florida last week and there is now a confirmed case there. My daughter hasn't been feeling good so I have basically been freaking out. If I had insurance we would be on our way to the doctor right now but since I don't its to the health department to sit and wait hours to maybe get in. I'm usually not the panic type either but with all thats being said about this swine flu and the fact that they don't actully have enough vaccination has me worried. I keep telling myself she is fine and its just a little cold but in the back of my mind I'm worried sick.
Hope all goes well for you and I hope your son feels better soon.

My mom stopped by the health department for me and was able to make an appointment. Its for tomorrow. and its a general between these hours appointment but better then sitting there all day. I do have to say my daughter got some color back today and isn't so stuffy but I'm still taking her.
Hopefully all works out and its just a cold from going to the "monkey playhouse" last week. (Monkey playhouse is an indoor playground that I'm sure is FULL of germs)

" My daughter and I were in Orlando Florida last week and there is now a confirmed case there. My daughter hasn't been feeling good so I have basically been freaking out. "
It's confirmed now? I hadn't seen the update on that...
Try NOt to freak out !:-) I was more concerned last night, but I called the pediatrician. (i'm lucky enough to have insurance) they gave us an appointment for 4:30 pm. I was a little disappointed that the appointment is for so late, but my son seems to be doing okay for the moment. He vomited a bit this morning and had a temperature, but now he seems to be acting pretty well okay. He's still sick but he's awake and semi-active. He's reading a magazine now.
It's good to play it safe and get checked out, but try to be calm about it. Sometimes when we're scared our kids sense it and it rubs of on them.
My son has anxiety issues, so I have to be really careful about not overreacting to stuff. Fortunately, I usually am able to stay calm in most situations.

Just watch for the fever, that seems to be the first major symptom of this terrible flu that is different from usual flu. Make sure your child washes their hands before and after eating and if a cough starts they need to cover their mouths with arms not hands. If you child is sick at all I would keep them home. It's just so better to be safe than sorry.

I kept him home today. He does have a fever and vomiting, but he's doing better now than he was doing this morning. He's not lethargic. He's up and talking to me and watching Tv. I did call the pediatrician. We have a 4:30 appt. just to be safe.

Good Morning, Miami
How's your son doing? I feel your pain; my son has been sick for 4 days now and with confirmed cases in MA, I'm unsettled too! My guy has all the symptoms of the flu, including very high fever (highest so far 102.7) I took him to the pedi yesterday and was told it's propably just a viral bug... Follow up tomorrow if no improvement for further testing. My pedi is very laid back too and almost never gives meds... But his lungs were clear and his ears were dry, so I have to have faith that he'll get over it.
I tend to over react too, esp. when it comes to my baby... but it's hard not to worry when this sh*t is popping up EVERYWHERE! And the officials aren't being very honest about what's going on...
I hope your son is feeling better, let us know how he's doing!

He has a fever. Vomited a little bit this morning, but he's doing better now. I called the pediatrician and they gave me a 4:30 appointment. Thank goodness he's not feeling TOO horrible, or I might feel more anxious. We're okay though.
Thanks for the reply!

He had chicken nuggets (don't go there). I was then scolded my the pediatricians wife for letting him eat "fried food" while he was sick. Heck, I was just relieved that the kid had is appetite back! I thought it was a good sign!
It seems like what he has is a simple stomach virus.

Good Morning, Miami, I'm happy to hear your little one is doing okay. We had a rough day yesterday too, but we had an appetite too. He pretty much stayed on the couch all day and watched tv... Trying to keep a 3 1/2 YO down isn't easy! LOL
We had two moments of "sometin in my mouff" and he did vomit a little but managed to keep toast down... We DID go there and had nuggets for dinner - it's one of the few things that he will eat!
I'm calling the pedi again this morning, because last night he woke up and asked for a sticker to make it feel better and when I asked "where?" he pointed to his ear! ARG!! First time ever he's indicated that his ears hurt...
OH and guess what??!! NOW mommy is feeling like a bag of dirt! : (
Good luck today!

I know for me I'm constantly checking the updates about what states are actually seeing cases. For me - I'm in college so therefore if one person gets it here everyone seems to get it. Stuff like this happens every year with the flu and my immune system isn't the best so therefore I always end up getting it. Plus at this point, I'm actually sick so therefore if it hits, even though our bodies can sometime try to fight it - I don't know how well it would be. But I'm not worried - but I probably will be if it hits Virginia.

There are six probable cases in Maryland and you already know about the ones in Ohio I'm sure, so you should be taking precautions now. If you're not already taking vitamin C, start taking it now to give your immune system a boost. Wash your hands often and keep them away from your mouth, nose or eyes unless they're clean. Get hand sanitizer and use it throughout the day while you're out and about.

Thank you for letting me know about the cases in Maryland - that I actually hadn't heard of so I wasn't really worried but now I guess I probably should since there are a ton of students at my school that live in Maryland and if any of them go home, then it is very likely for them to bring it down here.
But yes, I probably will go out and start taking Vitamin C because thats the last thing I need at this moment.

I know what you mean...I don't panic much either but with CJ being Autistic and all it's hard to know for sure if they make him wash his hands at school. I really rather doubt it, so I make sure he washes at home several times. I just pray that this'll all be over soon before to many others get sick or die. It's ridiculous...

Yes, the media certainly does get to us, but I keep thinking back to the other big scares. The avian flu and before that the red flu and Hong Kong flu, and then there has been a swine flu way back in the 70s I think it was. Then AIDS were going to kill us all and then BSJ... It seems like there's been a lot crying wolf to me, so it's best not to become complacent and just think it is another false scare, but I'm certainly not going to allow myself to get into a panic about it. - Derek

There have been some scares, yes, this is the first time one of my children has been sick while one of these scares is going around!
I'm not in a panic though. I'm playing it safe (called his doctor) but I'm not panicking. He actually seems to be doing pretty well at the moment.

yeah,I could understand why you feel unsettling these days, now people all over the world know the Swine flu,it's pandemic and spread a little quickly, but we needn't wo worry about that, because people infected are just a minority of us,take you sun to see a doctor and take some medicine.people get sick everyday,it's a normal thing.don't worry about that.

I live in WA state and yesterday was the first confirmed cases here. So, it has hit all corners of the states at this point.
But my sis and her husband just got over a regular flu a couple weeks ago and it was a REALLY bad one. Not the respritory, just the stomach flu. So, your son may very well have a touch of a regular old bug. The regular flu season is still lingering.
I would suggest you be careful if the Dr. recommends Tami-flu. I just read a bit that said it was taken off the shelves in Japan because of the reaction that children had to it. I would of pasted the info. here but I haven't been on here long enough to have that right. But the address for the information is www.Mercola.com if anyone wants to check it out.

I'm a day late but I hope your son is doing better and he's not sick from anything serious. I hate when kids get sick!!! I think that's one of the worse feelings I have felt since becoming a parent. You feel helpless at times and only wish you could take whatever they had and give it to yourself knowing that they will be okay.
I would say if it gets any worse not to hesitate with taking him to the doctor. Just as a precaution. It would settle you some and atleast you would know how to go about treating it... Hope the little guy feels better soon!

So far it's good news. Looks like a simple stomach virus. I just didn't want to UNDERrreact either.
Let me tell you though...people are nervous! I had some plans yesterday that I had to reschedule because my son was sick...when I mentioned him being sick, EVERYONE that I spoked to asked if it was swine flu.

i actually read on the cdc website that even if u do get it...it's totally treatable at home...just treat it as if it were any other flu with rest. even if someone has to be hospitalized they do have a couple antibodies that have been working against it so i wouldn't be too worried about it. i'm sure ur son just has the normal flu since flu season isn't over yet.

My son came home with a small cough. I decided to pump him full of vitamin c and see if it improves. He has seasonal alergies and so I am trying to keep an open mind about it all. They said on TV that you should get to a doctor at first sign, but is a small cough really a sign. Its hard to say. It is really unsettling.

Yes, the "pandemic" naturally is a cause of concern for everybody. I posed a question in this respect for possible precautions. One of our myLot friends "Celtricogue (310)" has given a very nice response to such concern. Please go through it and you will have a soothing effect to your worries.

It sure can start your mind racing. I fully understand. I think I would go to the same place in my mind if that happened to my daughter or grand kids. It is all pretty scarey. This is when it is easy to fall for the shots they want to so readily to give everyone too. We have to stay relatively nuetral and be proactive until we have all the facts in.

It is unsettling. My son jusdt told me earlier that one of his friend's parents is really sick and the doctors have given her a test to see if she has swine flu. That is bothersome to me because if she does, her son could easily carry it without ever knowing, and pass it on to kids in my son's school.
I am not normally a worrier when it comes to illnesses, but the thought that it could be that close toi home for us is also a bit unsettling.
I think that we all just need to take precautions. Most importantly, wash our hands often.

There is no need to panic, from what I understand as long as you catch the flu early enough it is easy to treat. I don't think you should be panicking simply because it is so early in his sickness and as most everyone else is saying, it's probably nothing. I have heard on NPR that you should not self-medicate because it can make things worse, so you do have a reason for concern. If I were you, I would get him tested for swine flu and see if your doctor suggests he go on antibiotics (not sure how long the testing takes). Better safe than sorry, right?
