At our house, we decided not to have a television in the dining room so we would not be tempted to have it on instead of telling each other what had we done during the day. It was very important for our family as the dining hour was the only time that we could be sure to be together. How about you? Do you watch TV while you have diner? Do you talk to each other during diner? Share

Hi marguicha, We live in the country and I was from the city and even after 35 years I still have to have noise around and even more so now that the kids are all grown and out of the house.
It is just my husband and I and we have our 13 year old grandaughter who lives with us.
Of course we do not have a TV in the dining room but it is i the living room right off of the dinig room. You can't see it to watch it but you can hear it.
My grandaughter always turns on the stuff they call music (sorry young crowd) but I just don't understand it. Sounds to me like just a bunch of yelling and screaming and I am really not all that old....only 53.
We do try and talk as much as we can, when we can get on the same shedule, usually weekends we catch up on everything that has happened during the week or may be coming up the next week.
With chores to do and school and work there is not alot of time during the week to do much of anything only what needs done.
^j^......

Yes, friend, music has changed. But I imagine that it´s a generation gap. My mother couldn´t understand my rock music and how I danced to it alone. She thought I was crazy. Now I listen to the music my granchildren play (holler) and I want to yell "STOP IT". Besides, they will all end deaf, electronics of my time could not be so noisy.
I know what you mean by having to catch up. Life has a fast pace at a certain time of our lives.

Great topic of discussion! When I am at home, either at my Mom or my Dads (they're divorced), the t.v. is always on.
It drives me nuts and my dog! She dislikes t.v. a lot!
We do tend to still have short spurts of discussions, in between the hot topics blaring from the news being broadcast at that time.
I agree that during the family dinner time, it is a great opportunity to come together and discuss, over dinner what has all gone on during the day. It is fun, informative and bonding.
Yet when I am at my place and I live alone, I usually do have the t.v on during dinner as well but very low volume so I can still cat ch the news hour.
On the week ends I tend to leave the t.v. off and prefer it that way.
T.V. bothers me overall. It is often far too loud, during commercials and annoying to say the least.

Thanks for your response. I´m glad that the younger generation sometimes learns the importance of talking to each other or to think in silence.

we often take dinner while watching tv. instead of talking about family matters, we talk about what's in tv. you're right it's supposed to be a family talk time.

For us as a family it was very important as for a long time we didn´t have much time to do it except then. Everybody in the house had diferent activities so diner was the only moment to bond (and fight also)

We never have anything on during dinner. We all sit around the table and talk about our day. I think it is important to make sure that we do that as a family. Sometimes we have to not do this because of the schedules but if we are all home we all sit together without any electronics on. We don't even answer the phone. It is a good thing to do.

We always did that when my hubby was alive and the girls lived with us. It was a very special moment of the day. We told each other our adventures, the kids asked permision for different activities, we planned the weekends, etc.

Sometimes I put the tv on while my boyfriend and I eat dinner, but for the most part I like to have dinner early, while it is still light outside. I turn off all the lights and light a candle and we have a nice quiet meal. It conserves energy and helps us save on the electric bill. We're saving about 15 hours of electricity a month by having our candle light dinners!
I am not opposed to having the television on, though. Sometimes we have the tv on. I guess it just depends on what kind of day it was!

I like the dinner by candlelight idea! It sound SO romantic even if it´s just an intelligent way of saving energy

Well, this one goes a long way. Actually, during the dinner time, my mothers favorite show is aired on the television. So there is no alternative to have dinner in the living room with the TV on. She works so hard for family so got to give her space too. And then i have notice this thing that when the TV is off, we dont eat that much. But when its on, we never know how much we ate while were busy watching some show. It really makes a difference.

Hi,
TV is a default machine which runs all time someone is awake in my home. We have tried a lot keeping it quiet but all failed. I feel it is a part in my family. Without TV, i feel i lost something.
Cheers,

It would be nice to have the TV off while having dinner so that we can have good quality time. But when we have tried that my kids always start fighting.
These days the TV goes on as soon as my husband walks through the door from work. If it is not the TV, it is always the radio during the day.
If he is home during the day, he watches a soap on TV which I don't really like.
So really the answer to your question, is yes, we do have the tv on while we are having dinner.

Yes we have TV where we have our dinner.
But we also talk about different things that we experience throughout the day.
But mostly I would prefer to turn off sometimes because if someone changes channel and starts a program that I don't want to watch then its really irritating.

yes.
I am used to leaving the TV on while having dinner. In most cases, I watch some entertainment program.
Moreover, my parents and I always chat with each other at dinner time. We share the recent trifles that have happened around us or current events which concern us.
I think that dinner time is a valuable time for the family to enchance communication and intimacy.
