People are not following the directions of covering there mouths when coughing

United States

I work with the public and yesterday all the people that came in where coughing and sneezing. Nobody that came in covered there mouth. They kept touching there noses and had sick kids with them. These are the only three people couples that came in to my job. One of them insisted on getting up in my face and I kept trying to back away. Why are people not being more cautious with this swine flu outbreak. Why cant people be curtious of others and cover there mouth?

Is it all something to do with respect, or rather with the lack of it? Everyone nowadays seems to think 'it can't happen to me' whatever it concerns and everyone thinks about themselves. Everyone wants to be first in line, jumping the queue and no time for others that go slower. Makes you wonder if this whole thing has occurred as some sort of punishment to make people realise what is lacking in our society today.

Exactly, I would consider this a lack of respect for others.

People are going to be people and they are going to do as they please. That is why this flu is going to spread like it is. People just do not think..or care anymore. It is such a shame that when some one is sick, that they cant just stay home, and do what is right.

that is because they really do not care about other people or they would be more cautious.

they were never taught manners when they were kids. u have to teach your children things like that . if u don't they want learn & it will carry through to adulthood just like these people were in your office.

Ask your boss if you can wear a mask. If people are going to be that inconsiderate you should be able to protect yourself and your family.

Thats very annoying. Ever since the news of the outbreak I have been extra careful when out and about. I would be really irritated if I was being surrounded by people like that even if there wasn't a flu outbreak at the moment but the fact that there is just shows how silly and uneductated these people are.

You are right. People need to consider others when they sneeze or cough so they do not spread germs around; especially now that there is a heightened fear of swine flu. I noticed here in this city people don't really care when people sneeze or cough without covering their mouth. I see it on public transport and other places. I guess people are not scared of the swine flu. And may be they shouldn't be because I heard some expert say it is not really that different from the ordinary flu. It is the media and politicians that make it seem so dangerous. Whatever it is, I think people should always cover their mouth when they sneeze; swine flu or no swine flu.

I feel strange after reading your story and I feel bad because people were inconsiderate of you and of others too. I wish I was there so I could have instructed them to cover their mouth if they were coughing and sneezing. It is not only for the reason of the swine flu outbreak but also as a sign of respect and being considerate to other that we should always practice proper ethics and manners outside and in everywhere we are. I hate those kind of people because they are do not care to others and they do not worry spreading their viruses. I wish everybody should be careful and be cautious with their acts especially if it involves sneezing and coughing. I would rather be in a group where everybody has a mask on their face than talking to people who do not care with their mouths.

Hi moneymommy...I hate this. NO matter what is happening in the world at the moment - swine flu or not - you can still pass germs by coughing and sneezing. I don't think that people are courteous of others and need to be in order to stem the passing of illness. I know people who carry wipes with them everywhere and won't touch shopping carts or doorknobs without wiping them off first. It may seem a bit crazy but who wants to be sick?

I often meet such people in the daily life. They just do not think of others. When we get sick, we really need to think about the other people. Especially for now, the flu disease is dangerous to us. Many people suffer from it. When we are sick, we can stay at home and have a good rest.

1. Apathy 2. Ignorance 3. Lack of respect Many people do not know that when they cough or sneeze that it's actually better to do so by placing the mid sleeve (or some other part) or their shirt over their face or to use a handkerchief (some people are simply too embarrassed or "modern" to be seen in public using one!). When most people cough or sneeze into their hands, they neither wash nor sanitize their hands immediately afterward, and thus end up spreading their particles everywhere else. As for people getting up into my face, if someone's brat wouldn't get out of it when I asked, I most certainly would be letting the parent know, and idk if I'd be so nice about it. Where I live, disrespect and apathy are so common place that most people don't even use a please or thank you.

Whatever you do don't cough into your hands! Cough or sneeze into your elbow it covers more area and then your hands are'nt instantly infected. Wash your hands regularly, especially after using public common spaces. If you are really worried about it avoid, hospitals, taking flights, going to the mall, concerts, etc... anywhere there is alot of people.
