Books: Used, New, or Library

Where do you get your books? Do you prefer to get brand new books or browse the used book store? Do you use the library? I love used book stores, it's cheaper than buying them new, and I can find rarer books that way too. Sometimes I can find books in German for my husband, and the owners of my local used bookstore are very friendly. I like libraries too, but the one close to where I live has a very small selection.

I LOVE books, but ya know, I like having my own personal library o.o it feels nice =P although I don't mind letting people borrow some of my books, it's better than leaving them to be only read once by one person. I think I'd like going to a used books store, I definitely would find more -and hopefully rarer- books than I'd find in a normal bookstore, but I am yet to hear about one such store around here -w- I'd be surprised if it actually exists. And the libraries I've been to don't exactly hold the best of collections, they're a lot more suitable for students rather than avid readers

My husband likes having his own personal library, though he almost never rereads books. He does loan them out, but always wants them returned. I just like having a book to read and then return, trade, or give away. Most books I know I won't reread so I'd rather save the space. I do keep reference books and copies of my favorites that I do reread every couple years.

sounds quite similar =P I'm not the type that rereads stuff, because when I read or watch something or whatever, everything gets imprinted in my head and it doesn't disappear not even after years, so I really don't have any need to reread things. But ya know, I kinda get this emotional attachment to the books I read, and your husband probably feels the same way, it is why I always demand the return of the books I loan someone and in perfect condition =P and it feels kinda nice seeing your books lined up and stuff, whether you've read them already or they're still waiting in line =]

Hello celestemichelle, well I love to browse through second-hand book shops. I grew up in Dublin, Ireland and I used to go to the second-hand book and record shops every Saturday. Nowadays I live in Germany and I buy and sell books over the internet, although I still have fun going to the second-hand and charity shops whenever I am back in Dublin. I used to find great bargains there, but a lot of the old shops went out of business as the city became too expensive. Maybe the current downturn will mean that more secondhand shops will open, which would be a big positive. Have a great weekend. Umart

I love checking out used book stores in different towns, it's always surprising what you'll find. We just had a new second-hand shop open near me, but they don't have any books. :(

They don't have any books!? How awful, but I know the feeling. All the charity shops in Dublin sell books as well as clothes, but in Germany they only sell clothes. There the people serving sometimes look at me as if I have two heads. I think I would like to open up my own second-hand book shop. I think it would be a nice lifestyle. All the best.

Honestly, I love bookstores, both new and used. If I find a book I really love, I want to keep it so going to the library is sometimes counter productive, because if I find a book I really like, I'm apt to go looking for it to own.

There's been a few times that I bought a book at a used bookstore after I checked it out from the library, and just loved it.

Reading books had been one of my favorite hobbies. During my younger years, i had read many kind of books. I usually didn't buy my books, because it's quite expensive in my country. What i do is, i will go to my local library to borrow books. Each book, i can borrowed for 2 weeks. When i got a book that i liked to read all the time, i will photocopy it and kept it in my home library. That way, i had saved a lot of money but still i am able to gain a lot of knowledge..

I like both new and used book stores. I find if I look both places I find more, lately I have been getting more at Amazon because of the cost of gas. On Amazon I get both used and new. I do like going to the actual store better, I like to touch and see the books before I purchase. Sigh

Sometimes I buy new books from Amazon, but I almost never buy their used books, unless it's a really good deal on an expensive book, since the shipping cost brings up the price to almost what a paperback costs new.

I love reading books. And I always buy new books. We have several thousand books in our personal library. All of my family members are fond of books and they believe in buying original, not used, whatever the cost is.

We belonged to the Readers Digest book club and got several classics there, but my husband discontinued it (and I was so looking forward to getting War and Peace.) I also belonged to a paper book book club and got a few books from there, I got some as gifts, and I did pick some up second hand. There is no library near where we are, and the one that is over a mile away has weird hours. I do not like going to the library, because when I get a book I prefer to keep it. I will read it someday. I also have some audio books, so I get them at various places. I prefer them new or from second hand if they are not marked and are in good condition. If the book is up to date, I prefer to get them new, but if it is classics and it is not in small print, from the second hand store.

I usually read books very fast, so the library isn't a problem for me, but I got tired of not finding the books I wanted. Even some classics weren't there. I don't usually like audio books, I guess I just like the feel and smell of real books. Occasionally I'll buy a book new, because I can't wait to read it.

I like books anyway I can get them. LOL! I love used books stores thou as there are normally so many different ones. I also like the discount ones at Barnes and Nobles, along with all the other ones but I can only afford the discount ones. LOL! Even now I cant afford any thou. Anyways, I dont go to our library as I have so many at home to read that I dont need more. Of course if I go to a yard sale or anything that doesnt stop me from looking or buying if I find one that I find interesting for under 50 cents or so. I think used is better thou as in a way it is recycling and that is always a good thing.

I hadn't thought about looking for books at yard sales. That's a good idea, especially because there are a lot of yard sales here in the summer.

I like to buy books new when I can, mostly I do it when I've earned enough through gift cards from some of the sites I belong too. I do love to go to a good used book store. It's cheaper and usually they have a really good selection of books that are in great condition. I would use the library more if the one in my town was bigger. It's okay but the waiting lists for the new releases or best sellers tends to be really long and I'm a bit impatient sometimes.

In my hometown the library was really good. There were only 2 in the county, so they were both pretty big, but where I live now, there are 5-6 libraries in town, but they're all very small so I get annoyed with the waiting lists, or having to request the books from other libraries.

I have a very good library where I live and a new one is about to open so if I really want a specific book I go there. My wife and I have found that the Salvation Army stores and some other resale shops also have a good selection of used books very cheap (some are like new). I have a fairly large library in my home as I like to read some books several times. The only books a buy new anymore are reference books and I look for the best prices on-line. Happy reading!

I miss having a good library. I'm moving to a larger city in a couple months, so I'm hoping that there will be a good library near us. We have two tall shelves of books at home, and a wooden trunk full of them. About 1/4 of them are mine, and the rest are my husbands. He can't stand to get rid of books, even to donate them to the Salvation Army or the Library Book Sale. There are very few books that I re-read. When I was in school, there was one book I checked out from the library and read 3 times before I finally bought a copy to keep.

If I buy books, they are usually for reference, for example Dummies books and Dictionaries. These books I usually purchase new in Waterstones or Barnes & Noble. Any other books like novels I would borrow from the library, as I usually only read them once. However, I have purchased the 7th Potter book as I was in this whole Harry Potter craze last year.

Yeah, sometimes you just can't wait for a book to hit the library or used book store shelves.

I usually buy second hand books at used bookstores as the new books in Philippines are very expensive. Many rare books are available at used bookstore. You know the cheaper books I ever buy is $1-2 a book compared to the new one which is an average of $20 per book. I wish there is a good library here in our country so I can spend my free time reading at the library without paying anything. But we don't have. =(

Wow, that is a big difference. in the US, a lot of used books are only 1/2 the 'new' price. Though sometimes books they get too much of are $1 or even less.

I am into recycling and don't like things to be 'made' for me. That's why I enjoy used books more, because I don't need to feel bad to buy them. Library books are also great. If I want to read a book, but don't want to own it (my room is quite small so I don't have a lot of space for my stuff). Used book stores are so interesting. You never know what you might find. And they're very cheap too!

I agree! And every used book store is so different. Once in Montana, I found one with shelves of books in Swedish.

My college has an office supply store that offers damaged or outofpront books for a huge discount (they cost about 6$ each) and every now and then they have something that i have looked for. I usually look in the library though (being a poor student and all).

In college I used the library all the time, because it was such a big one. The local city library was very good too. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to read for fun while I was in college.

I used to collect books but after the need to keep buying one cupboard after another, I realised this is not the right way. Besides, most of times, I do not re-read the books after I have completed it. So the cheapest alternative is for me to borrow. I borrow from the library. It is a bit inconvenient but I feel the cost greatly outweighs the convenience.

Hello celestemichelle, I still go to a bookstore to get my books. I also go to my favorite second hand bookstore where I can get the same book for half of the price. If I really want to keep the book for my collection, I will go and buy a new book. The ones that I get from the secondhand bookstore, I will normally sell them off online or to friends after I finished reading them.

I actually get my books a little bit of all of those ways. The only way I get new books is if I receive it as a gift or if I buy it at the Dollar Tree (since they are only a dollar there). I usually get them used though, either from other people or from one of the local Goodwills. I used to get them from the library, but I had kept some books overdue when my husband went into the hospital. So, I have fines at the library that I can't pay, so I have to wait till I can pay them to be able to get books from there.

Here in Spain, books are quite expensive, so there are lots of book exchanges. The way it works is this. You can buy a used book for 2 euros, or you can return a book and exchange it for another for 1 euro. I have a group of friends with similar reading tastes, and we pass our books around when we've read them. Whoever receives the book last then takes it to the book exchange and gets a new one, which she is the first to read before passing it on. This way, the 1 euro book is read by 4 or 5 people, making it even cheaper. I would suggest it to your book store people as an extra option for fiction, as it is a good way of making more money with little or no investment. They could start it off with some books from their stock and then put a big notice in the window. The great thing is, the stock is continually changing without expense, and the book store will attract new customers who may go on to buy other books. Good topic.

It depends actually on the need for which I am buying the book for. My reading for pleasure books are new. Reference books for my studies I would buy used ones or take from the library as I need them of various versions.
