My husband had the same problem - he kept getting viruses and trojans and I kept wasting a lot of time locating and deleting them. In the past few years my husband destroyed 2 hard drives this way.
When I replaced the last hard drive and reloaded windows XP, I told him he could not use it until I found a good antivirus and got it loaded. I tried a couple that I bought; but, they were not compatable with our ISP which provides a built in spam blocker and anti-spyware program.
I finally found a FREE antivirus on the internet; downloaded it and he hasn't had a virus in almost a year.
The program is called "AntiVir Personal Edition". It is free to download and update. Very simple to use. If you do not already have a spam blocker and anti-spyware program, the website I found it at (majorgeeks.com) has those programs available also and a whole lot more.
Here is a link directly to the page where you download it -
http://www.majorgeeks.com/AntiVir_Personal_Edition_d955.html
They have a lot of good programs you can download - some are free and others you can buy - but, they tell you upfront whether it is free or not and how much it costs if you want to buy one.
Hope this helps.

I have used norton internet security. In my opinion it is best. But there is one problem. Frequently I have seen it failed to catch worms. For that I used Avira 9 free edition

I am using avira anti virus on my computer. I have tried avg, mcafee, norton but I find avira better as per experience. Aside from that, I have also installed super anti spyware on my computer. I usually do a complete scan every month both for virus and for spywares. I am not saying that I have the best protection but obviously I am very much satisfied with what I am using.

Try McAfee products, i used it from 2006, licensed from my ex company, until now yet i haven't any threats in my computer. If you installed Anti virus after your computer had infected, it's waste of time, even if you could clean all the file, the damaged caused by anti virus cannot be recovered. Anti virus is program to protect or prevent virus before they caused more damaged to your computer. So, my suggestion is you re-installed window first and then install your anti virus and and try to scan again your computer. Hope help, Happy myloting my friend

I have already tried reinstalling the windows it didn't helped. If you are telling me to format my hard drive and then reinstall windows then I cannot do this as I have lots of important information and data in my computer.

Try Avira. Free for personal use and beats the expensive ones test after test.

I think you are better off reading through the independent reviews to see which perform best and making your choice based on proven performance. It is seldom the big name, expensive ones that are best.
If you install and trial several you may not learn much. I had Nortons preinstalled when I bought my last computer and let it stay there for the 30 day trial period: when I scanned the system it reported all well; when I scanned with AVG at the end of the month, I found several trojans and lots of spyware and malware which Nortons had not blocked.
There is also the problem of littering your hard drive with fragments of programs after uniistalling: I have found antivirus software particularly annoying in this respect, leaving hidden folders and drivers behind.

What is the specs of your computer? It is better to have more RAM and high speed processor so you can use two or three antivirus at the same time. I used Avira free edition, Macafee Enterprise 8.0.0, COMODO Internet Security and USB Disk Security. First of all, having an antivirus is a prevention for malicious files that will destroy or infect you computer. When the security software ask permission about what to do to a detected virus or suspected virus, do not carelessly ignore even you know that you have a right antivirus installed in your computer.

I think having more than one internet security installed on the computer will slow it down so I want one which will at least block threats from the internet.

Personally I believe that AVG combined with spybot is the best .I will be notified immidiately when problems occur.

I am using McAfee, previously I had installed Kaspersky but I found that my system slowed down and hard disk often crash so I switch it to McAfee, so far it is running good and I don't have any problem. It has site advisor too which I find it really helpful.

try Avira or Avast..they are very good compared to AVG..
yah AVG does not use too much of your resources but it'll took many false results especially when a software/program is generated with autoIT..unlike Avast and Avira they are the rising
AV's..but if you wanted it licensed and have the means to buy one..try Kaspersky, BitDefender or NOD32...

i use Norton Gaming edition.. its ultimate.. I tried for norton internet security but my processor doesnt respond fastly.. So Gaming edition.. it is released by NORTON for thise who are playing games thruogh LAN.. They dont want to scan for each computer which hinders the speed.. but u have to manually update it(get the update file and run) . Now my PC is almost safe.. And finally a good spyware like spybot..

Right now i'm using avira antivirus but i still think kaspersky is the best. Kaspersky is easy to use and does not make ur PC slow. I don't like using AVG coz it don't really help me in protecting my PC

There are many anti-malware scanners and protectors out there.
There are also many firewalls, and both can be found for free.
For me, I prefer to use F-Secure Internet Security 2009 as my anti-virus.
After that, I have 4 other programs that I can use to scan in different ways, and protect myself where others dont.
Among those programs, I have Trojan Remover Pro, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and SUPERAnti-Spyware Pro.
