Do you think motorcycle riders should wear helmets?

While I was in Indiana, I saw several motorcylce riders witout helmets. I questioned my b/f about it because in my state it is required to always wear a helmet. I am all about personal choices but after further research I found there are several states in which there is no helmet law. I personally would not ride without one but I was raised in a place where you couldn't. What do you think? Should everyone wear them or do you think it's ok that they don't? Is there a helmet law where you are?

Here in Finland you have to wear a helmet even when riding a regular bike. I think everybody should wear helmets when riding with big motorcycles or/and going fast. If you're not going too fast and you're riding something like a normal bike or a small motorcycle and don't do any tricks with it, wearing helmet is not mandatory in my opinion. It's still a good thing though.

Heyya IronMaiden! I'm all about personal choices. I would be very uneasy to say the least if I was on one without a helmet. Things can happen so quickly. I guess they were just so used to not wearing one that they don't really think about it. Thanks for the response.

Ofcourse motorist should and must always wear or use helmet because it is for your own safety. If u love your life you must follow the safety procedures, because its not only you will be benifited fr0m wearing a helmet plus u can avoid disturbing other people,we cant predict when accident(s) will happen so we must be very careful by taking necessary preacautions isnt,we always think and puT it on our mind that safety first before anything else

I do think that they should wear helmet because you never know when you will run into an accident and if you do, he helmet is the only protection you can possibly have. I mean the motorcycle cannot offer any form of protection should there be a car accident and therefore everybody riding on them should at least have a helmet that at least gives them the least possible protection.

I agree that things happen very fast. There isn't any protection accept for what the rider is wearing. Sometimes it's other's mistakes that we have to prepare for and we can never know when they will make them. Thanks for the input.

I wish I could show every bike rider pictures of what came into the Emergency room before there was a helmet law. One of the main reason these laws have passed is the expense to the community to pick up the pieces from those accidents. If the person survives often the expense of caring for them the rest of their lives often falls to the taxpayers. All this just to feel the wind in their hair.

I feel it really depends upon where you are wearing it, like in cities which are usually crowded and the speed limit cannot be exceeded by 30knph because of the traffic i feel helmets can make more damage here......as it is it is so bulky and you cannot see towards your right or left........there is only a straight view so people cannot see vehicles overtaking them in crowded cities..... Whereas i feel that helmets are very necessary while you drive on highways and main roads as the speed there is much more than the regular lanes......so there are chances of accidents here and if you fall at the speed on 80-100 kmph then imagine what would happen to your head....... So if you are not wearing helmets while riding bikes on highways then you would soon be Hell-Met !!!!! Ride safe !!!!

Hi John4Christ! I can see what you mean about time and place. At lower speeds and limited view I can see why they would be a burden for some. It really amazed me that I saw so many people not wearing one. Thank you for the input.

Hi JenInTN, Well I think that wearing helmet is a necessity while riding a motorcycle, it is for the protection of the rider. I used to ride a motorcycle with my husband or son and even though it is hot and heavy we always wear helmet. I think other rider don't understand why they need to wear the helmet or maybe they just don't want to wear it for they think thier head are harder than helmet. Thanks, can you be my friend?

Sure..I just accepted your friend request. I look forward to our interraction here and wish you the best. I think that a lot of the reason some are still not wearing them is because they are used to not doing it. Sometimes these things are done out of habit or law. I agree it is more dangerous not to wear one. I have enjoyed some rides myself but could never dream of not wearing a helmet. Thanks for the response and friend request. Take care.

I think it is very important to wear a helmet. As a nurse i have seen people who thought it was not important. I seen what going at 55 miles per hour and hitting a pole head on will do to you. So yes please wear a helmet. I would hate for you to be the next one hurt from not wearing one. Have a bleseed day.

you have to pay a much higher insurance premium to go without a helmet from what I understand. I had a friend who was a nurse in the E.R., she said that helmets caused broken necks, but no helmets were "organ donors."

I don't think Nevada has a helmet law. I used to live in Arizona and They did or was it the other way around, anyway I think you should wear a helmet for safety reasons. Who cares what it looks like as long as it protects you.

Here in the Philippines, you are required to wear a helmet whenever you wear a motorcycle or a motorbike. Policemen won't tolerate you for not wearing helmets because it's against safety precautions and the law. Here in the Philippines, if the policemen caught you without a helmet when riding a motorcycle, they would arrest you. No questions asked. That's why I never ride a motorcycle without wearing a helmet because I can die just by not wearing it. You never know when you will meet accidents. That's it. Happy myLotting

Thanks for sharing the laws of your country. It is very strict here in areas too but some states have different laws. I think it is dangerous too. The accident may not even be your fault. Can't control other people.

In my country, there's a law stating all motorcyclist should wear helmets. It's hard to find one that don't unless you go to suburban area where the motorcyclists only take a short ride from home to a shop nearby or similar situation. Personally I think it's a good rule. I think motorcyclist can easily injure themselves when accident happen. They don't have airbag or strap to seat to avoid thrown out of vehicles. Helmets can protect their heads, the least protection we can hope for when riding a motorcycle.

I would say YES. Of course we must wear helmets when we ride our motorcycles. In my country, Indonesia, there is a strict law about it. Riders, whether the like it or not, have to wear helmets. That's the rule. It is really important to understand that helmet can save our lives if things go wrong. If a rider (wearing no helmet) falls off his motorbike you can imagine the damage that the head might experience. That's why I agree with you. Never ride your motorcycle without wearing a helmet. Crystal clear! Cheers!

Definitely. Around the world, motorcycles pose a great threat on the lives of those who use it. In my school, lots of students meet accidents because of their motors. One way to reduce damage in a motor accident is by wearing a helmet.

Well I live in Indiana and we pertty much here dont wear helmets..I do know that most states we ride in we have to have one so we just keep them on the bikes for when needed...I can say that even if you have a helmet on it is not a sure thing that you are going to be safe from head injury...Happy Riding.

Yes I think that people on motorcycles really need to wear a helmet. I don't know if its a law where I live. I am sure it is since they just came out with all kind of laws for motorcycles but I don't ride one so I don't have to worry about it. I think they are too dangerous.

I live in OH, where you don't have to wear a helmet. It makes no sense to me since you do have to wear a seat belt. Seems that a helmet would protect more than a seatbelt, in most cases. I can understand why some don't like to wear helmets, but I still would want to wear one since I would feel more protected if I had one on. I think riders should wear them.

We don't have the law, JenInTen. Helmets do NOT have to be worn. It is the cyclists choice to wear them or not.

Mornin..dear Jen! You betchum...all cylclists be whatever shud have a "skid bucket"on! That's what they call them here in B.C. Motorcyle helmet laws came into effect here, many years ago! And just about 7 years ago, helmets are required for cyclists, as well! During my 13 years as a paramedic..the amount of injuries that I attended, many head injuries would have been reduced greatly if the patient had been wearing a helmet! As uncomfortable as they may seem, life with a head injury reduces the quality of life! Once again, thanks for caring! There must be a kindred spirit in you...for you to know that I was hurting! Luv ya! Cheers!

Thank you, truly, for the best response...it truly made my day! I would like to add an addendum to your discussion! Two weeks ago, my friend was riding her E-bike home (Electric bike with maximum speed of 29 mph)! (I have one, too,) Very economical! She rode hers with a cyclists helmet, I have a proper motorcyle, full face helmet! I have implored her, since I bought mine to get a proper helmet.....Sadly, she hit a pothole in the road.....flew off her bike (probably at about 20 miles an hour) and face planted! She just returned from hospital, steel plates in her jaw, both sides, and a complete nose reconstruction....and will require lots more plastic surgery! Not to mention a broken ankle as well! I hate to say this...but I rest my case, a full & proper helmet would have saved her face & facial trauma! What truly saved her life, it happened to be at the time a Ferry had unloaded, and the first FOUR cars upon the scene, if you can believe it were Drs. heading to their summer cottages at the North End of the Island! They were able to stablize, and stop her from drowning in her own blood! Her angels were definitely with her! I wished all the "nay" sayers could read this! Hope summer is treating you well, my dearest! Mine is FAR TOO hectic! Luv ya! Cheers!

I think it should be a personal choice. Being out on the highways and such it is only smart. I think they really don't help much alot of times but every bit helps. I think it takes away from the riders freedom and what makes them want to do what they are doing. I like having the option. Yet I wouldn't want to see a child on the back of one without a helmet either.

I do believe that it should be the law to wear helmets while riding a motorcycle. It's very dangerous and the way many people drive and ride nowadays it would be the safest and smartest thing to do. I know it's a law here in California as well. As long as their are stupid drivers and people who like to take chances while riding and driving I will wear a helmet. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija
