Does clapping really burn calories?

I heard that everytime you clap you burn a calorie. Is it really true? That would be amazing! You could clap 7000 times and lose 2 pounds in a day! :O

It's a lovely thought but makes me wonder why the machines in the gym seem to take so much effort before a single calorie is counted. Everything we do uses energy, some activities more than others. If loosing weigh were so simple we'd all be deaf from the noise of everyone wandering around claping til their fingers ached, lol. I think this may be a round of applause rather than one solitary clap but without scientific evidence who can say for sure. Still every time you clap a fairy is born so not a bad idea!

Yes, there's always hope that greatest of treasures, and if you're still clapping repetitive strain injury, ear ache and loss of friends as everyone gets sick of you. Maybe you could get huge arm muscles, they could research that at the same time, heehee? Only teasing I suppose enough of any exercise has to have some benefits. Have a great day and remember to clap a few fairies into existence when no-ones watching.

No way can clapping burn 1 calorie per clap! I am a runner, and even when I'm running VERY hard, I don't burn more than 10 calories a minute. I wear a heart rate monitor so I know how much I burn. I suppose clapping would be better than nothing, but there are way more interesting things to do in order to burn calories, that would burn them much faster :)

Just when I thought I figured out those skinny artists' secret... :D lol so it's not true, ok but it would make sense, that's why almost every singer is thin, 'cause they go on concerts and clap all the time lol I run, too, and I burn about 40 calories in 5 minutes, I know how hard it is, that's why I was hoping there was some other easier way :)

If kissing can burn calories, i don't clapping won't. I think any physical activity will burn calories but it just depends on the output and the intensity. Weightlifting is harder than clapping therefore weightlifting can burn calories than clapping. So some people even if they weightlift, sometimes it's not enough to burn enough calories/fats so i guss what more if you'll just clap?

Boy it I knew that was true I would be clapping all day long. But, I really doubt that it will make you lose weight.

Everything you do burns calories! Some things more than others, obviously. However, I would say that each single clap does not burn 1 calorie. Perhaps what that person meant was each time you applaud something, you burn a calorie. So that is probably at least 10-20 claps. I dont think I could clap that many times to lose 2 pounds... my hands would hurt too much!! I prefer to spend the time with my husband to burn extra calories!!

Yeah... so it was a myth afterall... :) I knew it was too good to be true... There was a question on a weight loss site, asked by a person who had a small accident or something and couldn't exercise for a while but still didn't want to stop her workout, and someone told her she should clap 100 times and she'll burn 100 calories... I know that site very well and I know there aren't any idiots who just make fun of others, so I supposed that was true... I guess the person was just misinformed :)

I don't know if this is true, but if it were, I don't think it will burn your calories fast. I guess one should do the conventional way if he/she really wanted to lose weight SERIOUSLY. According to what I've read in Time Mag, a couch potato can be physically active by doing at least 15 minute household chore per day and when he feels he can do more, he can increase the time up to an hour to get the ideal hour per day which is 2 hours.. There are also some exercises that speeds up the calorie burning easily personally I prefer belly dancing because it burns 300 calories per hour and that's equivalent to one full meal.
