Many a times this has happened to me. I dream I am falling, falling, down and then I awake with that same falling sensation till I realise I am safe in bed and not on the floor. Its an awful feeling and it feels soo real, you get up with a running heartbeat. Do you guys ever experince this feeling, and if it occures, what is the meaning of this. It leaves me baffled, for this is quite an experince and happens quite often.

Falling is a very common dream actually, falling is an indication of insecurities, instabilities, and anxieties. You are feeling overwhelmed and out of control in some situation in your waking life. This may reflect the way you feel in your relationship or in your work environment. You have lost your foothold and can not hang on or keep up with the hustle and bustle of daily life. When you fall, there is nothing that you can hold on to. You more or less are forced toward this downward motion without any control. This lost of control may parallel a waking situation in your life. Falling dreams also often reflect a sense of failure or inferiority in some circumstance or situation. It may be the fear of failing in your job/school, loss of status, or failure in love. You feel shameful and lack a sense of pride. You are unable to keep up with the status quo or that you don't measure up. Falling dreams typically occur during the first stage of sleep. Dreams in this stage are often accompanied by muscle spasms of the arms, legs, and the whole body. These sudden contractions, also known as myclonic jerks. Sometimes when we have these falling dreams, we feel our whole body jerk or twitch and we awaken from this jerk. It is thought that this jerking action is part of an arousal mechanism that allows the sleeper to awaken and become quickly alert and responsive to possible threats in the environment.

Wow, thats some explanation ! What you say seems very logical, and Im indeed zapped. I dont think I have any inferiority complex, am well placed in my job, have a loving family, How then did I dream this falling. Its all a mystry but your answer seems very logical, more so about the muscles going into contractions and we wake up with that jerky feeling. Good show friend. I am impressed.

you might just be lucky.. because most people have said that if your dreaming your falling and you fall on the floor at the same moment you fall in your sleep your body shut down.. this is because its a natural reacton for your brain to act this way.. because it thinks your body shuts off in your dream it will think same when you fall off your bed.. i'd say your very lucky

I have experienced this several time as well. There was even a time when I had a recurring dream that when I dreamt about it again, I KNEW I was dreaming and that is why I actually jumped on my own will. It was a wonderful sensation and I'm just happy that I didn't have to dream about crashing to the ground beneath me haha that would have sucked. I have this weird "habit" of waking up on the "devil's hour" and I got really freaked out because it has been going on for years no. I tried learning more about dreams and sleeping patters that lead to dreaming, see: http://www.thingswelovetohate.com/2009/06/dreamless-sleeps.html Thanks for the response on my discussion :)

These types of recurring nightmares must be a drain on your health. I shudder to think of what you must be going through, knowing you are dreaming of falling again and again. A few times in a lifetime if more than enough for me. I hope all your research on dreams has given you some clue about recurrence of your dreams. All the best and thanks.

No I haven't, but I dreamed about quite the opposite of that, I'm flying and soaring the wide sky... its a good feeling, they say its because there's a current issue or situation that I'd been wanting to escape from. I'm not sure though about what falling means.
• India

When you are flying, you must be feeling real good. Yes, as you say you might be wanting to escape a crtain situation, the falling feeling is awful. My lotters say it could be due to some complex or our soul leaving the body into the astral world and coming back with a jerk to us. Whatever it is, it leaves you panting for breath

Hi - Not sure really what the falling feeling when I wake up really means...I've never known that I was traveling outside my body but then how would I know. Anyone know more about Astral Travel? It would be fascinating to know for sure what it is about and if it is real or not!

I have sometimes, but depending on how I wake up sometimes I feel like I am slammed back down, like into my body. It makes my entire body jerk, and I usually get a headache, that's why I don't like being woken up, because that can happen.

They say the soul leaves the body and roams the astral world in our sleep. When it comes back, we get the feeling of falling and our body shudders and wakes up. This could be true, as I have read in books that the soul can do this. Thanks.

Oh yeah! its feels terrible. You can even feel yourself palpitating. I dont like the feeling of that..because for one, im afraid of heights..so falling is not such a good idea for me even on dreams. I always wakes up perspiring when these things happens to me.

Yes,its an awful sensation and some replies shed light on this. It says our soul goes out of the body into the astral world and when it comes back, it jerks your body and you get the feeling of falling down. Another says it is how you judge yourself, like a complex. For all the reasoning, the feelingis awful and worst part is so many of us get it.

I have only had this happen to me once and that was when I was 18 years old. I didn't know it at the time but I had the dream and woke up so nauseous that I threw up. I found out a week later that I was pregnant so I think I may have been super sensitive at the time. Considering I threw up all the time with that pregnancy.

Such dreams usually leave us cold and shaking, with a palpating heartbeat and confusion. The fact that you threw up must be because you were pregnant.

flying - dreams,flying,fall
We do have the same dream occurring in our sleep. It happened to me frequently during my college days. I always dream of myself flying with out direction. I just wonder why I can fly and I don't even had a wings in my dream. Then there's the feeling of falling and falling, your breath will be taken away as if I'm being deprived of oxygen. I still can remember that I'm trying desperately to stop the fall but I cannot hold on anymore. The good thing is that when I'm awaken I'm still lying in the bed with all the tangled blanket and bed sheet combined creating a tornado in the center of my room. Thanks God...I never dreamed of it again. I don't mind the flying part because I love it. what i don't like is the falling part that I can not even hold on to any solid object.

Must be wonderful to be able to fly and then the awful falling part. Do read mermaid and tallygirls replies. They make sense.

Wow, I didnt realise this was so common. Its happened to me on/off all my life as long as I can remember. Sometimes, I think its just when i rollover the edge of the duvet and it feels like I'm about to fall off something but other times its for no reason. I hate the waking up part. I can never remember where I was falling from, just the actual falling feeling and then I wake up and my heart is jumping out of my chest. I did find that these dreams subsided after I moved out of my parents house, where I was constantly bullied, taken for granted, and could never live up to my families expectations. Maybe this has something to do with it. I noticed a past post on here says that its related to anxiety or other stressful traits.

Yes mermaid and tallygirl have both given very decent explanations. Yours match more with mermaids. Its the complex we develop that makes us feel like this. Im glad you are feeling better after m oving out and hope you never have to dream such falling again.

I do encounter this quite often especially during the beginning stage of my sleep. When I am almost asleep, I will suddenly feel that I am falling and I will wake up with a jerk. If I am very tired, then I don't encounter this falling sensation cos I will fall asleep straight away, zzzzzz...... =)))

Guess it has something to do with our complexes in life, or some astro form in which the soul leaves teh body and comes back with a jerk. Thats what I learnt from this discussion. Read the replies of tallygirl and mermaid.

I also dream like yours.I often dream I'm flying in a city sky. I'm flying like a bird.My two hands moving ups and downs like the wings of a bird. But I can't get down the earth. I'm trying and trying but getting no shelter. I don't think there is meaning of any dream. But I want to fly like a bird.Birds need no passport. Next life I want to be a bird.Pray for me.I'm sure God will grant kety's prayer.

Yes, I've had the feeling too..tho usualy I don't remember the dream part. Just wake up with the feeling of just having landed on the bed and a racing heart. It is very unsettling. I once had someone tell me that we travel outside our bodies at night, astral travel and that the feeling is when we are suddenly jerked back into our physical bodies. Not sure what to make of that concept...
• India

Good heavens, is that what is happening to all of us. I know for sure from books read by me that soul can leave the body into the astral world and come back. Mow that makes sense. When the soul comes back, we get that jerky feeling and we get up. Amazing. Thanks. You and mermaid have given very logical answers. Thanks.

Falling dreams can be quite scary and out of control. The good thing is that you know it is a dream and that you are going to wake up and be fine. Dreams like that have happened to me and i have woken up sitting up in my bed because i was so scared. Another interesting dream is the lucid dream where you are aware that you are dreaming and you can do what you want to do. One way to find out that you are in a lucid dream is to look at your hands. Most people are unable to look at their hands if they are not in a lucid dream.
• India

Ive never heard of a lucid dream. What is it ? Id be g rateful if you could explain in detail, and why we cant see our hands. Do read mermaid and Tallygirls replies. They make sense.

This happened to me many times as well! and each time it does, I wake up "partially" with a jerk and clutching whatever I can get my hands on, my pillows, my bolsters for security. Sometimes I really wonder is it because I am too active in the day such that my mind can't go into a state of rest at night. Do dreams mean that the sleep is not restful enough? I have heard people say having dreams mean you are in deep sleep, but the scientific ones tell me that it's because my mind is still working. Any enlightenment on this? On a random note: my friend was dozing off beside me during lecture, and i think he felt this falling sensation as well and he woke up with a jerk and a loud "ugh" haha. Guess it's quite common huh.

Tallygirl and mermaid have given pretty good explanation of our falling down in our sleep. I suggest you read their replies. Amazing. Dreams are supposed to be when we are in deep sleep only, but the mind is not at rest, I suppose. Its all a mystry as most of us have this dream.
