nuclear bomb - What would you do if world war three started?

Suppose world war three started and your county is involved. What would you do? Build a shelter and hide? Or would you fight the protect your country? And if you choose to fight, do you think you'd be of any meaning, with all these nuclear bombs? Do you think one soldier still means something if you've got weapons of mass destruction to kill them all with one push of the button?

As an old soldier, I would probably fight again if I could find a weapon and ammo. Quick thinking by President Kennedy and his brother Robert averted WWIII and it is my prayer that level heads will prevail and our present and future President won't have that situation to deal with ever again. If it came to nuclear war, a person wouldn't want to be around later anyway.

It's good that we have a President today that is at least trying to negotiate peace instead of making threats. I asked a Sunday school class (grownups) "what if there was nothing?" and everyone looked dumbfounded. That's exactly what we would have if WWIII took place and there was a nuclear war. Those who survived the initial explosions would probably die from the after effects.

True. Suppose The USA and Iran get into a nuclear war, the world would just vanish. Nothing would be left standing... Scary thought isn't it, knowing you've got nothing to say about your own safety.

True. Obamma is going to change America. That's what I hope at least.

I'd definitely build a shelter and hide away. I don't see the point it wars, it's all needless killing because people either want more land / money / oil, or because they disagree with a certain person. I mean come on - BIG DEAL. Not EVERYONE is supposed to get on with everyone else in the world.

we could sleep better if we'd just all be peaceful... Belgium has almost no soldiers and we are in peace. It seems America is just so violent. Almost everybody down here looks at it that way. Bush has given you all a violent image. You live in fear because of the media and constant terrorist threads. Why don't we have that in Belgium than?

United States Army Veteran here. I would re-enlist, and go where I was needed. No use in hiding. Only a select few are important to get into the nuclear shelters anyways. I think soldiers are important, they always have been and they always will be. Countries go to war all the time, and not all feel the need to use nuclear weapons, though they might have them. I'm no hero or anything, and know I wouldn't be saving the world, but there's no use in cowering away either.

I understand what you are trying to say. You are against violence, which is fine, but understand that soldiers don't start wars, and most aren't there to commit violent acts. If I decided to re-enlist knowing that it would send me to war, it would not be support "a war just for wars sakes", but support my fellow countrymen. The ones who are giving up time away from their families, and missing holidays, and missing life in general to support the United States. The ones who are told that their actions are meaningless. They who are told, by someone who's never stood up for anything in their life or has not seen the direct effects of United States soldiers overseas and the good that they can do, that their time's been wasted. I am against all kinds of violence. I am against domestic violence, child abuse, drive-bys, terrorist attacks and genocide just to name a few. I do not forget however, that there are plenty of people out there, that for no other reason than that I wake up and breathe each morning, would love to commit violent acts on me. I'm actually a rather shy and meek person, but it is to be pushed aside when the wolves are at the door.

Good point there. But don't you feel like supporting the war by being a soldier? Because I'm against any form of violence, and don't see the point in starting a war really.

Let us only hope it never gets to that point. But if I have to participate in a war it would be as a doctor, just like my mom is.

It is true that if nuclear war is in place, troops are not that meaningful. But then, the chance of such a war is rather low because no countries would want to initiate such a war as it surely will suffer most. Just take a look at how US has fought the war against Iraq and you can see how valuable the troops are comparing to the mass destruction weapons. Back to the topic of world war three. Will it ever come? I have no idea but I don't think I will live to see it happen. Having such a war requires a nation that is so strong and aggressive at the same time where it attacked some other countries with strong allies for something valuable. So, the question is, which country is powerful and aggressive at the same time? Even if there is one, which country with strong allies they are going to attack? And for what? I have no answers for these questions and thus I don't think world war 3 will happen soon. There can be wars between countries from time to time but that is of smaller scale. Of course, the best would be there are simply no wars at all.

Even if Russia is shutting the tap, there are still more oil reserve around the world such as in the Middle East. Of course those things will cause tensions but starting a war? Put it this way, if Russia really does some nasty things, which country will be capable to start a war against it? I can think of the only powerful nation and suppose you are the president, would you risk sending your troops and ammos to such a far away countries to fight a war that is going to cost you a great deal of resources? Not that it cannot be done but doing it will surely means to make more damage to your own country rather than your enemies. Of course multiple nations can join together to fight against it, but is it really that easy to pull together nations of different interests to fight against a big guy? Not that it is impossible but I will say it is highly unlikely.
@toonvk (267)

You're wrong about that. Because there is only one pipeline providing oil to Europe and America. Guess who owns the pipeline? Russia. If they close the tap... Finito!

Iraq seems such a pointless war to me... And okay, world war three is not so hard to start. Suppose Russia is having problems with it's oil supply and it turns off the taps. Who North and South America, Europe and Africa would stop getting oil. Can you see what that would result to? No fuel, No gas since it's a substrate of oil, etc. Our economy would crash. And at that point there is no time to negotiate. At that point you have to swim or drawn.

i don't think the world war three will one day happen, because people now are enjoying their life. they all want to live a peaceful life. back to the topic, if the war really breaks out, i would be the fighter who will protect our country, even though i maybe of nothing, but i think i will try and contribute even a little to my country. even i maybe die in the end, i think it is worthwhile, because i fulfill my obligation as a citizen.

these days, there will be no threat between two countries, only the conflict of benefit. i think resources and religion are two main causes of modern war. such as Iraq war, the american government just want to obtain the oil resource. for the time being, both developed and developing countries are focusing on their economical development, so instead of thinking about war, the governments pay much attention to how to improve their economy ,how to become a strong nation.

Well, just hiding is never a solution. Moreover, whatever may be the destructing ability of the today`s bombs, a soldier is always of the foremost value. By the way, you need soldiers to push the buttons, design strategies and fly the fighter jets.

But it only takes one soldier to fly a jet, it only takes one jet to fly a bomb somewhere, and it only takes one bomb to destroy an entire country, if not half the world. And by the way, nuclear bombs are launched in the form of a rocket these days no?

Hmm. I would fight for my country, if I feel that we are fighting for independence and if we are being oppressed. But if we are the oppressor, well that's a different thing altogether. I sure hope that WW3 won't ever happen, cause I think all the countries now have matured in terms of fighting ( I think. LOL) .. So I hope that this won't ever happen in my lifetime, or the lifetime of my children, and my children's children. =)

I will definitely fight till the last to protect my country and my race. As regards nuclear bombs, hardly 10 countries have the nuclear bomb. There might be many countries having the technology to make a nuke, but delivering it is another matter. So only smaller countries will get destroyed and big countries (in size) will survey the nuclear hollocaust. So these countries need the soldier to protect them in the future.

Hi Toonvk! Have you heard of the doomsday clock - It's a pictorial representation of how close we are to a nuclear war. Currently the hands are a 5 to 12 - we are closer to the possibilty of a global thermal nuclear exchange than we have ever been in history. If you made it to a shelter - you'd need a least 50 years minimum with clean food and water - surviving out in the open would be impossible. one soldier does mean something but with military tech heading towards gunnery bots/tanks/planes etc - most soldiers would effectively become pilots! Someone said that it would take at least 1000 bombs to destroy India- it would take around fifty to a hundred to completely make it a smouldering crater, its not the initial blast its the levels of radiation. The US and Russsia have enough nukes to cover the surface of the populated earth twice over! this doesn't include The EU, Israel, China, etc. It's difficult to prove the data when each country is very secretive about it's nukes. The real threat is the possibilty that a someone would detonate a portable nuke on someone elses soil(Russia LOST some in the 90's) - if there was no missle launch no-one would know who had done it. It is very unlikely that a terrorist organisation would use a nuke - it would unify the world in hunting them down.

Thanks for the BR Toonvk! The whole thing is a scary, but I have hope and faith that humanity will eventually turn from this course! As a side note - I've been playing Fallout3, it made me really curious about the whole situation and where the world really stands. It is arguably one of the greatest post apocalyptic fantasy roleplaying computer games ever made! give it a go - it takes no prisoners in the content but uses every nuclear holocaust movie trick in the book!

Sadly, my country almost certainly would be involved. I suppose I'd take the kids up to my moth-in-law's place in Grass Valley. She's somewhat isolated, got a bit of land and a well. I'm too dang old and out of shape to do any fighting myself, and you're right, if it were a nuclear war, what would be the point?

I express the same feeling of user who replied first to this discussion. Couldn't even think off such a thing. looks to be very cruel. So we can always think that it will never happen. World war will not start because of India. Atleast that is what I believe. War mongering countries like China and US will indulge in war. And India's entry into war can decide the side which will win. China much interested with Pakistan relation, as well as with Srilanka and doing small small benefits for all the countries which are around India. Don't know why these things are happening. But I wish, it should never happen. if it happened, as you said, that will be the end too.

All that Iran, Iraq is just u bunch of s***. I makes me really angry. Those coountries didn't do anything wrong. You should point your fingers at russia and China. Russia gives everybody oil. What if they stop doing that? Check your household items, your kids toys, your clothes, everything is made in China. The economy would crash if China or Russia would turn against us. It's a dangerous world we live in.

oh, no no it is horrified, the people have no such this great conflict each other contry, what interest can make them so mad and so extremely to solve this problem, the people develop such speed like that and make a great treasures whatever the spirit treasures or the substance treasures, the people have no motive power to struggle each other, other sode of such this thing, the people are getting close each other through the economical or culture communication, and getting know each other, the small scale of the world wide can break out the small war, not just like the world war three, just like the terrorist organizations such as the taliban ect.and some countries can break out some conflict like the palestation and isreal, because of the territory of conflict, because of the rich of the countries, the people do not like war at all, they are like to live easy and cozy and not beat battle like war, such this like many developed countries, they are more like the cozy too. what the people make a war for, what motivation they do for?
