How do you Save on Gas since the price is on the Rise?

A few months back the Gas prices started falling really fast. One day you was paying $3.99 and next day it dropped 10 cents. We as Americans started seeing hope as the prices continue to drop. Then Summer hit and now they are their way back up again. I find myself a little gun shy, and starting planning my trips to do what I needed to all at one time. That gives me a couple of days not to have to go out in the car which in return saves my Gas. So what do you do to help save your Gas?

I find it quite a coincedence that Gas can drop that fast in one day, and go up that fast during the traveling months. I don't trust these oil cooperations, don't believe anything they do. I believe that the more erands you run in one day, causes you to use more gas...it is the stopping and going and driving in traffic, that uses it up. Therefore I do one errand a day, if needed...so the gas does last longer.

For me I just dont use a car that often, If a place that I need to run an errant to is close I either take my bike or walk there. If its kinda far I might consider taking public transportation such as buses, subways, etc. If possible try to limit the time you let your car idle, and dont run the AC for long periods of time. Im sure just following those alone will help reduce the amount of gas your car uses and probably in the long run save you money for gas.

I know what you mean. I use my car wisely. I try to schedule my trips all at once. I agree with you, they pick the most traveling time to raise the gas. I would think that during holidays and travel that the stores would automatic get more revenue if the gas prices stayed the same.

I used to be one of those speed monsters y'know. The pedal is to the metal once the light turns green! Hahahahahaha.... but not anymore! Not only is that not good for gas mileage, it's also not very good for the engine, since it'll be at rest, then all of a sudden spinning at 3000 RPM! Definitely not good. Anyway - I read somewhere that if you drive below 2,000 RPM you'll improve your gas mileage since the motor is not spinning too fast. The fastest that you can go with 2,000 RPM is about 75 MPH which is 10 miles above the highway speed limit. I've been keepin' up with that and been doin' well. I drive a Ford Edge - and I think those numbers vary from car to car.

I had another comment that was telling me to use curse control. They had a very good point. I did put that to the test and I did see a difference. As far the speed monster, I too was one of them, but I have slowed down. You really don't get there that much faster, just the gas goes faster.

I've just noticed driving home this morning, a slight drop. One place was at 2.29, the average for the other cheap stations was 2.34. I had no hope when they dropped before lol. I knew it was only a temporary thing because of the election. Then summertime hit, and they use the "oh, we're using summer blend fuel so that's why the price is going up again" BS. It's going to keep going up and down a little bit where it's at, but I foresee more 3-4.00 a gallon gas in our near future. What I do now, I try really hard-really hard lol, to leave a few minutes earlier for work, so I can drive 65-70 mph on the highway instead of 75-80 mph. Keep checking my tires, make sure they're where they should be. And, fortunately I work at night, so most of my driving is done then, so I don't need the a/c, and if it is really warm, I put the top down :) I've noticed a slight increase in mpg. Also, we still have one gas station that carries what I call "real gas", not that E-10 ethanol cr*p. If you have the opportunity, try the two different gas blends and compare your mileage. Most people are losing an average of 10-30% in mpg using E-10. I get at least another 30-40 miles per tank using "real gas", so to me, it's worth the extra few cents more they charge per gallon. Unfortunately, they said they have to switch over to the E-10 eventually, but they're holding out as long as they can.

Thanks for you comments. I have also learned that some gas stations you can get better mileage than others. I have shopped around and found the one that works best for my car. I hope that prices will go down and stay there for awhile.

Well gas here was 2.37 this past week until amazingly the 4th of July weekend it shot up to 2.67 A 30 cent raise overnight. Makes me sick to be quite honest as an American to be victimized by these oil companies that are just legal thieves! Now that I got that rant out of the way. I too try to combine trips. I used to go to the grocery store two-three times per week now it is on Friday evenings only....which to be honest has saved me in more than just gas but I do try to eliminate my car moving anywhere a couple of days a week now.

Yes that took place where I live now. We have local Bluegrass events every few months. When an event is going on the nearby area the gas prices go up until the event is over. They made a statement on local radio station that the crowd was down then last year. Well maybe it is because they raised the price of gas, to where the campers couldnt afford both.

In my area, it's still really low! It's only at $2.29 a gallon right now - which is super cheap considering only last summer (or the summer before - I can't remember lol) - it was over $4 a gallon. I'm extremely thankful for this. I drive an older compact car, so I naturally get good mileage, thankfully. I get about 20 - 25 miles per gallon, which is pretty awesome. Unfortunately for me, I'm a driveaholic. Very true. I love driving and I'm constantly driving to work, malls, school, friends' houses.. And I never get tired of it. I try to coast when I can; and use cruise whenever I can. I live in a city, but I take the highway whenever possible to avoid the dreaded "city mileage". I also try to get my friends to carpool whenever possible. That's about it, though, for me!

WOW that is cheap. And where is it you live? Maybe it is close enough to me that I can get that price. Right now here in North East KY it is running about $2.39 gal. I look forward to seeing the prices drop. I hope.

Hello! Honestly, I haven't done much to save money on gas lately. Last summer when gas prices soared we did carpool together. We cut back on our drives we were accustomed to. This summer gas has not crept up a lot. Gas here in Central Texas is 2.37 and I can deal with that figure. We actually just came back from a 900 mile trip one way by car. We took advantage of the lower gas prices (compared to last summer) and treated ourselves to a trip to Colorado.

I want to say first,SORRY for it taking so long to get back to you. I thank you for your comment. I'm glad to hear that you got to take a trip and hope that you enjoyed it. I for one hope that I will be able to go on a trip next summer, if the gas prices are not against me.

We make our trips into town which is 22 miles away count by having a list of to do things and plan our route to save on the gas and miles and we only go to town on an as need basis. Usually once per week.

Since the gas price has been rising, I have been using the public transport more often than before instead of driving my own car when going to work and to places out-of-town. And, ofcourse, I would travel unless it is absolutely necessary !

We have an usual practice of closing the Gas cylinder valve after every usage. Heard from few friends that doing like can save the gas for atleast two days after the exhausting period.

Well, fuel here is £1.05 per LITRE. I have to use my car to get to/from work as public transport doesn't run at the time I need to travel (depending on my shift I could either get a bus there or get a bus home but never both - tho' it would be 2 buses with a wait in-between anyway) so, I do my grocery shopping and any other errands I need enroute. I make sure my tyre pressures are correct and avoid braking or accelerating sharply. I never use the air conditioning and try not to add extra weight by carrying stuff that i dont need.

The main thing that I try to do is to do everything in one trip. I take one day a week and pay bills ans shop. The closest town to me is eight miles away so I can't afford to drive back and forth everyday just to run to the store.

Hi rosepedal, I mistakenly thought this was a discussion about the price of gas which of course in England is that stuff that goes through pipes to heat the central heating and can sometimes leak and blow the house up. Here the price of petrol yo-yo's up and down but the most ridiculous thing is that the petrol station nearest to my house will have petrol now at 2.20 euvros for 1 litre, half an hour up the mountain it is 2.12 and hit the town half an hour after that and it is just touching the 2 evro mark, so that is all in the space of an hours drive. So to save on petrol I actually drive an hour to fill the car whilst at the same time stocking up on much cheaper groceries. Not quite sure how $3.99 compares with 2 evros which is now about equivalent to £2. I like to spot the differences between words used by Americans and Europeans by the way.

I have also done that I would wait to see if any body in my house need to do something like going to the store or making a payment and I would try to do it whe I go to the grocery so I can everything in that one trip and in one day. But now I have a better way to save gas and if great because I do not have to pay a single cent . I do not use the car yes I actually do not use it not because I want to save money on gas but because it those not work my neighbord is working at it and so far I gave him one hundred dollars for part and now it need a another part that is worth 125 and he is still not sure if that is going to help. Since I do not have that kind of money I don't know how long it would take untill I can have my car fixed. The good thing is that I have a walmart a few block away from my house the bad thing is that I live in Arizona and the temperature is 108 to 115 and there is no way I can walk with my kids in that heat. So there are sometimes that I would have to ask one of my neighbords to see if the are going to the store so I can go with them I really do not like to ask them to take me so I have to wait unitl they go.

I save gas by riding my bicycle whenever possible. Commuting to work save me about a hundred dollars a month. Zero emissions too. Better yet I'm healthier for it. When I do drive the family vehicle I follow two simple rules: Easy on the accelerator and easy on the brakes. We combine trips whenever possible.

If you drive on the freeway/highway alot, you should use your cruise control. That is the best way to save gas when driving on those roads. If your at a constant speed, your not burining your gas as fast as you would if you vere constantly braking and speeding up. I always use cruise control and trust me, you can tell the difference. It really helps.
