Do you worry about getting fat?

July 12, 2009 1:07am CST
Do you watch what you eat and maybe even count how much calories you have put into your body? Some people say that they keep track of how many calories they have eaten in a day. But I don't know how they are able to keep track of it. A cereal box says 1 serving is this much calories, but how much cereal is one serving exactly? I understand the nutritional value label on the cereal box but I don't know how much is one serving so how the heck do people keep track of how many calories they have eaten? I don't worry about what I eat as long as I exercise enough. What about you?

Hi iwinagain...I constantly worry about gaining weight and I have had a constant struggle with my weight. The only time that I was happy with my weight and my body was when I exercised for at least a half hour to an hour every single day. However this cannot happen any longer since I work full time and also have a husband and son to take care of. The only way I can control my weight at all is portion control and that happens when I read labels. The labels will tell you exactly what the serving size is, usually in cups if cereal or dry food. Good luck to you!

First, counting exactly is impossible, because food labels are allowed to be wrong by as much as 20%. So, my philosophy is this: you have to be knowledgable about what you are eating. You don't have to necessarily count every calorie to lose weight, but you should at least be aware that while peanut butter is very good for you, a mere two tablespoons (which is smaller than you probably think) is almost 200 calories. But to use that information, you have to be aware of roughly how much two tablespoons is, and how 200 calories affects your diet. The short answer? Peanut butter has a lot of calories. This is the kind of thing you learn when you pay attention, read labels, and know what your needs are. Once you know these kind of things, you instinctively are going to make better choices, and won't need to count. Then there are ground rules for those who don't want to follow that. Eat a lot of veggies. They fill you up, are infinitely good for you, and are far healthier than any alternative. Watch your portions. Our portions are WAAAAAY out of control. I believe that if we start watching our portions better, we'll stop seeing the correct size as way too small. There are a few exceptions to the portion rule in my book. Veggies is one of them, because even eating a lot of them is still not close to what the dietary guidelines recommend. So don't hold back on that helping of asparagus, and don't put extra butter on it either. Lastly: exercise. Studies have proven that all that matters is calories in, versus calories out. But exercise burns calories in and of itself, and it also keeps your metabolism a little higher. It aslo is infinitely good for you heart, risk of diabetes, cancer, etc. If you are an intense exerciser though, you should talk to someone about your diet. Your needs will be different. You know, once you get used to less sugar, salt, butter, grease, etc in your diet, you find you don't need it so much. I used to put a 1/4 cup of sugar in my coffee. Now I take coffee and tea without a drop of sugar, and even lightly sweetened tastes gross to me.

Hi iwinagain! I used to have a problem when it comes to my metabolism. Even if I do not eat that much, I easily get bigger. But that is a thing of the past. After having been more physically active, my metabolism has improved a lot. I spend at least an hour daily in the gym at least 5 times a week. I also jog or walk during the weekends. I have become more conscious of the food I eat. It has helped a lot in keeping me healthy!

frankly, yes, i fear getting fat. believe it or not it's because of finding good looking clothes. no offense to anyone but i prefer body hugging clothes. it's been hard finding these types of clothes after having a baby since even though you get your old shape back the stomach is sagging already. besides, i think if i lose control now with my weight, it would be impossible to get it back. food can be an addiction. and it's one addiction i have nothing against with. who doesn't like to eat ?

i love eating soo much, specially sweats.. but as far as what i have observed in my body, hhmm nothing change.. i do eat a lot but i think i am not getting bigger.. no belly, nothing.. i keep on asking on my friends, what's happening to me but they would just answer me, "oh your so lucky for having that body and apetite"..

If you eat sweats, that should explain why you're not getting any bigger! j/k I know it's a typo. lol The reason why you're not getting bigger is because you have a very fast metabolism, lucky you.

I've been fat all my life, so I don't worry about GETTING fat lol. I have lost about 30lbs in the past year, and kept it off, even though I had a baby (gained weight during the pregnancy, of course, but lost it after, plus some!) I have found after a lot of worry, low self-esteem, and yo-yo dieting, including a bout with bulleimia, that the best thing for me to do is focus on my health and conditioning. I like to know that I can jog for longer without getting tired, or that I can do more pushups or situps, or swim a km faster than I could before. I feel better when I eat healthier food, so as a reward for eating healthy, home-cooked meals, I let myself eat until I'm satisfied and try not to worry too much about calories. I struggle with a hormonal disorder that makes it easy to gain weight and hard to lose weight, and I also get faint and dizzy if I don't eat something every two hours, so I don't think I will ever be "skinny", but I have been losing weight slowly and steadily by focussing on healthy food and walking more places instead of taking the bus, and on putting myself in more active situations. For example, when babysitting, instead of watching the kids play street hockey, I grab a stick and join in! When they wrestle and it starts to turn a bit bitter, I grab them and carry them away from each other instead of yelling. This makes them giggle and helps me burn calories! When they don't want to go to bed, I say "do I have to carry you up the stairs again?" Of course they always giggle and say yes. It's working so far and I love it!

I am always thinking about it and trying to find fun ways to stay slim. I have a thigh trainer and just doing it 2 days I can tell a difference. I don't really pay attention to labels as much as I use to. I just try to eat as little as my stomach can handle and drink alot of water to help fill me up. Recently I even started thinking about working at a gym so I could workout for free and get fit. I would love to lose my baby belly.

I do not worry about getting fat, because its hard for me to gain weight. I've been trying for the longest to gain weight. Even though i could eat whatever i want, and not get fat. I still eat healthy.

I do try to watch what I eat. I try to not consume the average 2000 calorie a day intake. I used to drink alot of regular pop and now I have changed to diet so that cut my calorie intake quite a bit. I do worry about getting big someday and I dont want to. I need to start working out. I guess that is a new goal for me to work on.

yes i worry about getting fat. i do watch what i eat but i dont count calories. here in my country our meals always have rice, i try to eat half cup only. i have hypothyroidism, and even if i eat few i gain weight easily, this is because i have slow metabolism, so i really get worried about making myself fat. i am drinking senna tea in the evening, its the one that helps me control my weight and its a body cleansing tea too. sometimes i dont worry what i eat too as long as i drink that tea in the evening.

I always watch my weight or stature, as fat make people unhealthy and meaxea. I always paly sports such as basketball, soccer, badmiton, tennis and table-tennis to keep wight rather than control my diet. Being a dieter is very hard to me. And i wll insist on doing enough exercise to keep my stature. Many thanks for your discussion. Have a good time on mylot.

Every nutritional value label I have seen always gives the actual amount of one serving/portion i.e. 1 cup (8oz), 1/2 cup, 1 tbsp, 1 piece, etc. equals so many calories.

As a therapist, I see so many clients who worry about what weight they are or will become. The worry often acts like a "food magnet" to some in the way that the more they worry, the more hungry they become. The clients who end up coming to see me have usually been on strict diets, losing weight OK, but always feeling hungry with the result that when their reach their "goal weight", they relax, and start eating more again that puts on the weight. My method, whilst it isn't suitable for everyone, because we are all so different, involves finding a new way of eating that will be both satisfying and healthy. This can then be permanent with no thought of counting calories or losing weight again. I use a combination of counselling and meditation techniques. Where it tends to fail is with people who are not prepared to commit themselves, and there is nothing anybody can do about that, except the person him/herself. - Derek

i am not also very familiar with that calorie intake things...and i don't know how to count it! but i want my food to be nutritional as much as possible and to have a balance meal everytime...but there are times that that is not possible for me... i also eat what i want but in moderation and i don't eat much frozen foods with lots of preservatives...though sometimes when in hurry i have it. i am not that conscious when it comes to weight but of course i still want to look good and maintain a good body and health...

I am slim and I don't worry about the calories that I take in because no matter how much I eat I don't get fat. Maybe it is because of what I eat rather than how much I eat. I am very careful with my choice of food because a food allergy could trigger a flare up and my joints will get all swollen and painful.

I worry about my weight constantly. I count my cal's every day. I eat yogurt, salad, & stuff like lean cuisine and weight watchers. I don't know why I worry about my weight, but I do. And I always am on the scale.
