Every once in a while you hear about some person who had like 75 cats in their house and it was just a terrible mess. So how many pet cats do you think is too many?

I think you have too many of an animal, when the care of them is sacrificed for having all of them. So if some are the animals you have are being neglected due to having more they can either afford to take care of or you can handled, then I think you have too many of that particular animal.

Hello, I think "too many" is when the cats can't get the proper care they need. I had three cats at one time and I knew I couldn't have cared for more because I had to think of the vet care they needed once a year. The food and litter is something I included in my weekly shopping list so I had no problem.Any more cats would have been too expensive since I lived alone.

I think it all depends on your space and your ability to care for them. I have a few different friends that rescue animals. One couple has 30 cats and 9 dogs (they had them all fixed). Their house is always spotless and all the animals seem very happy and are all very friendly. That applies to my other friends animals too, as they all have about similar amounts. And, all the houses are spotless. It is a lot of work, but they do it for the animals. I can't even keep my house as clean as they do and I only have a cat.
If you rescue and take in animals to help them have a better life and most importantly have the resources, then having a lot of animals is not a problem. There are people who think they have good intentions, but end up in a horrible mess with too many animals and then they are contiuosly reproducing getting even deeper. That is never a good situation. I have known someone like that too, but she was depressed and couldn't really see that that situation was harming the animal as well as her.
Rescuing and taking care of animals is a big lifetime commitment and often expensive. Taking care of one or two is a big commitment too. So, whether someone is going to take care of 1 or 100 a lot of thought needs to go into the decision.

It really depends how much you clean and how big your house is. At one point, I had 9 cats (I rescued a pregnant cat, when I already had 3 cats) and that was way too many for me because I was living in a studio apartment at the time. Right now, I only have one cat, and I live in a bigger apartment now. I might want to get a second cat so that my kitty now has a friend.
But, I did know this one girl who had 30 cats that pretty much owned the downstairs of her house. She would get offended when people would come over and not want to hang down stairs because of the cat box smell. I never understood how you could be offended by that!

That's true, it does matter about your house. My aunt and uncle used to have 9 too but even though their house was small they lived in the country and the cats would go in the barn and stuff too. 30 is definitely a lot! I can see how her guests would want to stay away...

I have 3! They are all kittens (2 are 11 month old brother and sister and the other is a 6wk old)Sometimes it seems like too many, especially when they run around chasing each other all night, knocking stuff over.
