Plagiarism, do you take this seriously?

With almost 180,000 members sharing over 2M discussions already been posted, we can always find similar posts. Everyday, every single myLot day we come here, we will see topics we already seen before. And most of the time, we can't help but to respond, too. Let's not talk about plagiarism because I know, this is a serious matter. And I don't want to get this discussion too complicated. What I want to be discussed here is your thoughts about similar topics. If you see a discussion newly posted, very similar to your topic posted long before? Because I myself finds a lot of new discussions similar to my previous posts. Not just one but a number of them. Sometimes, even a new friend post the same topic. So what will you do about this? How will you respond? Or will still respond if you know that the topic is similar or very similar to your recent discussions? Hey, wait, don't you think this is simliar to one of your discussions before? Oh no, this might get deleted too. I just hope not. Peace!

plagiarism is very subjective. if you copy the entire content of an article i think that is what plagiarism is all about. we cannot avoid posting similar topics because most of these topics are social issues that all of us experience everyday. humans are not robots wherein you can program what they think.

The #13 in question has since been removed When THIS response was #14, the one at #13 was plagiarised

Hi Plagiarism, I don't even notice this as just carry on responding but if I see a discussion exactly the same as another discussion done by a different peron, then I just skp it.Hugs. Tamara

i don't know..sometimes i do sometimes i don't.. personally i think, eventhough there are some people copycat our creations it still won't be the same. there must be a different even if it's very-very small different. and people who really respect an originality will notice if it's just a plagiarism and will still love the original art/creation from the real owner. i don't really care if there are many similar discussions in here, because how can we tell people not to post a similar like this, when there are sooooooooooo many posts in here. can we force them to check a similar posts over a hundred or more posts in mylot ? no..it's a waste of time..

I think we can make this clear if we call the plagiarist by another name - the thief that he/she actually is. Doesn't sound so high-fallutin' now, does it? When you see the effort many members put into their responses and discussion topics, it's an outrage that unscrupulous people will take their intellectual property and pass it off as their own work. I've reported people for plagiarising, and I will certainly tip off anyone whose ideas get lifted and then used by others to earn a few lousy cents. The best advice I can offer to fellow members is to be sure to develop your own distinctive 'style,' whether for Mylot responses or any other writing. This will make it so much easier for you and your friends to spot your stolen words. Thanks for initiating this, Neil.

It's actually what I wanted to do, to call it thief which is more commonly known to most people. I really don't have idea what is plagiary only after searching the web, only after hearing it from mylotters. Anyway, I think it's a good idea. Posting with our own makes our post unique from everyone. We come all from diffirent parts of the world, different races, different languages. The common among us is the English language we use on myLot. So whenever a non English member post something too English in his post, not to offend other member, he might be stealing someone's. Gracias!

When I see same topics that are totally same word for word I dont respond to it anymore. But if it is not then I respond.. I think its not the poster's fault if the topic he/she is openning same as old post. Specially if they are new.

Yes, we do find a number of discussions similar to the one which we may have already responded to, but actually we may have a different opinion about the topic so try to respond to it again. It is not always the discussion is exactly 100% same as the previous one. Even the thoughts of the person who has started the discussion may vary a little only the concept is same, so viewing it from a different angle and responding to it is agreeable I feel.

I like your thoughts about similar discussions. People have different opinions and experiences too. So it is fine for us to respond to them. But we really have to be very careful also, with responses which is too similar with the one posted at #13 of this discussion. That is a hundred percent "plagiary", don't you think?

I do not like plagiarism, plagiarism is not not a good thing. No There should be a system to prevent copying.

We know that, but as far as I know, mylot has no system like that so far. myLot says that they need our eyes and ears to help them, so we just have to report whenever we see violations, like copying of posts, etc...

I have made post that were similar and wasn't aware of it. Searching previous post in order not to is a tedious task as it causes a lot of reading through past topics. I rarely post new topics and usually respond to others. It doesn't bother me if someone starts another thread of the same. I have bigger fish to fry so to speak.

Hi Neil, Yes, I noticed that too. I remember I started a discussion entitled "how do you see yourself 5 years from now?" and only after I posted it did I know that there were similar discussions prior to mine. And then a week later I saw another discussion with almost the same title, just rephrased. Mine and that latter discussion got very few responses, so maybe it tells how members here generally respond to a discussion that has already been posted. I wonder too - it's difficult to come up with an "original" topic, maybe what we can do add some twist that will make it a little different from the previous ones. Even that is not as easy, I should say. It depends, I still respond if the topic interests me, even when it's been discussed before. This site has been here for a long time and for sure, all the interesting topics have been thrown at some point. Just a thought, some personal experiences/anecdotes are those that will qualify as original, what say you? Hope you have a good day!

Personal experiences would be fine, as long as you will not reveal your personal datas. Last year, my topics were usually about my personal experiences, with my wife, my kids, etc. If you have time, I invite you to take a look at my recent discussions.

Hello neil, I do remember replying to same discussion,it's becoz in the first place i can't totally remember that i already replied to one of it's kind before. Then, after sometime i again read same topic, that's the time that i can remember that i already responded to same topics. Same topic cannot be avoided due to new members who posted discussions not aware that it is being posted before. Just like me,when i posted the one topic and upload it,till then i will find out that there are related same topics posted previously.

Or maybe, that said tooic got stocked in our mind when we responded. Later on, we thought of starting a new discussion, and at the back of our mind was that topic, so unconciously, we made it. But not copying, word for word, which is already stealing.

Whenever i see topic that somehow is the same with mine, i used to respond to that topic and starts with the phrase "i have the same topic as yours..hehe" then i start responding them objectively..I know, it was never their intention to make a same topic as mine, they just somehow thinks of topics that seems to be interesting not knowing that someone might already post that topic..but, its not that really the same, maybe the idea is the same, but if we read the entire discussion, we will find differences inside, unless someone really copied somebodies work, which will exasperates the owner..

I also do that sometimes. I go with my respond first and then I give my link as PS so he can have an option to look at mine. Thereby, my post can also get a new life if he ever decides to respond to it.

In most cases, none of those who post their topics here are aware that its been written before for discussion. So this should answer a part of your question. The second point is that no one is asking you to post a response unless you want to. Its not mandatory that you have to answer all the posts that you see. The third point is that no one tries to copy another work intentionallt, which leads to plagiarism. This is a social network, and each one of us here may have similar problems or questions which like to share of get opinion on. So, the idea to plagiarize does become irrelevant.
