What would you do if you found a tiny kitten?

I found a tiny little kitten a couple of weeks ago, it was 3am, I was trying to sleep, and all I could hear was this tiny high pitched mewling, right under my apartment window. I left it all night, but didnt sleep. First thing in the morning I went out and there was the tiniest little thing, no mum and looking terrified. Anyway, long story short, I took it to the vet and she said it was probably only 4 weeks old. Well little "chupito" is doing just fine now, is friends with all three dogs, who adore him (I think its a him) and he has fallen in love with my very feral cat Zippy, so Zips now has himself a chum. Wish I could include a pic, but my cameras not working. Well? What would you do if you found a four week old kitten? Would you be able to keep it? If you couldnt, what would you do?

You need to try and find the owner first try contacting the cat centres then if that fails and you cannot find the owners. You can either keep it or give it to a cat centre. You need to try and find the owners first though because they might be very upset.

I agree entiresly but not in this country, there are feral cats everywhere and every Brit who lives here takes in 8 to 10 cats within their first two years. Ive gone through 9 cats so far. They get poisoned, trapped, shot - its not a nice country for cats. I guarantee this one was probably dumped by some idiot Spanish or Gypsy who couldnt be bothered to do anything else with it. There are no cat shelters here and your hard pushed to get anyone to help with a stray dog either. Thanks for you very sensible answer though, I wish you could come over here and sort this lot out.

I forgot to mention, they dont bother with spaying their animals here, they let them give birth then dump the babies.

I wouldn't be able to keep it because i am allergic to cats but i would definitely take it to the animal shelter.

Its a shame you are allergic, because you care and if you didnt have that problem, you would be able to ensure a couple or so lives were better because of you. Taking it to the shelter is, of course, the best action you could take. Thanks for replying and keep caring

Jool - taken the night we got her
we were given a 3 week old last week and she's just started eating solid foods, not interested in the kitten milk without the bottle, but drinking water some too she's 4 weeks now, but I don't have a current pix -

I'm hoping we can find her a good home, like we did the other bottle babies in 07, we just have too many now - and I peeked, but the vet pretty much confirmed it

We have one such cat. The litter was found under a house. They had been abandoned by the mother and they are so tiny they had to be bottle fed. My daughter is a vet tech and the kittens were distributed for care among the staff. She took hers back and forth to work, or we baby sat if she couldn't take her for that day. When "Kiddoe" got a bit older we took her in permanently. She's a beautiful dark gray and the only thing wrong with her is the very tip her tail has no fur because of ring worms she had when she was found. At one point we had her brother who was the runt of the litter. Kiddoe was small, but he was teeny tiny. Both cats are doing fine and the runt is now twice the size of his sister. He lives with one of the vets.

Oh well done, an entire litter? Shame! This does happen here, but usually they are dumped by people who cant be bothered doing anything else with them. Its heartwarming to know that there ARE caring people out there, give Kiddoe a kiss for me and thanks for responding.

hi ritz I would feed it, then I would have to find a home for it as if I kept it here it would make my rent go much higher, but I would find someone who could afford a kitten and who would really love her and take good care of her. some here have money to spare so could afford the kitten then there are some home owners on this street. I would find a home for the kitten.

Well done Hatley, at least you would try to take responsibility for it and make sure it got somewhere safe and caring to live. Thanks for your response.

Hey Ritz! Good for you for taking in the little kitty! I always want to take in every stray that I see, but I have two 5 year old cats that are very territorial and know that they would have a problem with it! I still think that if I saw one like you described I would have to take it in and take it to the vet and hope that Star & Luna would accept it as their brother/sister! I just hate to see any baby left alone outside ever!

You know, I didnt even question whether I was going to keep it. Im such a mug for helpless causes, probably because I am one. Im sure Star and Luna would accept a baby. Babies give off a smell that says "dont hurt me Im a baby", nature seems to take care of itself somehow. Thanks for responding, you do care, I can tell!

Hi Ritz, I love little kitten as well. It’s really adorable. I would like to keep it as my pet if I have considerable time to take good care of it. I did keep cats and other animals as pet before. My neighbor is a cat lover as well. She keeps a few cats at the moment. I definitely will pass the little kitten to her if I were to come across any. I believe the little sweet kitten will grow up happily together with her other cats as well Happy posting

Yeah Ritz. She is really a great freak of cat. I was told that one of her mother cats gave birth to 3 adorable baby kittens recently. She looked so happy. Her face expression looked so pleasant and amiable! Seemed like she had becoming a granny Yeah, I'm glad Have a nice day!

I am an animal lover, everyone in my family is. I do come by this naturally as my parents and grandparents are as well. I have found many dogs and cats and taken them home after finding out that they are abandoned. I adopt them and care for them. They become part of the family. If I had heard a kitten in the night, I would have gotten up and checked it out. My thoughts would have been what if they poor little thing was caught in something and could not get out or what if it was injured and needed help? At any rate i would not have been able to sleep until; I went and checked it out. Finding a lone little kitten in an apartment complex I would have put up a notice about the little baby to see if someone claimed it. I would in the mean time take care of the little one. Of course all the while getting attached to it. One time my children where walking behind the grocery store and the man was delivering some things he did not see the mama kitty and the babies staying under the pallets he moved them and killed the mama and all of the babies but one that had wondered away from the rest. My children picked him up and brought him home. From his size and things about him I figured him to be about 3 weeks old. We had a large dog and we sat him inside the dogs bowl of food and he just went away eating his food, lol. Our dog just tilted her her looking at this tiny little might eating her food and inside her bowl. It was the funniest sight. I took him to the vet and got milk for him. I also got some food for him and toys to play with. He turned out to be huge and the love of the family.

I'm so sorry that you are in a place that they have so little reguard for kittens. It makes me sad the way people can be with animals and they way they do them. Yes, the picture is of my rotti, Ninja...he is my baby. My German Rottweiler hat weights 150 pounds and thinks he is a little boy, lol. He will turn around and back up to sit in our lap. He is the third rotti I have hd also. I hve 3 miniature pinchures as well. They are a breed of their own and not a spin off of the large pinchures that you know of. I had another one but he was stolen. I see that you have a handsome little precious baby. I could not live without having babies around me. I'm just that way.

I just want to clarify that the apartment I lived in was not in a complex, it was on a Spanish street facing wasteland (and I MEAN wasteland), the sort of place typically that Spanish dump animals onto. So there was no one to ask, no one here cares about a little kitten outside, in fact its that bad here that I have seen Spanish lorry drivers swerve to HIT and squash a cat, they dont care. Anyway, just wanted you to know that no one had lost this kitten, it had been dumped. So glad that you took in that little orphan kitten though, and that your dog took to him so well. BTW, is that a rottie in the pic, my favourite breed, Ive had three in my lifetime, all darlings and lovable as hell!

Great story Ritz. It probably won't be long before little "chupito" is letting your dogs know who is their new boss. I took a kitten from a neighbor who was on the way to drown it. Well, the very unsociable "Rambo" and I were best mates for about seventeen years. Thanks for the memory of my departed mate.

I can see what you mean about crying with laughter. Don't worry about reminding me about 'Rambo,' I have overcome the loss, but there are still many priceless memories that spring to mind.

You are spot on with the "chupito showing the dogs whos boss". I wish I had a video camera, the kitten was seriously beating up my small black dog, Jack, this morning. I live alone(except for the animals of course) and I was laughing so much I was crying, Im sure my neighbours think Im a loony tunes. LOL Sorry to remind you of a loss though, but isnt it funny how time makes the memories fond and no longer painful?

I would do exactly what you did. Most of my pets throughout my life have been strays that I have taken in. My dad used to tell me if a stray was in a one mile radius of me, it would find its way to me. One of the cats that I have now showed up in my driveway, looking pretty beat up. I took her in without a second thought. My other cat (that I have had for over 15 years, didn't like her at first, but now they are friends.

I would definitely keep it. I do that with every stray animal I find. I have three adopted dogs, one of which I found in a similar situation. She was five or six weeks old, sitting on my front walk, whining pathetically early one morning, and I kept her, fed her, pinned her up on my back deck. I later tried to find if she belonged to someone, and after being unsuccessful, I kept her. I still have her today and she is an excellent dog. Best friends with my other two dogs and anyone who walks into the house! Haha. She is very smart and very friendly. And best of all, I didn't have to pay for her, ha. I also have a cat I rescued in a similar way named Jake. Good luck with your new kitten!

Well you are much like me then. I also have three rescue dogs, all found on the streets here in Spain, and only two cats now, as I have lost quite a few over the last 2 years. In total, since I moved over here from the UK, I have rescued and rehomed 50 animals, one of them being a baby chicken that got blown into my yard during a tornado!! That was something else! Keep up the good work, I am sad that I cant do more over here, but the numbers are too great for one person to take it all on.

A baby chicken? That's quite the story... I will definitely keep up this work, probably for as long as live, because you're right - it's too much for one person. But if we all do our part, then it doesn't have to all be the work of one person. You keep up the good work too.

awww!! I love kittys :) I would keep it in my house first of all. then i would put up posters saying "found kitten" and if no one claimed it I would either keep it or give it to some one who would take care of it.

I dont think Ive ever seen a "found Kitten" poster in Spain, they dont seem to care. Great idea in the right country, but if a kitten is found here, its usually dumped, thats why I had to take it in, no choice really. Thanks for your response.

Hiya Ritz..I'm a sucker for tiny kittens so I would be taking him/her in and bottle-feeding it till old enough to eat solid food. By then, I'll be so dang attached to the lil' critter that I wouldn't be giving him/her up. lol Don't think Zippy will be letting you find the lil' one a new home either. He's got himself a friend and would prolly smack you to bits if you even thought of finding his buddy a new home. lol

aww:) well,i'd bring it inside and put it in my room where it would be safe (i have 3 older cats)look for the mom,and then go get some kitten formula.if it did not seem ill,as soon as it got some food in it i'd take it to the vet for a checkup. i would keep it though.3 cats,4 cats..what's the difference? i would wait til it was a bit older to introduce it to the older cats, just to be safe.my calico is a bit punchy.

Very sensible about the keeping it away from the older cats, also you dont know what it might be carrying and you wouldnt want to infect the others. A short incubation period is always sensible.

I'd do what I always do. Kitten or grown cat, I'd take it in, & if I couldn't find a home for it, I'd keep it. I don't care if it breaks the rules, I'd still keep it, love it, & make it forget all about the harsh streets. Maggiepie "WHERE'S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?"

I've never gotten into trouble, but I wouldn't care even if I did. To me, the helpless animal comes first, damn the consequences. One time I was at a friend's. She lived in a complex, & her apartment was being sprayed for bugs, so we were outside, in the warm sun, breathing good air. There was a crowd of people around the pool area, & I saw this teeny yellow tabby kitten totter up to the edge of the pool. She was trying desperately to stretch her neck out long enough to take a lap of (ugh) pool water, & trying not to fall in. I walked over to her & picked her up. She instantly began to purr. The poor little thing was covered with fleas, & had a dog's flea collar wrapped around her neck twice, which of course is deadly for cats (& she was already suffering from a discharge because of it), let along thirsty young kittens! I took a look around the area & loudly declared, "I don't care who thinks they own this kitten, she's MINE, now!" Maybe no-one there did, but no-one objected either. Maybe they were glad to be rid of her, or maybe they were simply ashamed at having taken such poor care of her. But I was ready to fight to keep this kitten, & make her happy & healthy. I did, too. I named her Leontyne Priceless, Tina for short. (Opera fans will recognize the reference...Hee) She was one of the sweetest, funniest & lovingest kitties I've ever known. I still miss her. I'm a sucker for hard-luck cases, so even though I don't really care for cats in general, I'd most likely take it in until I could find its owner. If I couldn't find it, the poor thing would likely have a home with me for the rest of its life unless I was lucky enough to rehome it. I have a really hard time turning down an animal in need. In this house, we have 2 rescued dogs, one cat, 4 guinea pigs and 2 hamsters all from the shelter or bad situations. People being irresponsible and not spaying and neutering their pets is such a huge problem globally, and a really sad one at that.
