I am trying to start running on a regular basis. I have never run, but have been physically fit for most of my life. I have walked in two 5K's recently, but really would like to begin to run in them. Any suggestions on how to start a training program?

I wish I had seen this sooner!! I would definitely recommend visiting runner's world (they have a website) for any running information. Especially in your case - you're a walker that wants to start running.
My one piece of advice though - is to just do it. Just get up and start running. After a good 5 minute warm up - just slow take off from walking to start your run. And remember to "train, don't strain."
Good luck!
Running is very fun. Hope you get the bug - like I do! =)

the best things that you can do to start training for a 5k, are interval work, and weight lifting if you are transitioning from walking to running then the weight lifting work will help better prepare your muscles for the added stress that running will put on them. combine this with nutrition and your all set. the interval work is most important because studies have shown that high intensity intervals are as effective and more for increasing VO2 max and other forms of aerobic capacity in a shorter amount of time.
