i find myself planning ahead. i used just to plan what i am going for the day only and not for the whole week. but since i am on a budget , i do need to plan what are the things i will need for the whole week and what i may cook, so that i have my plans laid out already. hopefully i could follow them. so that i can save a lot of money. all those foods i am planning to cook are healthy and cheap and still delicious to eat. but less in protein though. i hope i won't feel weak since it will cut on protein a lot and more on fiber.

i envy your plan and goal. in my case, i do not do this. i usually go to the market and grocery and get what i want for the day or next days ahead. i never have any plan for the week. since my place is near the market, i can always go there and follow my cravings for certain food. i am happier this way. but you are right, i am not saving that much. i think i need to change somehow. thanks for the discussion.

You are right. I used to stock grocery items for a week. But it spoils immediately and you end up trashing them. What a waste of money? So it is better that you buy groceries that would last for 2 to 3 days. In that way you would be able to consume everything and it would not turn into waste.

i just don't know. i am the person that hates seeing so many stocks on my cabinet. i want it clean and want to see things i am sure i will need. i like throwing things. i hate so many mess in my ref and cabinets and drawers. i do usually check my ref every day. sometimes more than once a day of things to throw out and things to stay

No I don't plan meals out for the whole week, but I really should, it would probably save me a lot of money. I need to go through my canned goods and my frozen food and finish up what is in there. I am planning on sitting down and doing that so I can probably plan out 1 or 2 weeks worth of meals ahead of time. The only day I do plan out every week is Tuesday. We have taco Tuesday every Tuesday.

i think that the way it is in US. people buy in bulk. but here people can do that too specially if they have their own car. but owning car is not that popular. cause we can go out without buying our own car. people mostly travel by public transportation. i do prefer to buy twice or thrice a week. cause i wanted to go out often so i won't get bored at home. so many people don't buy in bulk. i hate it buying in bulk cause i have don't enough cabinet to put all those grocery for the week. i only buy up to what my cabinet can hold.

It is my wife who does the planning. But usually she does the planning 1 or two days before. In other words its somewhat a day or two days before. Not on a weekly basis. But we do have supplies in the refrigerator which usually use could go for 3-4 days more.

You certainly have a point there with respect to bacteria. I was not able to consider this until you pointed it out in your post. Well, I guess shopping for supplies good for two to three days will give us the benefit of having fresher supplies than having old stock in the ref.

yes mostly, in our country the philippines, most people just plan to have 4 day supply and not a week supply. that is wise thing to do specially for fresh meat and fish. it is not good to have them in the ref for long period of time. mostly i wanted meat and fish to stay on the ref for until 4 days only then cook them. cause bacteria may grow on them if they are stored in longer period of time. and we need maintain a certain temperature to make sure they are stored well and that will cost me high electricity bill. so since groceries are not so far here. i just buy fresh products for two day supply.

yes that is true. if there is bacterial growth in our frozen food, when we cooked it, it can't kill the bacteria by cooking, and it will cause to have cold mostly. and point to remember store meat and fishes that they will be freezing cold that it will be crystal ice. solid and freezing. when you defrost the food and they softened a little, it is better to cook them and not freeze them again. cause most filipino when they will take a portion of meat , they will defrost the ref. when it has defrosted a bit and they can take some part of meat from the freezer, the other part which is not to be cooked will be frozen again. that is not safe. better to separate them in small portions with separate plastic each so that when you need smaller amount meat, you will get it by portion and don't need to defrost the whole meat.

That is a new thing because I can understand about flour, rice and pulses but vegetables!
I use to buy vegetables every day to cook. I dont' own a refridgarator and hence have to buy them everyday otherwise they will be rotten in two or three days, isn't it?

sometimes i just want to turn off my ref to save some money or from electricity bill. but i will miss drinking cold water if i don't use the ref. do you only buy vegetables don't you buy any meat. but i think it is quite hard to be going out every day to buy food. but i don't think vegetables rot very fast.

Lately I havent but I realize it saves sooo much money if you plan ahead and stick to your plan. This is also a huge part in eating healthy and losing weight or maintaining your weight. I do it on Sundays. Sundays I plan everything out then go buy all the stuff and make sure I'm totally set up for the week. Then its no excuses not to stick to it!
Side note a cheap form of GREAT protein is in beans. Chili, soup or whatever the beans have a lot of protein and lentils have fantastic amount of protien in just one cup. They cost like 1 dollar for a big bag of fresh ones or 1 can of them.

yeah i forgot about beans as good source of protein. and so i think that i am safe cause i have just eaten beans just now. and it is my list of what to cook each week and so i am not to worry not having enough protein. anyways, i am trying to keep a note of whatever is healthy and delicious and cheap to do. and my list is just starting. mostly they are just written on my mind. i need to have it written on paper soon too.

I guess I do plan ahead, I just never thought of it that way before. When I am cooking (which I do as infrequently as possible)I do plan multiple meals from one cooking period. For example, let's say I have an urge to cook spaghetti and meatsauce. At the same time, I will cook lasagna, chili, cabbage rolls, and so on. The extras i freeze in one serving container and simply thaw and heat for an easy meal.
Doing it that way reduces the time I have to have run the oven, and let's me have many "cooking free" meals for days/weeks to come.

yeah that is another way to do it to save time and have every thing prepared. i do that too . but now i generally cook only what i will just eat and don't cook more than what i plan to eat at the moment.

No. We're usually very spontaneous about creating our meals. We save money simply by buying a certain number of veggies, cooking ingredients, and meats every week based on whatever we still have at home, and whatever's cheapest...and it's up to us to do something with that selection for the next two weeks.

yeah it is good not to plan too much but i am better in planning than just thinking what to cook only when we are about to cook. but sometimes i can spontaneous but it rarely happens.

We do our grocery shopping every 2 weeks. To save money I make a grocery list that I try to stick to strictly. I write M, T, W..etc down the side of the page. We pick stuff we want to have for dinner and write it by those days. Then I write whatever groceries I need to make those things. It usually helps to keep from buying anything extra that we won't really eat. If I put something say on Monday, we don't have to eat it on that day if it isn't something we are in the mood for.

yeah. since we hate to eat the same food every day. planning ahead the things that we wanted to eat is good idea. but since i am not on this habit before. that i am just starting to do this. i am not that good. i hope that in time i have more food or list that i can add on my menu so that i can have better food prepared on my table.

oh yes. like we cook this certain food. but we didn't like the taste and so many left over. we would think what do with it like we add scrambled eggs and make it into fried food from something different. and so it tastes better after we added some changes into it.

Yours is a very good idea. I should follow it since latelly I have been spending more than I should or have in groceries.
But I don´t think less protein is terrible. I have read that all you need in a day is about 2 dices of meat. When I read it, I couldn´t believe it. We are acostumed to fill ourselves with sateaks, but that´s what our body needs.
I remember that when I read that, I started making a lot more dishes with ground meat. I made sauces with a little bit (comparatibly) of ground meat, plus other things and I could eat a wonderful lasagne, a moussaka, a pie.
Eggs and milk are also good sources of protein. For dips, I started using plain yogourt with chives.
Now I can do a delicious omelette out of practically anything. That has protein and I put in all leftovers I see around.

i like yogurt as dipping. but it is expensive and so i don't buy it often. i avoid meat cause it is quite fattening. and so i may stick with some eggs a week. though i don't know if it is still true that we should limit our egg consumption of 3 eggs a week. but some reports said it is safer to ear more.and i am quite confused which to believe actually but eggs for omelet for different left overs are quite good and will save us a lot of money. that is what i am planning to do if it is only safe to use or consume more eggs in a week.

Hi Hotsummer,
I do my cooking when my mother-in-law is not at home.
I always plan one day ahead of the food to cook for the next day start from lunch till dinner. I will make sure the ingredients are available in the fridge.
Normally , I will go to wet market once a week to buy some vegetables, meat and fruits for my family.I never do up a list, but I always have in mind what vegetables to buy for the day.
I always try to cook different kind of dishes throughout the whole week,or else, it will be bored eating the same dishes all the time.

yeah the important thing is not forget any ingredients when you buy groceries. it will such a big hassle.i do make list of groceries. sometimes i forget to buy some thing even if they are already on the list. and it is really irritating to realize i forgot one important ingredient so i can go on to my plan. i will have to delay cooking that and instead to switch that on the next menu and do first plan on the next day when i have already both the missing ingredient for that.

I do try to plan out a week ahead of time what we are going to eat for the next week. I've found that doing it this way saves a lot of time and money because I am able to go to the grocery store just one time and get everything that I am going to need for that week as opposed to having to make lots of small runs to the grocery store.
When I plan out what we are going to eat for the week, I don't plan on which day we are going to eat what, I just plan what meals we will have during that week. That way if one thing sounds good on Monday then I can cook it, but if another thing, sounds good on Tuesday I can cook that. I just know I have to stick with the foods that I had planned for the week.

oh, that is good . you don't really plan what you are going to eat on that particular day but for what you are supposedly to eat for the whole week. when i do plan though i just have this vision of what i want to eat from monday to sunday. ha ha. and so i would most probably do what is according to my plan. i have particular recipe for each day. i may change from time to time but generally what was planned is to be followed. i will start with the food that i miss the most and the food i least miss the most would be on the last day of the week. like i have an appetite to chicken than fish then it will be the first on the list.

Yes I always try to plan out the meals I make for the week. Otherwise, when I get to the store I end up forgetting things or end up not having enough food to cook for the week. I don't plan what day I eat what but I know what foods I have available and can decide that day what I'm in the mood to make.

i don't read flyers as many items on sale on the flyers are not the items i do plan to buy. specially i don't eat meat now . anyways, thankfully there are more big groceries near my place. before i have to go the big malls to buy groceries. but now big groceries has set their business near residential areas. and so basically they are just walking distance from my place. and it is easier to buy in groceries. i don't need to buy in bulk.

I do plan ahead and I make a list. My daughter and I work on it together & then head to the grocery store. The hardest part is sticking right to the list. Occassionally we do find something on sale and change up our minds while in the store. Still, you do save if you only make one trip to the store. I know that I've run out for a forgotten item and I never get just that one item. There is always something else that catches my eye.

yeah it is not easy to stick to the list sometimes i wll have the craving for certain food and don't want to continue to cook on what is on my plan or list. but i try to stick with my budget though i may change my list all of sudden because of desire other food.

I have long been thinking that this is a good idea. You plan ahead so that you will not lose time thinking of what to cook for the day. But here, sometimes, members of the family would oppose the menu for the week. So what we do know is just a day to day basis. What one feel for the day is that we cook for the day.

that is the hardest part when every one has different preference on the food to it. like my sister here want meat and does not vegetables and i want vegetables and so she cook her own food and eat them. i prepare my vegetable salads and some fish . but still i am able to stick on my budget cause the vegetable is cheaper than meat and also i buy vegetable that is cheap on the market i will avoid the vegetable which are not in season and so the high price of that vegetable.

To hotsummer this is checkmail and often do think of planning for an weeks cooking
schedule but just doesn't make it.Mine too the budget is imp thing
for me but its fluctuating in nature and also i prefer fresh and
avail things to cook.So i just plan for the current meal or a day or
two days cooking.I tried several times to ge the schedule right but
someting comes up and have to cancell it.And so .............

i generally don't a lot. cause i learned that most of the few items i buy last longer than i expected most of the time. and so i save a lot but not throwing any thing out cause every thing is not in excess and i buy only those i can consume.

I do plan ahead but its hard to stick to that plan. I dont like to eat canned food and so i plan to go to the grocery every week,to buy fresh vegetables and fruits. So most of the times i have a plan in my mind of what things i will make during the week. This helps me to remain on a healthy diet and encourages me to make different variety of things everyday.

yeah canned goods is a big no no for me cause it is not healthy and can even can cause cancer if we eat too much canned foods. i do open some canned canned goods like canned pimientos and not actually the foods itself. only those i add to my food that i am going to cook. i love cooking cause when it is freshly cooked it taste different and last longer and i can cook according to my taste preference it is good to cook also to make myself busy as long i have the ingredients. as long as i have the money.
