In hardware processor and RAM make PC faster. Make sure you all PC components synchronized well with each other.
In software you can use Tuneup software which manage you PC unnecessary storage as well as registry and defacement you PC. It may possible you anti-virus can make you PC slower so read carefully it hardware requirement before user any anti-virus.

Ample03 has given enough tricks so speed up your pc. I just wanted to add some specific bonus tricks to gain some more performance out of your personal computer.
1- If you're using a Windows computer, and if it is a Vista, try to increase your ram. BUT, most of the modern motherboards have a so called "Dual channel ram slots". Meaning, on the motherboard, if there are 4 slots for ram exists, two of them are the same color. 2 red, and the other 2 black or yellow for intance. You MUST mount your rams to the "same colored" slots in order to take advante of dual channel systems. BUT (too many buts yes I know), those rams you are going to use must exactly be the same capacity, model, brand etc. That's why some rams are being sold as "Kit". If you have already a ram lets say 1gb, either you must find the excat partner of it, or you need to buy a brand new kit (2x the same ram) and forget your older one. Sell it or keep it in your old tech box :)
2- The capacity of the rams do increase your performance but they have a speed spec also. According to your motherboards specs, you need to choose the possible highest speedy ram, but as you may guess, prices jump as rams get quicker in specs.
3- An other tip of the day is using a blank background. Do not use picture in the background. You may want a joyful workspace with a picture of your loved ones in the background but you are sacrificing your performance.
4- These tips do not apply alone. Also take other contributers' advise, faster cpu (if you don't have to change your motherboard, it's a good option), deleting your temp files regulary and making disk defragmantation etc...

Obviously, the processor and memory are the main contributors to determining how fast a computer is.
To complement that speed you need to have the right software maintenance tools to regularly check your system for optimization. I personally use CCleaner to "clean" my desktop, and Diskeeper to silently defragment my drives in realtime.

RAM and processor are the most important hardware component along with high quality motherboard and a high storage hard disk to make a fast computer.
If you have loaded with all these hardware components, then some tricks using your Operating systems and softwares can make a computer with jet speed.
Let us talk about some tips to run a computer at amazing speed.
1 Do not install garbage softwares, if you do not know whether the softwares are no more useful, uninstall them.
2 Always use system cleaner or CCcleaner software to remove .tmp files, to find and fix registry errors, to delete temporary internet files and cache.
3 Keep your Antivirus updated, viruses can clog your speed.
4 Give as much as space to your OS partition.
5 Scan and Defrag your Hard disks at least once in a month.

Both items makes a computer fast. If you're a gamer (serious gamer I mean) then nearly every hardware counts into constructing a fast computer. The major components that makes a computer lightning speed would be the processor & the ram. Then comes the hard disk drive & graphic card. A good (and fast) hard disk drive should deliver the best read & write speed. Eventhough 5400rpm is OK, try to always use at least 7200rpm hard disk drives. A fast processor, ram, hdd & graphic card should also work inline with a good motherboard. It's no use when you own a SATA2 HDD but your mobo only supports the old SATA standard. The same goes for ram too. Try to find a mobo that supports your ram at its rated speed or more. For example, a 800MHz ddr2 should match with a mobo that is able to support 800MHz ddr2.
In terms of software, there is no magic software that can make your computer runs fast. However you can make your computer runs smooth by using utilities that can clean up the registries such as CCleaner. In addition, defrag your drive at least once a week. You can also increase startup times by removing unwanted software from the startup by typing "msconfig" (without the quote) in the run menu.
Happy trying & myLotting!

yeappp...
my hardware computer
pentium D 3Ghz, 1GB ram, VGA Nvidia 8500GT with intel Mainboard.
To keep it fast, never install software that you never know it is use to be. And uninstall all software that you never use anymore, always update antivirus if you always surfing with your PC, and don't forget to defrag all of your harddisk drive.

I do own a personal computer, and it isn't the fastest computer, but runs smoothly for a old Microsoft Xp Professional. I have a MS Windows Xp Professional SP3, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+, 958Mb of ram, and a NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE
I used CCleaner to clean out junk, Defraggler to defragment my hard drive, and MalwareBytes AntiMalware. Best of luck, and have a good day!
