Hi Jugsjugs,
I think some people has get used to louder voice when watching TV.they don't have the problem with hearing, but they just want to up the volume till so high.
For me, I always set at medium level,I don't like a loud voice.Too noisy and it makes me feel headache too.

I think you answered you own question here, but I would add that it is also because they are unaware that devices can be purchased to help them be more discreet, or they are in denial, or they are too stingy to invest the money. I started to say too poor, but anyone that poor should not be wasting electricity watching tv. All they have to do is get inexpensive speakers and move them closer to their ears. They don't have to be fancy wireless speakers, although ones with a volume control are nice.
It is hard for me to imagine that they don't realize they are driving everyone else up the wall.

I think most of the time they have the t.v. up as loud as they need it to be to hear, maybe they can hear it at a very very very high volume. Though they have devices now that you can put in your ear and be able to hear something from a few feet away, so they could always use those, if they don't use a hearing aid themselves.

I had a problem like that when my brother was living with me for 4 months last year. I swear he has to have a hearing problem. I questioned him about it and he says his hearing is fine. I don't think so. I could hear the TV loud and clear to my bedroom with the door closed. All I can say its because these people have a hearing problem and they don't know it or want to face it.

Ha ha! I find this particular true of elderly men. I think they are hard of hearing and the volumn has slowly been going up all these years . . . yes, to the point where it keeps everyone else up! I noticed my husband's volumn number on the tv set has been going up - and I remind him of that - and that he's going to be just like his dad someday (one of those that the next street can hear). Sometimes I think people turn up the tv to tune out the rest of the world!

I am not sure either but it gets on my nerves also. My husband has a hearing problem and we have to have our tv up where he can hear it but it gets on my nerves. I turn it down a little bit because I cannot hear myself think sometimes.

Maybe they are telling everyone around them “hey people we have television” lol. I am sure they have problems hearing what a certain program is saying or they have ear problem. But some of the television have a low sound when you are facing it, but on the back of the television the sound is so loud. We do have that kind before and we are not aware of the sound we were making on the neighborhood. It depends on the tv or on the attitude of the person using it.

Hello jj. I think that it is a habit for them to have the TV up so loud. If the volume is low, they don't feel like it. It is probably the way when some play the music so loud for their enjoyment. I don't like to turn it up too loud. Otherwise I don't feel myself.
My father does not have a good hearing, so he turns up his radio to almost the maximum when he listens to it, which is so noisy. But anyway, we don't complain about it as my father is in his eighties with a poor hearing.

For the same reason people have their stereos up so loud! And to be able to concentrate on the full intent of the show or game. Ya, alot of it is the event. Gotta have it up loud to get the full experience. And alot of people have that surround sound and have to have it up loud to get the full experience of it.

A few reasons come to mind. First, they're hard of hearing. Second, they want to show off their new sound system. Third, they merely want to tell others that they're "king" in the neighbourhood and they don't give a damn if you complain. It's not only TV, but also audio stereo system too!

There would be no other reason for that except one involving the sense of hearing as it involves volume of the tv set. They should be hard on their hearing to do that. Otherwise, they keep the volume at an appropriate level. Or, maybe, they just have to turn volume up to clearly digest the conversation for a movie or a show, especially if the language used is not his native language. Most valid reason here is that they should have hearing defect not to notice the loud volume they are turning their tv sets to.

Move out to the country if you want to crank your TV or music really loud. If you do it and live in close proximity to other people then you're a jerk and that's all there is to it. And it's no one else's problem if you're going deaf. Stop being cheap and buy a hearing aid.
You wouldn't want to be my neighbor and behave like that. Believe me.

You have mentioned the most obvious, they have hearing difficulties. A second thought is that they just have developed that habit, thirdly, they may just live in so much commotion that they are trying to listen, and drown out the interference.

I always wondered that, too. I don't see how they can stand it, loud noises hurt my ears. Maybe their hearing is already damaged!
My ex has always been a tv junkie and he had a stereo system hooked up to it. It was a good 100 feet to the road but when he was watching the idiot box, you could easily hear it if you were standing in the road!

Hey jugs! It's probably a good thing you don't live next door
to me! There are just some things that me and my boyfriend
like listen to loud! And sometimes we don't even realize that
something is loud like when we are listening to a DVD movie!
We just get so into the movie and we don't realize how loud it
is until it goes off and we turn the tv back on and see the
difference in sound! I will tell you that when there is music
on we do crank it up! I have always loved to listen to music
loud! I am mindful if it is late at night and don't go out of
my way to disturb my neighbors, although I have some neighbors
who couldn't care less about how much they disturb us!

Some people have the habit of listening loud on the tv to have a theatre effect at home or they have an ear problem.

This is sooo funny! I was visiting my dad a couple of weeks ago. His hearing is fine. For some reason they raise the volume of the tv at night so in the morning you can be blasted out the door. I woke up before they did and turned the tv on for my kids. I thought sure we would wake them because I swear, it woke the neighbors two miles away.
