My daughter bought a 100-pc picture jigsaw puzzle for her 4 year-old son yesterday. It was in a plastic bag and without a completed picture as a guide. I told her, how on earth can your son complete the puzzle without a guide. To my surprise, her son completed it in no time. I was amazed, I ask him how did it and ask him to do it again as I watch. He grouped the pieces of similar colors and started joining them, clever, I thought. What do you think? Any similar observation?

I don't know. Maybe, becasue of the internet. You know, kids can give unexpected facts about animals, and other stuffs. Mostly, they are from the internet. But kids now, also needs skills. Because they are more into the computer, they are not a s explorative than kid before. Kids now are obese & not totally developed physically.

Yes, I really do think children are smarter now. I have a 3 year old niece who is extremely eager to learn. She already knows the alphabet and her numbers to at least 20 if not more. She can also write her letter and she can identify her name. She absolutely loves the children's books about how the human body works and she asks questions all the time about why, how etc. We take care of her 3 days a week for her mother and she never ceases to amaze me how smart she is.

True, most children nowadays are starting to read at a very early age unlike years before, when they do it much later. They really never cease to amaze us. My gradson at four can read and write both in English and Tagalog and he keeps on discovering new things. cheers!

Hi manong, It certainly does appear that children are smarter today or maybe they believe in themselves more than other generations. I had a similar situation to yours with my granddaughter. It is quite amazing what they seem to be able to do. Blessings.

kids are smarter these days. I cant believe some of the stuff my 5 year old and 1 year can do and say. For instance my 1 year old will wake up every morning and go to the pantry to get his own breakfast out. He likes bagel so i keep them on the bottom shelf so whenever he wants one he can get it. Or when he's thirsty he will bring me his cup and point to the refrigerator. When i dont move fast enough he will jsut go and get a caprisun and he opens the straw and puts it in the little whole. Or how about one day when his cup was on top of the tv, he went and got a hanger and got on his chair to knock the cup off of the tv with the hanger. And as for my five year old we just always say he's lived here before. Cause sincve he was one he's been knowing how to count ot 100, all his colors, how to spell hs name and everyone else's name in the family. And that's just the little things, i find myself sometimes having to say well excuse me when he corrects me for not saying something right.

As early as 1 year old, he is obviously exhibiting signs of trying to be responsible and independent, isn't that amazing. Yes, even the 5 year-old child now is doing what the 8 year olds used to do in my time. Times have changed. enjoy!

Children of today are intellectually different from those of yesterday. Except for people like Mozart, who was a child prodigy, the rest grew up as normal children would. Nowadays, with the advancement in science and technolgy, children grow at a rapid rate, their mental faculties develop faster. Therefore, they're able to speak, read, and solve simple problems at a much earlier age than when we were their age. So, it's hardly surprising if your 2-year-old toddler is able to say a complete sentence and spell monosyllabic words rather clearly, given parental encouragement and correct environment.

Yes, correct environment, parental encouragement coupled with the right educational toys bring out the best in a child. They tend to learn fast in all respects. The good side of technology when applied in the field of education and child development produces tangible results. enjoy!

In the hard times , we couldn't get some nutritive foods and some novel toys. But now our living standard has been highly advanced . We can give our babies enough nutritions they need and buy whatever toys they want .So their IQ must be higher then before. Accordingly they are smarter then before.

yes, proper nutrition and good educational tools play important roles in the child's mental and physical development. Toys that encourage creativity and ingenuity are not exactly that expensive nowadays although there are the expensive kinds. enjoy!

Oh yes, children are definitely more smarter today mainly because I think they are exposed to a lot more ideas and concepts and tools than we were. A child’s brain is in the developmental stage and the more information you store there, the more it process and works on it. So there’s no end really to how much a child’s brain and take in and work on that. Its amazing really but it’s the truth and the results are there for all of us to see.

I agree. Given the right educational tools and the right environment, a child will really excel in his own level. There is no limit to one's creativity and ingenuity and this is obvious even at a very early age. enjoy!

Yes Manong, children do surprise us sometimes. Wise mothers buy their babies educational toys which teach them colours and shapes and teach them to match. My 5 year old granddaughter surprised me by completing a 1000 piece jig saw, map of the world. She had a little help from her 9 year old sister, but did most of it herself. I love doing difficult jig saws when I have time, which isn't very often. If a jig saw is too easy, I complete it face down - no picture.

I find it difficult to complete a jigsaw puzzle even with a picture as a guide, how on earth can I do it face down. You must be extremely good at it cloudwatcher. Isn't that something!

I have a 3 year old granddaughter that I know is alot smarter then I was 53 years ago and smarter then her own mom back 28 years ago. I believe it has alot to do with evolution. My granddaughter at 3 can put puzzles together just like that too. In fact she received a wooden puzzle which was a hot air balloon. She was able to put it together before the grownups. We were all in shock. She can count to 100, knows her alphabet and talks like she is 10 years old already. So yes to answer your question I believe alot of kids today are smarter then ever.

Hi manong! I think all children (even toddlers) have the potential to become very smart when they were born (in that case, that includes us coz we were all children once heheheh!) I guess it depends on how exposed the child is to learning. Before, people don't have much TVs or stereos with so many nursery rhymes or even books. Nowadays, children are not only exposed to TVs, nursery rhymes, or books but also computers. Plus, have you noticed their toys? Most children's toys nowadays are super cool and also robotic with sound effects and stuff. I guess that's where they get their learning. Plus of course, with the help of the parents ;) I've read in a magazine that it's never too early to read a book to your child that even if the baby is still in the womb he/she can already recognize the sound of our voice and stuff :) I've seen a 4-year old kid play the piano expertly in youtube. And that same kid can sing so many religious songs when she was still 2-years old! I also have a friend whose 2-year old daughter can sing "Way Back into Love" like a grown-up :) So I guess it depends on how the parents are actively exposing their kids to learning, and also how they are encouraging their kids to learn :)

Yes, young children nowadays are exposed to good learning toys and tools at the same time. These toys enhance the children's creativity and ingenuity even at an early age. I believe that children watching other children perform on TV are also encouraged to do the same. This is a good case where technology is put to a better use especially in the field of education and child development. cheers veronizm!

As early as prep they are taught how to factor numbers and decimal values, unbelievable. Sometimes I even think that their brains are streched too much but the kids don't mind anyway, they seem to enjoy.

Cleaver maybe, but smarter? I don't think so. My grandpa used to tell me that if he only had graduated his elementary school, he would be the lead foreman of the construction of the underpass on some of the major roads in Recto and Quiapo way back in the 50's. Yes, he was beaten by one of his friend who happened to be graduated in elementary and knows how to read the design plans. Several of my teachers way back in high school too are very good and they only finished high school. And I remember my teacher in grade four who happens to be very old already at that time and she was just an elementary graduate. Children of today maybe clever but our old folks are smarter than we think.

You have a good point there Fulltank, there are only different avenues to express their abilities. The level of English of some older folks are much better than today's youth in many respects. Children today have many gadgets aside from computers where they can express their creativity and ingenuity. enjoy!

They're smarter I think because of the amount of information there is available and plus they have more means to exercise their brain cells with the puzzles games and all that.

hi manong oh kids will really surprise you with jigsaw puzzles. they go by the colors and the shapes of the pieces, unlike us older people the kids think outside the bus, they have no perceived ideas so they just do what they think will work and by golly it does.he he

I think that children are becoming more inteligent in some areas but not all of them. In my opinion, they are extremely keen on visual exercises, that requires a kind of "visual inteligence". However, i think they are becoming less inteligent when it takes to write and to do Maths exercises and so on. This must be because of the different hobbies nowadays: less books and more audiovisual material. What do you think about it? Best wishes

Ive noticed that the older you get, the smarter the generation before you gets. I think this is due to what the schools are starting to teach younger and younger kids. When i was in 6th grade we wer expected to only reach spanish level 1 by 8th grade. Now i know that the same 6th graders from when i was in 8th grade can take all the way up to spanish 3. This may have nothing to do with puzzles but i think that kids are gradually becoming smarter and smarter. Ive seen other courses that have done the same thing, such as math. This sometimes makes me angry that i was not given the same opportunity.

Children are most definitely smarter nowadays. As generations grow by our offspring must evolve to face the rapidly changing world. It's become so competitive that in any examination taken across the country 1% leads in a 400 rank difference. To be raised in such a taxing, competitive environment the children these days MUST be smarter. Parents know this fact and start training their children at very young ages. Children are learning to read sooner, watching the news, using the net etc. Speaking of the net, children are also smarter these days cause of the ease with which they can access facts. All children are media savvy and surf the net whenever they need information. Going to a library (which was once considered necessary but tedious) is now just an urban legend, as the net supplies us much more information that could ever be fit in a singular library. In the end it is survival of the fittest but in our case its survival of the smartest.
