Hey folks, most of the companies and people believe that a good employee should be much dedicated and should always work at late nights. I totally disagree to this point, I usually like to work at the day time, and I think it is much productive than working late at night. I love to go to work as early as possible and give the maximum in the day time. Morning is the most productive and I believe working at night does not give the maximum potential we have. Any ideas about this matter, because this has been a real trouble for me since most of the people ask me to work at late night.

Hi Sachitra,
Working late hours is not a good sign that an employee is doing well with his/her job. We are given 8-hours to work on our target goals for the day and if we’re not able to accomplish it and it’s becoming habitual we need to evaluate what are the factors causing the delay to deliver targets and deciding to work on late hours. Extending hours or staying late in the office to accomplish a certain task is not a measure that you are efficient. You have to manage your time wisely—

Some people insist on working at night...especially in jobs that are outsourced...and that is because of the difference in timing..and not because the employers want the employees to work at night. My employees never insisted that I work at night...my last workplace was a school. But when I started work in the engineering field...overtime was the thing...but again...at my workplace overtime wasn't required unless a work wasn't completed on time...and we were paid extra for it.

I work 3rd shift So I start work late at night. Do I stay over in the morning if I am needed. Yes, I usually do. Because I know what it is like to be swamped by calls and have no one to help me answer them. So I hate to leave in the morning if it is VERY busy and leave everyone else in that crazy state. Is it appreciated..? I so not know- hopefully it is. Sometime I am just not sure.. But I get paid for it anyway. So I still benefit. :)

I hold the extrem opinon on the topic !
I think work overtime is to make a good impression on your boss and let him know that your are so different and work hard for him ,all the boss like the effient and deligent ,loyal workers and all of these will make you promoted very soon !in
private owned company ,the more you work ,the excellent you are ,but you have to make some achievment on your work !
now I feeel reluctant to admite that we r facing very fierce compitition with the many talentd showing up ,and the compicated society.....
we must learn to tolerate the pressure and burden ,and strive for wthat we are not having! till one day ,we will see the wealth belong to us !
we are better off from our efforts!

No, I don't think a good employee has to work nights. A good employee..Well, I think that depends on how efficient they are - and how eager to do their job they are. The effort that they put into it. Sometimes that means staying a little late or working a little overtime, but not working nights necessarily. It doesn't make you a bad employee because you want to work early mornings/afternoons.

You are right maezee, my point is also the same thing. I usually like to working from morning to the evening (sometimes a bit late, depends upon the work) and have some time with family. :)

Not neccessarily. There will be ocassions were you need to stay late to finish off some work if you are very busy at the time. I think a good employee has sometimes to make the sacrifice and stay a little longer for the greater good of the company. On the other side, an employee who always works late night is either not very good at organising their work or (in case of a manager) delegating, or he has far too much to do. In the second case the employee might get frustrated and leave which isn't good for the business neither.

sachitra84 get down on your knees and thank God you have a job to complain about the hours ,as my son has been looking for 11 months now. If your bosses want you to work an extra night hour do it, and thank your lucky stars you have a job to complain about. a lot of people are now unemployed and companies that used to hear them are now letting people go instead. be glad you are employed. If I were you seeing the other side of the coin I would work whenever I could.

I don't wanna be dull by working all day and all night. I don't think killing myself that way is a gauge that I am a good employee anyway. I seldom do overtime work that stays up late at night and so far I think my Boss considers me her best employee (modesty aside)! You are right morning is the most productive day. Evening is meant for sleeping so that we could rest. Let us not abuse ourselves if we want to stay healthy and productive all our life.

As far as I am concerned it really depends on what the situation is. If you are working late night at the office that normally means a few things:
1. There is no system in place that you have to be effective during normal work hours
2. Maybe there is bad management in place that doesn't know how to prioritize and therefore is not planning work in an effective manner where all the people know what it is that they are doing. There is a lack of understanding and managing which therefore leads to longer work hours
3. Procrastination is rife and you are not used to taking action when it should be taken and keep saying that it will get done later.
All the above areas amount to bad project management, bad time management, no understanding or clear direction of purpose.
There is no real reason why anyone should work late in the office unless they are trying to impress their boss, or they have not worked in the most optimum way to increase their productivity levels.

No, companies never want their employee to work till late night. Yes it is true many employees have to work till late night. Employer wants employee to complete the work within stipulated time without compromising with the quality. Sometime to complete the work employee have to give extra time and it get stretch till late night. But if you can finish the work within office hours, your boss will not ask you to wait till late night.

I believe that quality time is better than quantity. It doesn't matter how he do it, either early morning or late at night. I am aware that people have different ways and motivation on how they work. A good employee for me is someone who can submit his deadline on time.

Hello, this topic caught my attention right away and got my interest because I am one who actually works at night often times for several reasons. There are things that we also have to consider why work at night. One example is being an applications manager, updating a system needs to be performed at night when there are no users online to avoid work interruption to a larger number of workers. So for sure, those who work at night may have their own reasons too which doesn't necessarily implies that they are good or not as an employee. For me, what is important is you are able to deliver what you have to ON TIME and most importantly, COST effective.

Hi sachitra, i dont also approve of working or staying late in the office. Though there maybe times that you have to stay because there are things you have to finish and deadlines to meet but i dont think you have to do it everyday. By law, we are only required to work 8 hours a day and beyond that your employer should give you an overtime pay. You have to be requested to do so. But theres always an exception, some employees depending on their position, has a lot of responsibilities that they have to stay late in the office or even bring their work at home. According to psychologists, this is not a healthy practice and should be avoided.

I don't think that's a necessity nor is it a good indication if you are a good employee or not. Personally, I think it is based on you performance and how dedicated you are in your job. It just so happens that most people enjoy their job too much that their world practically revolves around it. I really don't think that's even healthy. We are all just human beings and our body gets tired too no matter how much we still wanted to work.
