Will you get your Child Vacinated against Swine Flu?

An ABC News/Washington Post poll showed that nearly half of parents don’t plan on having their children vaccinated for the H1N1 swine flu. More than half of those who do plan to vaccinate are encountering supply problems. The poll of 1,001 random American adults was conducted by phone November 12-15. It revealed that one third of adults are not confident in the vaccine’s safety, up from 30 percent last month, and about two thirds don’t plan to have themselves vaccinated, an increase from 62 percent. Fourteen percent of parents have had their children vaccinated, a 10-point jump from October, but 45 percent have no plans to vaccinate them, up from 39 percent last month. The lack of available vaccine has been a factor. Fifty-two percent of parents who intend to vaccinate their children have been unable to do so because of the limited supply of vaccine. Only 24 percent of parents are very confident about the vaccine’s safety. FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg sought to improve upon this by sending a letter to every physician in America pointing out that the swine flu vaccine is prepared just like the seasonal flu version and is just as safe. Despite Hamburg’s effort, concern about the swine flu vaccine is greater than it is for regular vaccines. While 10 percent of adults have concerns about the safety of all vaccines, 23 percent are only concerned specifically about the H1N1 vaccine. There are variations in acceptance of the vaccine among those with different levels of age, education, and insurance availability. Seventy-two percent of adults age 18-29 plan not to vaccinate, while 65 percent of those age 30 or older will not vaccinate. Among those with postgraduate education, 51 percent are not going to vaccinate versus 68 percent of those with less education. Of those who have health insurance, 63 percent have no plans to vaccinate, but 81 percent of those who do not have health insurance are not going to vaccinate. While 62 percent of Americans do not believe the government has exaggerated the danger of swine flu, those who do think the government blew things out of proportion are only half as likely to get vaccinated as those who don’t think so. Those who think the vaccine is safe are nine times more likely to be vaccinated, and they are five times likelier to vaccinate their children. So it is that problems persist for the government’s swine flu vaccination program. Many Americans are not even planning to be vaccinated, and are not planning to vaccinate their children. Even those who want the vaccine are finding it difficult to obtain a shot due to shortages. The government’s effort itself appears to be somewhat sickly, and it is no wonder the public lacks confidence in it. http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/usnews/health-care/2364-h1n1-swine-flu-poll-reveals-problems Do you think you will get your child vacinated against the swine flu? Do you think the vaccine is safe?

I know what u mean, seems u are damned if u do & damned if u don't. I think we are all guniea pigs when it comes to new meds in any form. Hope your daughter stays well, u to.

Apparently the normal seasonal flu shot is not effective against the H1N1 virus. I know my daughter will soon be offered the H1N1 vaccine and I am not sure. If it was the normal flu jab then I would say yes as we know all the side effects, it has been around for a few years now. But this other vaccine hasn't As much as I want to protect my daughter, and I believe prevention is better than cure, I am not happy about the thought of her being a human guinea pig. Because this is too new a vaccine to say its 100% safe

I have 16 months old twins and their pediatrician has tried to convince me to get them vaccinated against Swine Flu but I have refused because, the vaccine is too new. Have you seen the lawsuits going on against Yaz and the many other lawsuit that have happened with medications that have been on the market for years?? I don't trust this vaccine just yet so my answer is no, I will not be vaccinating my kids against the Swine Flu.

On the other hand I do think this vaccine is to new to jump on it right away. Personally I think I will wait awhile and see what happens.

While I was in Va in September, there was news about deaths caused by the swine flu VACCINE not the flu itself but the vaccine. I am not going to give my children the vaccine because I saw how it was rushed through FDA process and I am not going to trust that when there are people dying from the shot. Of course, it may effect everyone differently and some of the deaths were in pregnant women, but I would prefer more testing without using my kids as the guinea pigs.

No we haven't gotten the swine flu shot. I'm just worried about the vaccine it's self. If you think about it this is something that constantly mutates and has NO track record yet. But they made a vaccine for it in under a year and yet we don't have a vaccine yet for Diabetes, MS, Cancer, and many other things we for our kids and our own health. How do they know it will work? We did get the regular flu shot and so far so good no problems. And my kids are told to wash their hands as soon as they get home from school as well.

It really is a lot to think about. I have been tossing this idea around in my head for weeks. I'm still not totally sure whether to get the kids vaccinated or not. Have you gotten your's vaccinated?

No, not yet, I am not sure if I will or not. Right now my area is completely out of the vaccine. I am taking a more wait and see approach. I think the vaccine is pretty new and that worries me. I still am not sure about the whole vaccine yet.

They are giving this vaccine out in the UK. Firstly they have targeted those with underlying health conditions and pregnant women, now they want to vaccinate children up to 5yrs old. My child will be eligible for the vaccine, but I am very unsure whether or not I should let her have it. This vaccine is extremely new, so therefore we do NOT really know the side effects well enough, so our children will basically become medical guinea pigs. Secondly there have been reported case of Tamiflu becoming Non-effective against swine flu. If this is the case what is to say this vaccine will be fully effective against the illness. Thats my against argument. My for argument is that swine flu can and is deadly. It has killed many already. Mostly those with underlying illnesses, those that are pregnant and very young children. This is why the UK government are getting these people vaccinated first. The vaccine has been around for a few months, many people have had the vaccine WITHOUT any serious side effects. Its been tested and medically classed as safe. The vaccine should hopefully prevent my child from developing the swine flu illness so potentially could save her life. I really am 50/50 as to what to do. I will need to do a lot more reading on the subject before I decide to give my child this vaccine. The governments word is not enough for me.

I am saving money for the vaccine because it is not free here in our country. I have to because I don't want anything to happen to my son I believe in the saying that an Ounce of prevention is better than cure. He is still a toddler I don't want anything to happen to him.

I haven't yet and i don't know I will. My kids school sent us some package about getting them vaccinated for H1N1 there for something like $40.00. My dad was telling me stuff about mercury and children becoming autistic after being vaccinated. That certainly doesn't feel very safe. My younger child was misdiagnosed by a doctor as being autistic just because for years she would not speak to anyone but me. I don't want my girls to have it for real. The swine flu is not a big deal where I live though and we rarely ever get sick with anything.

I have 6 children two of which have health problems,so if they were to get swine flu they may never recover from it.I shall be getting my children injected as i think prevention is easy and there is sometimes no cure for swine flu in some people. If i get offered it i will also have the injection to prevent it as i have to stay well for my children. The way i also look at is there are side effects with everything so what do you do.I will let all my family have it.

I think it is smart to get the vaccine if your children have health problems.

I believe that vaccination is necessary for those who were infected of that deadly Flu. Their government should decide to cure all infected humans. It maybe difficult for them but it has to. Anyway, there are some medicine that can cure that flu without vaccinating their kids. But it's too expensive.

Proud to be an American, but I think our goverment is full of it. I was raise in the city and county. City in the school months and in the country with my grand parents in the summer months. They were old school, I learned not to run to the docter every time I had a pain. While in the city my mother was a clean and neat freek. In all I learned how to be clean and health smart, and I teach my family the same. I dont think I will stress the situation untill it becomes a serious eppidemic. It's just beginning, God Be With Us.

This is a very difficult decision to make as a parent. There are many factors to consider and for me, one pominent cause for concern is that any side affects have not been fully explored. As a father, I would find it impossible to forgive myself if my son were to develop a medical condition... or worse. Swine flu is not a serious consideration in my area at this time. It was, and perhaps if it does so again I may reconsider. For the time being though, the possible risks are far too high.
