I think that this question has turned into more of a cordial greeting than anything else. When someone greets you they often say..hi..how are you doing today? But they really aren't looking for an answer or even care how you are really doing. So..I am asking and really want to know. Good morning everyone and How are you really doing?

Hi Jen Good morning , How are you today?
How true ! So many take the time to ask ,but never bother to listen or have to run. That's fine but why ask then ? Good question,I surely can't be the proper thing to do.When I take the time to ask ,I listen also. Well trying to figure out such a common way of being rude ,I have no answer except my own above.

I'm really good..thank you. It has become somewhat of just a greeting. I can't tell you the times that people have said that to me and I just wanted to say...you really want to know? well...here it is..LOL Thank you so much for the response and take care.

Exactly! It has become yet another greetings and people are so busy today that they do not even have time to stop by and listen to what the other person has to say! Sometimes, I out if habit try to explain things about how was I been but only to be ignored. I, myself, make sure to listen. My job demands this and in the process I think I have grown more empatheic.

I don't think that they even realize sometimes that they have asked you how you are. I think it has just become more habit than anything else. I don't think of it all the time but in my tougher times I have thought..they don't really want to hear my response and if they did..what would they really think? If I greet someone like that..I always take a moment to see if they start to respond before going on.

I know you do. It feels good when you have a good listener. Its OK if you can't hear the world out bit atleast a few words wont kill us! Time cannot be a deterrant to empathy and a good listening heart, ca it?

Hi Jen. I'd have to say that, basically, I'm doing good. VERY basically! LOL
I'm in agony from cooking the Turkey Day feast which we celebrated on Wednesday because of my son's working last night until 7:00 this morning. He had security detail at Walmart for the start of the Black Friday shopping deals. He didn't need to be gorging himself with turkey right before working! So, I cooked the big meal on Wednesday. The pain level on the second day after strenuous activity is usually the worst and it's really holding true! My muscles are SCREAMING at me today! Fibromyalgia is bad enough on good days but....
Also, STILL waiting for the big bucks from my over-seven-year-long battle with Social Security Disability. I was approved for it waaaaaaaaaaay back in August and here it is, almost December, and still no big check. It defies words.
Also, having to pack away all of my gardening supplies until next Spring kinda brings me down every Fall. Gardening is my passion so having to wait six months before digging in the dirt again seems sooooooo long! But, at least I can start pulling out the Christmas decorations now to keep me occupied.
Do you think I should say all of this to the next person to ask me this question? LOL I'd love to see that "I wish I had never asked" look on their face!
So, Jen, how are YOU doing?

I'm doing really well since I am having my long weekend. Kind of great refresher.
I am a little aggravated because I got a letter in the mail Wednesday wanting me to verify what amount of money from the social security back pay I had spent on my daughter. Like I hadn't spent double that in the past for her care! i have all my receipts and such but it just pains me that they have the gall to ask proof of me spending money that is really meant to pay me back for what her father hasn't paid in the past! Wheew..there..that's better..LOL. I would like to see the look on their face when we let it all hang out too...hehe..bet they would think twice about just saying it to everyone they ran across.

Hidee hoe! I am on my way out. To sleep that is. It is about 5:30a. I have been getting along better with my granddaughter. She told me she was pregnant a couple of days ago and I am trying to be cordial. She is going to be 18 in another 24 days. Her mom had a dream it would happen when she was sixteen so I guess we lucked out alittle. Hey, for winter I am doing okay. On the vurge of a break at any moment is about the norm for the dark months. So, how is you my friend?

I'm good. Getting a few days off actually does alot for the mood. I'm glad you are getting along better with your granddaughter. I guess a new baby really brings a whole other chapter to your world right now. Just remember that it will also be a life changing event for your granddaughter too. Hopefully in a good way. Stay strong..the dark months only last a little while even though they seem to go on forever.

I agree, Jen, that the question has become more habit than actual interest in one's well-being, although when I ask someone I know well, I sincerely DO want to know how they are doing.
Just as with the question, the standard response is "fine, thank you. and how are you?"
How am I really doing? Pretty well, thank you. Thanksgiving was wonderful and I enjoyed waking up this morning to our first real snowfall of the season :))
Are you doing okay? And yes, I'd really like to know :))

I can't complain a bit about how I am. I have a few days off, eat like a pig for Thanksgiving, and am going to put a little time this weekend into some things that I love. I am glad to hear you are well and woke up to a beautiful snowfall. Thanks for responding.

Today I'm doing really well. It's Saturday so I don't have to go to work but I got up early and got some routine chores done so the rest of the day is pretty much free to do as I please. I'm also feeling better today - I've had a bad cold and then caught a stomach bug so the past couple of weeks I've felt pretty bad and I really hate being unwell. Fingers crossed that seems to be gone now! So a good start to the weekend for me - how about you? How are you doing today?

I'm doing well. I have been fighting a nasty cold for a week. I finally went to the doctor a couple of days ago and he said it was sinusitis and bronchitis. I was really sick. He give me a bunch of medicine and I'm almost back to my old self. I hardly ever get sick but when I do..it's usually really bad.I'm glad you are feeling better. Take care and thanks for the response.

Good morning Jen! It feels weird to say that because it’s ten past eight p.m. here! (LOL) So many of us say ‘How are you doing?” but do not really care to know in fact I’m sure that many ask the question and secretly hope they don’t receive an answer!
I feel sad today because my vet has informed me that we will have to make a decision in regards to putting my sick 13 year old cat to sleep. I knew this was coming but it is still tough!

I hate to hear that about your cat. It's so hard to let a pet go. Especially one that has become a longtime part of the family. I'll be thinking about you because I know your decision will not be an easy one. Take care my friend.

Hi Jen, and how are you doing today. Me, I'm pretty tired, but other than that I think I am doing very well today. I was up very early this morning and I spent the majority of the morning fighting the crowds at WalMart, but it gave me the ability to be all the way done with my Christmas shopping with four weeks to spare. That is a first for me and it is something that I am very proud of. It was great to go this evening to the store to buy something that we legitimately needed and not have to waste time looking for Christmas presents.

You're bang on. It has become more of a ritual. It would be infinitely better if we followed it up with a counter offer. Is there anything I can do to help. To be honest, I am struggling at the moment to raise my income level.

Unless I really have time to listen to an answer, I usually just say Hi, good morning, or something like that. I think one of the hardest things ever is to raisse an income level right now. I hope you are able to do it. Thanks for responding.

I think this is the starting point of a formal talk when we meet to the people or now a days it is very famous in youngster who used to say this.there are lots of greeting sentences which has no specific meaning but when speak out leave some good remark to the others...

Haha, "how are you doing" is usually a rhetorical question. But I always choose to answer with something completely random & strange, like "I'm doing great, just murdered a few people, y'know the usual ;)
haha but right now I am doing lovely because I just found this site, and I already like it ALOT.
Haha Facebook watch out!

LOL! How true. Like you say "Do you really want to know?". Today has been somewhat of a stressful day. The cost of living has increased substantially the last few months yet the rate of pay has stayed the same for the past year. It's tough times but we are thankful that we are able to pay all our bills :). In all honesty, I think people don't listen because people complain about their lives. LOL. Like me. Other than that all is good :) How are you?

I'm doing pretty well. I am facing some of the things that you have mentioned as far as the cost of living rising and pay staying the same. They also just made a little change or two to my medical benefits at work that's going to cost me a few extra dollars. I think your right about people. We'll use this discussion to get that how are you doing answer out of our systems..lol. Thanks for sharing.

It's true. When you ask "how are you doing" to someone, usually people don't really mean that they want to know how was your day, it's just a greeting. This kind of greetings exist in all languages, can't be helped, but they always sound like that because it's polite. It's better to say hi in a nice way than to say it in a bad manner.

I agree with poilitness and manners but I also think that this form of greeting can actually be seen as a insult by someone that is actually not doing so well. They are forced to put on their polite demaenor and say Fine thank you and you? When actually they don't mean it at all. Your right that it has just become a matter of politeness to ask.
