Basic PC Security

A lot of people here I see don't even have the very basic applications installed on their PC to protect them from common online threats. You wouldn't go to bed leaving your front door open or leave your car unlocked on the street. Why should it be different for your computer? I've spent 5 minutes writing you all a very brief guide on basic PC security; I hope some find it useful.
There are 3 types of application I recommend everyone have installed on their computer. These are:
- Anti-virus
- Anti-Spyware
- Firewall
Viruses and spyware will often do things to your PC that you don't want happening and most do this without your approval. They can perform tasks as harmless as changing your wallpaper and displaying a random popup, to deleting personal files and crippling essential files needed to run your computer. Without these 3 types of application above, you're PC is at much greater risk than is necessary.
Get yourself a good, free anti-virus application. I recommend Avira Anti-virus. It was voted one of the best anti-virus in 2009 on a popular PC review website beating even subscription based anti-virus applications. This will keep your PC safe from viruses, Trojans and other similar harm.
Install a firewall. This is a piece of software that acts as a gate keeper between your PC and the Internet. If something or someone wants to access your PC, the firewall will popup asking for your response. I recommend COMODO firewall, although the default Windows firewall will do for most users.
Install an independent spyware scanner! I recommend Malwarebytes. Once installed, run it, update it then run a full system scan. Anything it finds, delete. For dangerous websites and popup protection, I recommend installing Spyware Blaster. When clicking "Enable All Protection", this application will program common Internet browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer with knowledge of harmful websites and known popups and add these to the blocked list. It doesn't need to remain open to be working but update it every week and click "Enable All Protection" to give your browser intelligence on harmful websites.
* All applications mentioned here are free to use. Just use a search engine like Google to find each piece of software, it's very easy!
Things to remember:
Update these applications often - There are new threats every day so if you want to remain as safe as you can, update!
Don't install two anti-virus or firewalls - If you have two anti-virus applications installed or two firewalls installed, these will conflict causing more harm than good. You only need one! Since the anti-spyware applications I mentioned above do not run all the time, you can safely install more than one without any problem.
Your PC isn’t invincible - Having these applications installed is sufficient for a typical home computer and will greatly improve your PC security if you update them often. You aren’t invincible though but you’ve definitely taken the correct steps!

Seems you are a champ in this field of security.
I think you have a point here in suggestion. But let me tell you some easy steps I followed and it's been three years, my pc is going smoothly.
1.For firewall , i am using windows firewall.
2.I am using ESET NOD 32 version 4 antivirus and spyware.
How's that?

I would say that's pretty good. I never trust an anti-virus with handling spyware though. Yes, some anti-virus can detect spyware but the amount of spyware it can detect is limited. It's much better if spyware is handled by a dedicated program. Very likely more spyware will be detected and much more updates will be available.
I've heard of NOD but can't say how good it is. I think it scored average in the anti-virus review I read last year.

I would agree with you about anti-spyware and antivirus should be separate software. I been using Antiver ( for virus detection) and Spybot (for spyware detection) ever since because these two combination are the best protection software out there against any threat and all of them are free to use. And even though I don't really care if this thing work because I don't have confidence with it but anyhow I just use the Windows firewall. I don't use other kind of firewall software cuz i'm not that kind of paranoid with regards to pc security with those basic 3 software I feel safe already.

ok bro everything is up-to-date in your article but i have a few modifications to make
1- You use all free softwares.i beg to say that when it comes to security i dont trust the word "free". Being a geek myself, i know the capability of free softwares. Free anti-virus's engine is no match for with the commercial ones.
By the way, ive got loads of hard to find videos on my hard drive, a lot of sweet memories with my friends that ive shared, which i call photos, my most important presentations. would i risk all my stuff and depend upon something that's "free"?
Secondly, you used a free firewall named comodo firewall, as far as my experience goes, zone alarm is far ahead than comodo firewall. again, if you look into cnet reviews, you'll know what i mean.
thirdly, you used a anti spyware with a below par rating. i would have always used spybot search & destroy (free) or spy sweeper (paid).
here is my security config:-
FOR BUDGET USERS (who dont have much to lose)
NOD32 Antivirus (budget anti virus, great features, easy to use)
SpyBot Search & Destroy
Zone alarm personal firewall
FOR SECURITY FREAKS
Norton Antivirus 2010/ Panda Titanium Edition
Spy Sweeper
Zone Alarm Pro
FOR SERVERS
Norton 360
Zone Alarm Pro

Hey, thanks for your input,
I want to make clear that the applications I talked about were suggestions and people are free to use whatever applications they wish. I disagree a lot when you say free applications are no match for commercial ones as I and everyone I know around me have not had any security breach with free firewall, anti spyware and anti virus in many years of use. I am not saying we have not had alerts, we have had plenty but this is good because it means threats were stopped before damage is potentially caused.
I used Spybot for 3 years so I have a lot of experience with it but honestly, Malwarebytes detect more threats. People are free to use what they want but my recommendations are VERY SUITABLE for home users. Unlike with real security for your home/car where generally the more money you spend, the better security you have, it is not the same for security software. If you disagree, this is fine but these applications have kept me safe for years and I access lots of dodgy sites and files on a weekly basis. If people like buying commercial software because they feel good then go for it but it's not needed and you can still be attacked...
Listen very carefully to this part... if you have extremely important files you want kept safe then using ANY anti virus (free or commercial) and that's it, thinking you are 100% safe is wrong and dumb. No software can protect you indefinitely, you need to back up friend.... backup those files on discs, USB drives etc and store a backup of the backup in another location offsite (incase of fire, flood, theft etc)

Yes, it will increase knowledge about PC security if many people read it. Does Symantec Security handle spyware too?
