Do you like your name? If given the chance, would you change it?

It is true that we have no choice as to what names our parents gave us. After all, we could not even talk when we were born . Still, many parents are quite creative in making up names for their children. Some pick out the first thing that comes to mind. Some don't bother to think of a creative one and just pick out what they think looks nice or unique. So, do you like your name? As for me, "Joy" is fine but there are a million "Joy"s in the Philippines that everyone I know are related to at least one "Joy". If given a chance, would you change your name? Well, definitely yes. I'd choose something exciting or at least cute such as Alexandria or Lady Jasmine or whatever . Still, I would not go as far as spend money just to have my name changed into something else.

Hi Joy. Yes,I do agree that their is a lot of "Joy" in the Philippines. And I have a encountered a lot of classmates having a "joy" in their names. But anyway, if given the chance to change it I will not do so since I like my name although not the second name... It's actually Phoebe Gail. My Mom liked the actress of whose name is Phoebe so she wanted that one and my father added the Gail because for him it sounded good. Oh well, its quite cute really. And like you I don't want to spend money just to change my name even if I wanted to.

How true . Gail sounds like a nice name to me - making me think that there are things we don't like about ourselves that other people like .

My name is Erica. My middle name is Rae and as a child I did not like it. I would get made fun of being told it was a boys name but as I got older, I grew to love it. It is not spelled like a boys name....it is actually the female version. I think it has a classy sound to it and I love that it's different. I think at one point in all of our lives there is something that we would love to change. The truth is, I believe that the sooner we come to terms with everyone is different and accept ourselves for truly who we are, the better we feel. Life is so much more stress free. And that goes for everything including names.

Hi, joy, a interesting topic!I don't know if I like my name or not. What I know is there is only 4 people have the same name with mine, incl. me (I'm in China.) Yes, it's true! So...I always avoid to tell others my true name (more than fifty percent Chinese don't know my surname.) And it's really hard to explain it. So I named myself another surname as per my given name - the same pronunciation but different character. Or I also get another name as per my mother's surname. But I don't want to change my name.

I hate my name.. hehehe. It's too common and old and it reads like a bold star or something. hahaha. My first name is Criselda. ( okay you can stop laughing now. lol).. I have no idea why my parents gave me that name. I mean, it's not part of their names combined, it's not the fad back when I was born. I guess they just thought that it was a good name. I love my nickname though, it's unique and it says a lot about me. My nickname is ING.

Your name does not sound like a bold star at all . Where did ING come from?
• Philippines

Hehehehe. My nickname is Kring Kring ( another bold star. hahaha. ).. as I grew older I shortened it to just ING. And I liked it the way it is now.

I was lucky. My parents thought that I was going to be a boy, so they picked up a pretty boring name. As I ended up being a girl, they had to think it over again, and fortunately they chose a nice name I don`t think I would change, as I like my name.

Im "Donna Marie" but Ive always had "Donna Marie" or just "Donna". It is usually my family who use the full version and friends who use "Donna". I do not mind because I have gotten used to this. If I had to choose I would say I do prefer "Donna Marie" because it makes me sound double barrelled lol.

I think my name is ok . It cann't not to be denied that some names are too common or too "ugly" . However i'm satisfied with my name so far . Early this year i gave a birth to a lovely boy . We actually guessed out that it was a boy therefore before he was born we already decided a name for him. Nowadays there are many software which will help to give a name . We all try our best to find a name and a right name for our kids.

Hai Joy..right you say, for me the name of a parent who has given us a pride, althought the name is not cool. I think parents have the intention of our name. and i better use the money for other purposes than we spent to change our name.

I don't like to change my name if I get a chance. My name is my identitiy and I have been knownf or a long time by this name. I also believe that it is the right of the parents to select the name of the kid they give birth to. I don't want to interfere in their right. I am happy about my name. It is the name of a beautiful flower selected by my uncle and my parents liked it.

My name is unique I have not heard a single person in my name. it feels bad when people find it difficult to pronounce my name. my name is Kate Chou. i like it because it is unusual. i dislike it because it is a pain to write Kate Chou on all of my papers and when people call my name they either can't pronounce it or take forever to say it. my nickname is Adam. i like change it, but i can't.
@joyadalia (1408)
• Philippines
25 Jan 10
Well, Adam is so different from Kate Chou but it is good that you have a nickname that you like. Yes, the process of changing one's name can be long and costly - especially when we are past the school years and have made a so-called "name for ourselves" in our profession. I could not imagine the look of my former classmate's faces when they call out my name and I'd have to explain that I am no longer using it .

Yup, Melissa is pretty common but if it has a special significance such as yours, then it is a good name.
