You are going to be "out of commission". What do you do?

Say you are going to be going in for surgery that will force you to be "laid up" for a while. Or you are going to be taking care of someone ill and you know you won't be going much of anywhere while you are taking care of them. What preparations do you make to keep yourself occupied? I remember when my sister had her gallbladder removed ten years ago. We went to the local Blockbuster, and she rented eight movies. So while she recovered, she watched movies to take up the time. I on the other hand always get a lot of books when I know I will be taken out of commission for a long while. What do you guys do to pass the time when you know you will be pretty much stationary for any significant amount of time?

Hi AmbiePam! Just like you I also love reading a lot. To make my self occupied I would read a lo of Paulo Coelho and Nicholas Parks novels. I also love to cook but don't have time to do it because of work so I would buy a new recipe book and learn to cook something new. I would also answer and post a lot of discussions in mylot. :)

Books and movies are the best. Comedies are my choice, because when at home and in the bed, everyone can be depressed. Other than this, maybe laptop to be able to read on Internet or watch the movies.

Hi Amber! I guess I would pretty much do what you're doing! I would have plenty of books, since I am not really that into movies and if I was I would just find them on tv! I would have plenty of food on hand that I like! I would just make sure that whatever else I needed would be in the house ahead of time! I know that in your case you have your Mom and Dad that can go out shopping for you so in case you run out of stuff they will be there to help you out! I would have to really prepare because I would have to count on friends and that would really be a big problem! When I was in the hospital for an emergency illness not one of my friends, except my boyfriend came to visit! So I have already learned my lesson! Since none of them have cars, I really would need to prepare!

I usually sleep as much as possible. I do watch television, some. I like books and magazines and I like hand work. If possible I use the laptop.

I have never been "laid up". Since I am a very active person, I would find it very difficult. If I was able to use my laptop I would be able to continue with my writing and design work. If I could sit up I would spend some time doing 1000 piece Thomas Kinkade jigsaws, but if I was confined to bed, space might be a problem with that one. I would do some cryptic crosswords. I would read. I would watch a few movies. I would find it VERY difficult and might not be my usual happy self!

I have many things that I like to do to keep myself occupied. Watching new movies, reading good books, my craftwork and graphic art are all things I like to do when I can't do anything else. But, people have almost had to sit on me to get me to rest when I was supposed to. I've come home from the hospital after major surgery and got right to work the same day (I did typesetting and proofreading from home) or did whatever needed to be done. I sat myself down on the kitchen floor once after being cut open from hip to hip and washed the floor, scooting around on my behind as needed. LOL I just don't like being confined. I won't over-do it but I just don't like lying around in bed for long periods of time. I was in the hospital recouperating for 16 days once a LONG time ago. I was 16 and had surgery to both heels. The ONLY thing that kept me sane at that time was the fact that I was in a ward with 5 other gals around my age. We were so bad! We had a blast, though. The nurses weren't too happy about our antics but we didn't care. I arranged a "parade" of sorts at one point because we were all so bored. Those who could walk helped those who couldn't and we marched all over the hospital (well, that floor, anyway) and sang our hearts out. We would have done more but they (the nurses) got a bit perturbed and said we had to go back to our room. Party poopers! Yeah, it's still hard to keep me down.

I've never really had anything to keep me down for a while. I did have gallbladder removed about 4years ago but had a laparoscopy so I only stayed in Hospital for one.day.But then I returned to work too early so had to take sometime off.I think that I watched TV and read a lot. I am an avid reader of all kinds of books. I do not remember doing anything else apart from that.Oh, church sisters and friends came and brought me food as all my children were living off the Island at the time. If I knew that something was going to lay me up then I would definitely want TO have books to read.

I prefer doing the crossword, read, take a nap, munch something, compose poems, phone up people and chat away. This normally takes up my free time

Personally, that is one reason I am glad I have a laptop for those just in case moments or days to where I feel too bad, as my office and Computer is down stairs and my bedroom is upstairs. A lot of times though when I feel the worst if I know in advance I can prepare with extra books, or rent a couple of movies, but when it is unexpected I just do what I can do when my husband is at work and hope for the Best from there.

Since I have cable and internet, I think those two would keep me pretty busy in itself. If I got hard up for anything else to do, I have tons of books that I haven't ever read that I would pick up and read. And then it would a very good time to pick up the Bible and read it from front to back.

That's the best time to catch up on movies you haven't seen yet. It passes alot of time away and it's fun to do. And reading books too, like you mentioned. I also do crossword puzzles, or catch up on magazines I haven't had a chance to see. A laptop helps if you want to stay connected and do some online work or fun, or do the old fashion way of writing letters (real writing, haha) to people you haven't talked to in a while, and what a surprise that will be! Keep a journal on your escapades. That's about all I can think of for the moment.

I could keep writing with my laptop in my bed and my books would be on my bedside table as well as all the DVDs I have not seen yet. In fact if it wasn’t for the fact that being laid up for a while may mean being in a bit of a pain, it would be quite a treat to stay in bed all day doing all my favourite things from my bed and staying right away from household chores!

For times like that I borrow a pile of books from the library. I read a lot anyway. If you have a computer, but can't get out to the library, there are some terrific website that have free books online for reading. One that I've used before is: www.pagebypagebooks.com It's a great site and totally free to use. There are, of course, no current best sellers there, but you'd be hard pressed NOT to find something there.

Who needs bestsellers? I don't usually end up reading them anyway. Maybe when they find their way into the bargain bin. lol
