hie, what do you do with left over food. when my family and i have eaten, and there is still little left over, i continue to eat and finish it off. this is not a good idea as i am already full. the other option , i just throw away as too little to keep like a small quarter bowl. when there are more left over food, i keep in the fridge and its still in the fridge till the 3rd day, i have to throw it out as it seems its not fresh anymore. is it so? or i can still heat it up and eat it. if i keep in the freezer, how long can i keep them. my friends say can even keep left over cakes and cooked food in the freezer for up to a year. need help in this area.

I have a dog, that is why left over foods are not a problem to me... I can always give it to her... She is a big breed dog and she eats a lot. I hate throwing foods too... There are many people who doesn't have food to eat... And it is a real bad idea to just waste them... I would definitely feel guilty... When there are left over foods and it is too heavy for my dog too, I keep it in my refrigerator too and make sure that I heat it up the following day... And consume them all, or cook and mix them to make a new viand or dish...

Well that is good gracefuldove! Some people doesn't have food to eat and it is our one way also of thanking for the grace of God! For blessing us always. Your family will not even notice that you are doing some recycling on left over food... Just cook it right and nice

I always make sure to cook just right for the two of us. however, when there's a little leftover, i don't throw them away. i keep them inside our refrigerator and reheat them for breakfast the nex day. usually, i reheat the rice and add garlic, egg and some seasonings to make it tastier.. then i just fry chinese luncheon meat or hotdogs to pair with fried rice... :) you know, i don't like throwing away food because it's a blessing from God..

I don't eat meat just vegetables and fish, I cook my own meals since my mother eats meat and stuff like that, so I only cook for myself unless I have any guests, when I cook for myself I make simple meals, it's usually raw ingredients with condiments, for example I boil water with condiments I take my ingredients I put them in there, and then I take with ever I want to eat right from the pot into my plate, so I don't waste no food since I put ingredients I want to eat, and if I'm still hungry I put more, it's simple, or if I want to eat sushi, I cook 1-2 hands of rice I take the tuna meat and slice 2 or 3 bits, I moist it in soy souse a bit, I put my wasabe and it's ready to be eaten, if I want more I make one more, it's simple :), or even when I cook soup, I cook one plate for myself, and I know I will eat it all. I never had problems having left overs, my mother and my friends say I'm eating weird stuff, and raw fish, but it's much healthier and convenient than eating cooked meat and such.

you are so fortunate as you cook for yourself. you cook what you want to eat and also the quatity. also you decide to cook when you want to eat your meals. i cook for my family and its the time when everyone is available to dine and chit chat. its hard to gauge their appetities and now i draw a menu each week for their dinner and they tick besides it whether they be back for dinner or working late or dine out with friends. so i find this arrangement rather fun and easy. at times when majority are out, i dont have to cook and i eat out too.

Hi graceful, I don’t have any experience in keeping the food in freezer. Normally I prepare sufficient food for my family and I can calculate it accurately as I am preparing the food everyday. But sometimes it happens to leave some food extra and I will keep the same in fridge and use the same in next day. Throwing food is not a good idea until it is not good for eat or spoiled. Some people are giving the extra food to animals. Some are giving the same to poor but all of us are not able to do the same. Keeping the food in freezer that also for one year is so long so there may be any health hazards with that so I won’t prefer it. If there is left over food then use the same next day or prepare a different variety with that food, it can provide different taste so everybody will enjoy it.

If there is lots of food left we usually put it in the fridge so that we can eat it the next day. If there is only a bit food left we give it to our pets. Our rabbits love to eat the rest of the salad and out dog eats the meat, the pasta, the rice, the potatos etc. He is not fussy and he eats almost everything. If the food is very spicy we don't give it to him and in those cases we throw the food away if we can't save it for the next day.

hie porcospino, thanks for the interesting response. you have rabbits and dogs to help your family in the left over meals. thats good as nothing is wasted unless spicy food. years ago in our village, we hang a pail outside out kitchen window and put the leftovers there. the pig rearers come on threir rounds to collect for their animals and poultries. no more such thing nowadays. this is in a way, the price of modernisation.

I think it depends on the food on how long can you keep it in the fridge. In our case, when we get leftover, we usually keep it in the fridge, and try to eat it the next day so it won't stay in the fridge for so long. As you said, if it has been in there for a number of days, you'll doubt the freshness of the food, and you think if you can still eat it or not, but of course you have to stay on the safe side so you'll just throw it away which is really bad.. So we try to eat it the next day, or it won't be eaten at all.

That's true. It's really unavoidable, and it is really better to eat it the next day.

I dont eat it on the same day. I put it in the fridge and use it up the next week. Sometimes I mix it up with the same type of food that I cook during that week. It is not healthy to go on eating. So try this it might help.

In my house we also refrigerate our left-overs. Most of the time we end up throwing them out because no one wants them, but I think that's a shameful waste of food, especially considering the cost of groceries and how much of your family budget you spend at the grocery story. However, I don't think three days is too long for left-overs. I think they might last a bit longer than that.

hie, i learn alot from all the responses. we cant help and there will be food left overs. what we do with the left overs in our creative ways help. some fried the left over rice. some make soup out of vegetables. great ideas. i think 3 days is reaching the maximum days of storing in the fridge. i try nowadays to cook just enough food to avoid wastage and to avoid putting on unnecessary weight.new resolution as a mylotter homemaker and minister of home affairs for year 2010.

I pack it up and put it in the refrigerator. What is the point of stuffing yourself if you are already full? I don't like to eat a big lunch while I'm at work, so leftovers work for me. I have never been wasteful when it comes to eating leftovers, I guess that is how I was raised. I will keep food and eat it until it is gone...in other words, if it doesn't smell bad, change color, or grow hair, I will still eat it. We are much too wasteful these days, I believe.

thanks mslena for your response. you keep the left over for the next meal or so. you do not have them in the fridge for days or in the freezer for a year. i have learn to cook enough food for the family and no more wastage and headache for me. if there want some more, go for the bread in the fridge and eat the fruits.

My mom makes enough meals for us. If there are left overs, we would refrigerate it and heat it up again on dinner or for the next 2 days the most. I don't think left over cakes and cooked food in the freezer that's kept for a year would be healthy or be as fresh as it was.

i agree with you that its not wise to keep leftover food like cakes in the fridge for a year. rightly put everything has a self life and this means a no no to such food being stored in the fridge. the motto is to eat as fresh the food you cook. cheerio.

wow a year? no way, i won't trust that kind of food then, I know everything has its own expiration date and freezing them will just make them taste nasty, I mean if you freeze a cake and want to eat it again after a couple of months, you still have to unfreeze it right? And when you do, it will become wet and yuck, no won't like eating a wet cake, eew and who knows it might kill you. But anyway, when we have left over food, we keep them in the fridge till the next day and try to eat them or just give them to dogs, we don;t really make a lot of food, we always estimate the food we eat so that we won't be leaving food to go to waste, we've been practicing this so its not a problem anymore, but there are those times like special occasions that it does happen and we just keep them in the fridge and heat them up and eat them, but we never really eat those food that has been in the fridge for longer than 4 days.

i think what you wrote makes alot of sense. what is the point of putting in the fridge for 1 year. and there is the expiry date too. i decide to cook enough food for the family. also when dining out, i wont pack leftover home as most time nobody is eating. it goes to the garbage.
9 Mar 10
I suppose it depends what the leftovers consist of. for the most part I always cook enough for leftovers anyway. It's much easier to reheat when the kids eat lunch the next day. if we have leftover vegetables than I usually make a soup out of it and eat it the following day. Any leftover pasta bits are placed in a container in the fridge and we eat them cold with tuna and salad. I don't tend to freeze leftovers, there are just too many hungry people in our house, so it always gets eaten pretty quickly. We also have a dog and a cat who get any leftover meat.

hie beautyfactor, your leftovers are meant for the next day. you prepare the extras that way for next day lunch. its a good idea. i think those with kids and growing family, the dinner leftovers are for lunch when the children come back from school. there is no need to rush and cook, just reheat and eat. wow, thats a hearty meals for the children. cheerio.
